Reviews:

Variety (90)

Chu clearly designed “Wicked” to be experienced the old-fashioned way: on the biggest screen you can find, among a crowd of giddy theatergoers (inevitably singing along in some screenings). Unlike several recent tuners, which tried to hide their musical dimension from audiences, “Wicked” embraces its identity the way Elphaba does her emerald skin. Turns out such confidence makes all the difference in how they’re perceived.

The Hollywood Reporter (90)

Grande and Erivo give Stephen Schwartz’s songs — comedy numbers, introspective ballads, power anthems — effortless spontaneity. They help us buy into the intrinsic musical conceit that these characters are bursting into song to express feelings too large for spoken words, not just mouthing lyrics and trilling melodies that someone spent weeks cleaning up in a studio.

Deadline:

Chu has made a movie musical (the best since Chicago), even if it ends with its own “intermission” , that manages to stand on its own as a fully satisfying screen entertainment, and also serves as a delicious invitation to an upcoming second half I quite frankly can’t wait to see.

IndieWire (67)

Jon M. Chu’s Massive Musical Adaptation Defies Gravity (and Logic) to Spin a Tale Mostly for Established Fans. Ariana Grande is an absolute scream and Cynthia Erivo's voice is unparalleled, but expanding out the Broadway musical into two (very long) parts doesn't offer the opportunity for depth we were promised.

TheWrap (80)

The story’s playful, subversive reinterpretation of 'The Wizard of Oz' as a work of propaganda, designed to obfuscate the true story of how political dissidents and minority groups are demonized by fascist con artists who trade in theatricality instead of competence, is fully developed and still (to our collective dismay) incredibly salient.

IGN (90)

Wicked is a well-oiled machine in the hands of Jon M. Chu. This film adaptation epitomizes what modern movie musicals can and should be, embracing its source material while cleverly translating it to screen. Tear-jerking performances by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo make the movie, playing to their individual strengths to bring to life the rapport between Glinda and Elphaba, who’ll go on to become the good and wicked witches of Wizard of Oz fame. If as many people love this film as much as I did, Wicked will undoubtedly immortalize the Grande and Erivo in movie musical history.

The Guardian (80)

It’s arguable if Wicked could ever be a meaningfully persuasive prequel for the characters in The Wizard of Oz as we actually see them in the 1939 film, as this would involve cancelling their powerfully timeless, mythological aura, and instead substituting the more banal idea of human development. But this is the joke, and this is the story, and what an enjoyable spectacle it is.

BBC (3/5)

It might have been lighter on its feet if the editors had cut a subplot about magical talking animals, which doesn't add anything except several minutes of running time. And they could have cut Elphaba's sister, who is given perplexingly little to do. That way, the film could have been packed the whole musical into one fast-moving, satisfying entertainment. As it is, I have a strong suspicion that Wicked will work much better as the first part of a double bill, with Wicked Part 2 being shown after an interval. But we'll have to wait another year to know for sure.

Independent - UK (3/5)

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande showcase phenomenal vocal ability in this adaptation of the blockbuster musical, but they’re let down by a film that is aggressively overlit and shot like a TV advert.

Telegraph - UK (2/5)

Utterly exhausting and hopelessly miscast. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo don’t come close to defying gravity in this bloated, beige screen adaptation of the Wizard of Oz prequel.

Total Film (100)

A great deal of expectation and pressure had been placed on Wicked, with fans waiting decades for it to reach the screen. This makes what Chu has achieved an even greater feat, turning one of the world's most popular musicals into a cinematic phenomenon. And while Wicked is only one half of this story, it never feels incomplete. As part two will take this story to some weird, wonderful, and heartbreaking places, I cannot wait to see what he and his team accomplish. But at this rate? I don't think anything can bring them down.

Empire Magazine (80):

Chu amps up the colour and spectacle to extraordinary, almost overwhelming heights, but the real magic comes from Erivo and Grande as the frenemies at the story’s heart.

Consequence (83)

The film is effective at capturing what made the original musical so beloved, and in turn, will belong to a new generation of kids — those kids who might then envision themselves cathartically singing “Popular” or “Defying Gravity” on stage, just as Ariana Grande had as a child.

Collider (90)

The film works on an emotional level, and yet there are also well-delivered lessons about growing fascism that are tragically poignant in our American era. The set pieces are big and bold, and the dance numbers are creative and colorful. Grande is continually hilarious as the charmingly vapid Galinda, while Erivo is breathtakingly powerful as the so-called Wicked Witch. Both Grande and Erivo sound glorious through beautiful interpretations of modern musical classics like "Defying Gravity." It all coheres into one of the best silver screen adaptations of a musical in ages, and easily one of the year's best pictures.

