Mod post DO NOT MOVE OR PICK UP YOUR MILLIPEDE IF IT IS MOLTING, INJURED, OR DYING. IF YOU POST A PIC OR VID JUST LEAVE THEM WHERE THEY ARE.

THIS STRESSES THEM OUT AND HINDERS THEIR MOLTING OR HEALING PROCESS.

75 gallon of happy millipedes! They’re so happy that it turned into a breeding colony 😭 I’ve got Narceus americanus, smokey oaks, bumblebees, ivories, garden flatbacks and assorted bioactive crew. No ISOPODS!! 🚫

Advice What varieties like terrarium-like conditions? We’d like to have a bioactive display enclosure with plants.

We’re researching if keeping a giant millepede is the best choice for us. We have gotten into building pretty terrariums with our kids, which led to springtails, which led to isopods, which led us to this point. We want to create an enclosure that has some visual interest and aesthetics as it’ll go in our living room.

Are there varieties that would do better in a bioactive vivarium set up? Or can anyone link their favorite “expert” site? There’s SO much out there and some is conflicting.

Thanks!

Question Adding mix ins to my substrate?

Upvotes

I recently purchased 2 giant african millipedes, and also bought the substrate from the breeder. It's a mix of Organic Mushroom compost, hardwood pellets, worm castings, and bamboo leaf litter.

As I was adding it into their 30 gallon, I was also mixing in oak leaves and white wood rot but, I'm not sure I put enough as it's 10 inches of soil. A little under half the 30 gallon full. I recently bought more rotted hardwood and I'm curious whether I should just put it on top or mix it in with my substrate I really don't wanna dig the millipedes up I just want to make sure they have lots of good food. They are pretty surface active but do still bury for days at a time.

Found him while raking up some leaf litter in central Alabama. His legs are red. Does anyone know what kind of millipede this is? I didn’t realize how cute their faces are. 🥹

Question Is this normal or just the specie?

Lila, as usual, went for a walk around the terrarium and I took a picture of her. When I saw the photo, I realized she had those strange patterns, and I'm worried that it could be something negative or that it could just be her interior. (I still researching lilas specie)

Question Terrarium roofing

I got a roof for my aquarium-turned-terrarium and its been doing well for holding in moisture but recently it cracked (i'm guessing because of temp differences from the heat emulator thing and my bedroom), are there any other roofs that'd work besides glass but still hold the humidity my millipede will need? i don't want to risk glass again because even if it looks like a clean break there could be micro pieces in the substrate now. could i get recommendations? i currently have a 30x12x12

New owner! Purchased these two ivory millipedes together and one of them doesn’t look so good 😞 Tried to move him around a little bit and didn’t notice any movement. Not sure how this could’ve happened since my other one seems fine. PS I hydrated their moss right after I took this photo.

Question questions about shipping process

i ordered a yellow smokey oak millipede and a california tylobolus millipede from bugsincyberspace on monday 4/1/25 and then it shipped 4/2/25 and it delivered on friday 4/4/25. the tylobolus one was decently well. it was slightly stressed from the shipping process, and when i put it in a smaller tank for them to chill out from the stressful shipping process it burrowed pretty well into the dirt, slow at first, but succeeded in burrowing. the smokey oak millipede has been pretty limp but still alive and walks pretty slowly and only burrows a little bit under the dirt that its exoskeleton is showing if you look at the top of the dirt. the smokey oak millipede has still been pretty limp and slow but is still alive i think. how long does it take for a smokey oak millipede to recover from the stressful shipping process? is there a chance it would die soon or no? im trying to do the best i can for it to feel more calmer and lessed stressed. is there anything else i can do or should i leave it be and monitor it for the next 5 days or so hopefully?

Question How many bumblebee millipedes would fit in here?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I'm planning on getting both bumblebee and thai rainbows this year (in separate enclosures) and currently looking for enclosures that are both spacious while also not being too big. I don't just want to get one though so I'm wondering how many I can fit inside a single enclosure. If you need clarification please let me know.

I had an male ivory and a female chocolate in this terrarium, but it also had some plants from the garden store, so I don't know where these little fellows came from. Can anyone identify them? They sure have been devouring my fancy expensive decorative wood!

From left to right:

Enclosure this month-->Enclosure last month-->Enclosure starting out-->Slav by their sacred leaf-->Pete on a piece of apple.

Changes in Enclosure:

Gorbechav (smaller pede) passed away, having what seemed like a bad molt, the back-most segments were incredibly scrunched up and their but was disproportionately small compared to what was normal, they ended up exposing space between two of their body plates and died next morning, they have been placed in a pill bottle.

The two vines have grown exceptionally well, having spread across the entire container and rooted in multiple places, developing a canopy of sorts.

Charlotte (last remaining spider) has once more relocated.

Added litter has depleted vigorously, including old materials added over 3 months ago.

Globular springtails have returned apparently considering I spotted one a week ago.

A new plant has sprouted on the right side of the enclosure, I think its a bulb of some kind.

The fungus and rove beetles have dissappeared.

A strange pale brown slug/worm/leech thing has shown up within the enclosure, could be a maggot of some sort, has an odd and incredibly narrow neck.

New moss growth has slowed down.

Two mushrooms have grown and then immediately wilted.

The isopods have grown but not multiplied.

Changes made to Enclosure:

A brown marmorated stink bug has been added. I have dubbed them Pete and they are fed weekly with an apple shaving/slice.

As Pete is an arboreal animal I added a decently sized and well supported stick covered in lichen (they use it frequently). This stick also acts to support the vines as well.

More litter has been added.

Two earwig nymphs stowedaway on a piece of litter. They have been named Slav and Coleslaw. Slav stays by a particular leaf almost 24/7 and I only know that they have been doing anything because droppings keep showing up under them, also they completed their final molt quite recently. Coleslaw actually moves around and explores the enclosure.

A patch of new moss including sporophytes has been added in the hopes that it will propagate enmasse across the enclosure.