Entertainment Weekly (75)

For now, like Denis Villeneuve’s first Dune, this Wicked manages to end on a note of “to be continued” while still feeling like a complete story. If only its imagery had a little more magic!

Screenrant (90)

Save for the tiniest of things, Wicked is a worthy screen adaptation of the musical, guaranteed to make viewers feel like they could defy gravity too.

The Times - UK (80)

Hollywood finally delivers a worthy successor to The Wizard of Oz with this musical adaptation, starring the superb Erivo as Elphaba and a startlingly good Ariana Grande as Glinda.

Vanity Fair (80)

Wicked succeeds because of some unreproducible, lightning in a bottle convergences—of director, stars, craftspeople, and high-status material. But Wicked also makes a broader case for patience and careful thought, for grand ambition honed over the course of many years. In order to defy gravity, gravity must first be understood.

iNews - UK (100)

It joyfully expands on the source material with extended musical numbers and astute childhood flashbacks in a combination that will delight committed Ozians and newcomers alike.

San Francisco Chronicle (100)

Fueled by exquisite performances from Tony winner Erivo (“The Color Purple”), as Elphaba, or the Wicked Witch of the West, and Grammy winner Grande as Glinda the Good Witch, “Wicked” is the best movie musical in years, representing a rare instance when performances, visuals and songs are of equally high quality.

Here is my review that I posted on the Broadway sub —

Just got home from the advanced screening.

Context: saw it in NYC with Idina, caught two tours through San Francisco, read the book looong before the musical was conceived.

Overall: 10/10

The good:

  • It was a candy buffet for the eyes- just beautiful. The costumes, sets, choreography.

  • The added length gave more time to deepen the bonds of their friendship and better illustrate the cruelty towards animals, adding so much emotional depth.

  • lots of little Easter eggs and homage to both the original movie and to the stage production

  • the original orchestration was preserved and elevated, rather than trying to make it something “new”. And it was gorgeous

  • was prepared to be utterly off put by Ariana - but consider me converted. She pulled it off well without coming across as a mimicry of Kristen. Yes, definitely pulled in pieces of it, but she also made it her own. However, it took me a bit to let go of the comparisons.

  • Cynthia was breathtaking. Given her drama queen antics of late, I was afraid it would ruin her role for me. But all of that is forgotten breath quickly - even her speaking voice is charismatic

  • Jonathan Bailey did a great job. I was afraid he was too old or wouldn’t be able to sing. He brought the ultimate swank and playboy energy.

  • so much comedy!

  • cameos! I won’t ruin them, I only knew of one. The theater ERUPTED at one point. (Yes, I was with my people)

  • songs where the delivery was different were still done tastefully and beautiful. I was afraid we would get some Mariah Carey trilling up and down the octaves.

The not so good

  • I don’t have much to say - there was no point where I felt thrust back into reality because something felt forced or missed

  • Michelle Yeoh really didn’t bring much, I think it could have been someone else.

  • yes, Jeff Goldblum is really not a singer.

  • you don’t get the same vocal power that we get to experience in live theater. As much as Defying Gravity was amazing - I wasn’t covered in goosebumps like I am when hearing it live and belted. Is that sound editing? Mixing? Dunno.

In summary

I found myself tearing up several times, leaning forward with mouth hanging open, and just overwhelmed with emotion. I was full crying at end, my throat completely choked up from emotion. I was utterly moved.

Jeff Godlblum is not a singer like Russel Crowe is not a singer or like Pierce Brosnan is not a singer?

9

u/yacjuman Nov 21 '24

He only talk-sings a few lines telling a story basically, worse than Russel Crowe but makes sense in context, Michelle yeoh has a similar type of song - it’s not a “sung through” musical where people are singing every sentence of the film like Les Mis.

u/CalvinbyHobbes Nov 24 '24

Jeff is a great showman. And him being a jazz pianist/vocalist really comes in handy. It’s like with Elaine stritch in company. Just because he isn’t singing, doesn’t mean it’s a bad vocal performance. I really thought he was brilliant.

u/oldtrollroad Nov 27 '24

It helps that his song is not an epic like Javert's big number. It didn't seem so much like a struggle as a choice.

I'm glad to hear this, but also a bit surprised. The movie looks really ugly in the trailers. Maybe the cinematography style just looks a lot better on the big screen?

u/Noodlekeeper Nov 19 '24

TBF, I felt like whoever chose all the pictures for Cynthia did a bad job. A lot of her promo material looks kinda bad, but she looked absolutely great in the movie.

43

u/Nisi-Marie Nov 19 '24

Quite possibly. It was definitely spectacular on the big screen.

I would even recommend sitting a little further back. Our theater was set up where there were three rows in the front, then an aisle, and then the risers started. We were in the first row of the risers and there’s so much movement and action that I wish I was a little further back.

3

u/caseyjosephine Nov 20 '24

Just curious, did you watch the trailers on the big screen? I keep hearing this complaint, but the trailers have looked so gorgeous to me. I’ve only seen them on the big screen though.

3

u/ehrgeiz91 Nov 19 '24

Yeah the trailers and promo look hideous. Extremely flat and not colorful.

no, the musical kind of spans over a stretch of time, so half of it is when they're 18-19, and the second half is when they're like 26-27. the first half is set in a wizarding school (shiz) for the most part, and you're right in that it is similar to hogwarts

10

u/avatar__of__chaos Nov 20 '24

After watching the movie, even though I knew Madame Morrible's motives, Michelle Yeoh seems very motherlike, to Elphaba at least. She seems genuine with hints of cruelness in some scenes, and when she's cruel she really seems scary. Maybe the other obvious actress who can pull this off for me is Meryl Streep, but that would be too on the nose haha.

5

u/vanwyngarden Nov 21 '24

Totally agree about Michelle! She also admitted she didn’t even know what the musical was prior to being cast and honestly she reads flat. Doesn’t have the same passionate energy as literally everyone else in the cast.

3

u/Several_Pitch8841 Nov 21 '24

The cameos - my friend and I punched each other with excitement, and the entire theater cheered!

Love this review. Only thing I would change is that though Michelle Yeoh’s singing was more reciting, her acting was superb. I really hated her Madame Morrible towards the end. I hope that she pulls through with the singing in the opening of part II.

I will add that we are all looking forward to Jonathan Bailey in “As Long As You’re Mine.”

I thought Ariana was riffing on Reese Witherspoon's Elle Woods from "Legally Blonde" as much as she was drawing from Kristin Chenoweth's stage version of Glinda.

This is not a criticism, she was really funny and won me over too despite also being a skeptic.

13

u/AurelianoTampa Nov 19 '24

Thank you for the really in-depth review - I also saw the musical in NYC (although only with Kristen as the main star - Idina and Joel were out sick when I went...), and I was really on the fence about the movie version. But it sounds like I've had a similar history with it to you, so I think I might check it out!

3

u/Familiar_Phase_66 Nov 24 '24

I agree with your last point, especially about defying gravity. I think they just tried to do too much in the background during the song, and they kept stopping it for no reason. The song is powerful enough to stand on its own.

2

u/Nisi-Marie Nov 24 '24

Totally agree.

Now that the soundtrack is out and I have listened to it a few times, the sound mixing really did the movie a disservice.

It sounds….fine. But it utterly lacks the raw power that brings so much emotion to these moments. I needed the vocals to be louder and allowed to explode.

1

u/TwirlerGirl Nov 24 '24

Same. Just as I was getting into the song, they would stop it and have dialogue again. It was so chopped up that it ended up falling a bit flat for me. The ending was really the only part of the movie that felt like it dragged on a bit too long.

2

u/nikkerito Nov 25 '24

Just saw this last night. For the not-so-good I would include Idina menzel’s cameo song where she does the iconic defying gravity run. That took me OUT and it was super awkward imo lol. I get it was supposed to be fan service but I felt like we didn’t have enough time for that cause after they got on the train I was kinda ready for the movie to be over. Overall though it was WAY better than I expected and I loved how they were true to the songs even down to the leading dialogue. Usually they botch musical remakes so hard by having the leads do their own thing and it completely ruins the singalong experience, but I am super excited that they stuck with the original soundtrack!

Saw it last night- what cameos? Bridgerton guy?

4

u/Nisi-Marie Nov 21 '24

If you saw the movie, you saw the wizomania piece. The stage show in the Emerald Coty

got it, didnt know it had a name

How obvious was the autotune?

Edit: not sure why the downvotes. They’ve used a substantial amount of “pitch correction” (particularly for Jonathan Bailey). Just curious to know how distracting it is.

11

u/Nisi-Marie Nov 20 '24

It wasn’t autotune, but like I mentioned in the last bullet, I would have liked more raw power to come through. But I can’t think of many movie musicals that do indeed provide that. Being a live theater fan, I know how much more it CAN be.

The sound track will be released on Friday, I am looking forward to seeing how well it translated.

u/Tiny-Composer-6641 Nov 20 '24

How did you decide the score was 10/10 (perfection) when you felt there were at least three problems big enough for you to point out? This inconsistency shows you are still waaaay too caught up in the hype to give proper, honest feedback.

15

u/Nisi-Marie Nov 20 '24

There were SO many ways that this could have gone wrong, so many fans of the original movie and the stage show to disappoint….the fact that they managed to balance all of that and still produce something great, is amazing.

My negatives were minor compared the scale of the overall movie. I don’t think you could point to any 10/10 movie and not find any areas for improving. If you want to split hairs, I could go 9.5/10, but the bottom line is that they did a wonderful job.
