Discussion Seth Rogen doesn't get enough credit for the sheer volume of decent to high-quality movies and shows he's made

Seth Rogen has been a major figure in the film industry for almost two decades now, and in that time, a lot has been said about him, his abilities, the type of movies he makes and more recently, his political values

The one thing I've rarely seen people discuss is his insane record in terms of well made movies and shows (both as a performer and producer)

Just in the past few years, he has acted in movies like Dumb Money, Fablemans, Long Shot and American Pickle, while producing TMNT:Mutant Mayhem, Joy Ride, Good Boys and Blockers. That's without talking about his hit-making run in the mid 2000s to mid 2010s, or his TV show resume, which is arguably even more impressive (he's literally about to come out with a show that has near-universal critical acclaim pre-release)

Unlike other leading men who have a lot of well regarded stuff in their filmography, Rogen isn't really playing a numbers game. The man hasn't really been in a whole lot, it's just that a large portion of what he does do, is some version of good

I think his work as a writer and producer has surpassed a lot of his work as an actor, he just isn't in the spotlight for it and that's fine. Some of those works may not have existed without him.

u/Lexinoz 14d ago

IIRC, Seth Rogan was a noteable part of why Invincible was made into a show. He writes and voices a main character even.

921

u/RapturesOwn 14d ago

Same for Preacher I believe. He's done a lot for graphic novel adaptations.

621

u/ImmortalMoron3 13d ago

Yeah, he's clearly a big indie comic fan. He was a big reason for The Boys getting made as well.

236

u/RapturesOwn 13d ago

Man it's wild reading The Boys after seeing the show. Totally different, but I love em both artistically.

85

u/Gnoha 13d ago

I tried reading The Boys and there is some extremely racist and homophobic stuff in there. I wanted to like it and I love other stuff by Garth Ennis but he just comes across like a total scumbag with the way he wrote The Boys.

70

u/Malphos101 13d ago

Are the characters bigoted or is the writing itself that way? From what I have seen on the show (which I know is a more nuanced version of the comics) the whole point is that these supers are just people who given power to inflict their will however they see fit, good or bad, and what that would entail.

46

u/HalloweenBlues 13d ago

I don't know much about the writer but the character is bigoted and Hughie eventually gets fed up and calls him out on it. And the character kind of owns up to it. But it is all pretty gratuitous

80

u/TheHemogoblin 13d ago

If Garth Ennis is anything, it's gratuitous lol

23

u/Velorian 13d ago

hell he starts at gratuitous and goes from there.

He often has the subtly of an insult covered brick thrown through a window.

55

u/browncharliebrown 13d ago

The writer is extremely Liberal ( like actively pushing for representation in comics wrote the first solo Gay Superhero comic), however I think Ennis gets a lot more shit than Morrison ( who also wrote a lot of edgy stuff that has aged poorly) because Ennis basically decided that he never show why the stereotypes are problematic. Like I can tell you that Metatextually the reason why the female is an Asian character who never talks or is given is meant to be a commentary on how Asian character are written in comics but I don't know how most people would know that

3

u/Special_Kestrels 13d ago

The comic and the show aren't even close to the same. Soldier Boy is pretty much the complete opposite on the comic. Homelander uses him as a sex toy

12

u/browncharliebrown 13d ago

The show is not more nuanced Than the comics. It's less gratotious and the supes themselves are more nuanced but only to the point that the nuance is that the boys are just terrible people in the book. Like the show softens a lot of characters on all sides loses the core thesis on why the boys aren't Superheroes. It's because they aren't heroes at all.

Part of it is that as I understand it, Ennis HATES superheroes other than Superman, so he will use his stories to rip them endlessly. The Boys is also the tail end of 2000s edgelord "humor"

I got viscerally upset recently when I read someone opine that both the Boys and Invincible shows are massive improvements on the source material.

That's completely true of The Boys. But it's not true of Invincible. The comic was phenomenal and the show is about as good imo

46

u/AhmedF 13d ago

Some contenxt: Robert Kirkman wrote Invincible and he's also part of the show, and I think he's said he's happy to have opportunities to go down paths he could not in the comic book.

8

u/Walkabeast 13d ago

I do wish they kept tek knight more faithful to the comics. Heroically saving the day by fucking a meteor was hilarious, even if it was just a hallucination.

15

u/johnbrownmarchingon 13d ago

The female characters, especially Debbie Grayson, are better in the show at the very least.

10

u/Gnoha 13d ago

I mostly agree in regards to Invincible. I do think the show is slightly better than the comics, but the comics are great too. I think the entire arc with Omniman in season 1 was done way better in the show because it really builds up the mystery of it. The "reveal" of who Omniman is felt rushed in the comics and didn't hit the same for me.

Like someone else said, the show is done by the same writer who did the comics and they are using it as an opportunity to improve certain aspects of the comics that he felt could be better.

4

u/PlayingDoomOnAGPS 13d ago

Invincible was so much fun because it really let go of the notion that this as all happening in the real world and embraced what the world would be like where all this shit was happening.

Yeah, in Marvel 616 everyone knows vampires exist and aliens have invaded Earth and but the backdrop of everything is still that it's basically our world and that shit only comes to the forefront when when desired.

In Invincible, the world is indelibly altered by everything that happens. Instead of nerfing OP characters, they explore what their OP characteristics would really mean and play it out much longer term than we're used to. No resets.

Marvel and Dc have been consumed for decades with being eternal, and I get that. It's not like I want to not have Superman or Spider-man any more. But Kirkman's willingness to play it out once and let it be definitely contributed to Invincible being something special. Same for The Walking Dead comic TBH. I was reading monthly and was absolutely floored by the unannounced finale. 10/10.

Preacher and The Boys. He wrote and directed the pilots.

60

u/lemphin 13d ago

Only for Preacher

5

u/CollinsCouldveDucked 13d ago

I feel like he learned a lot on preacher that lent to his subsequent producer work being much stronger and less diluted.

Preacher tries but it's mostly trying to adapt something well beyond it's budget and as a result is very stop start in terms of it's plot and spends too much time spinning it's wheels with pointless interpersonal drama.

It has a lot of stuff I liked but it mostly fails to live up to it's potential.

60

u/trainercatlady 13d ago

Fucking love preacher. How the hell they got away with broadcasting it i have no idea

38

u/BerserkerBrit 13d ago

AMC probably gave a bit of leeway since they were a premium channel. Especially since they were looking for a show to be the new Breaking Bad or Mad Men, they gave him a bit more reign to do things in the comics.

4

u/trainercatlady 13d ago

Not wrong, but squeezing a piece of soul out of an exploded man's entrails is a bit extreme even for premuim cable.

9

u/strikingtwice 13d ago

I really love the preacher books and enjoyed the show but the show was SO out there that I found myself wondering if this would be at all appealing to someone who had no affiliation with the source material. It’s really really absurd

9

u/Twichytail 13d ago

I stumbled into that show and loved how weird and out there it was, granted the performances fucking KILLED IT in selling me such an insane story. I binged the entire first season and started telling people to watch that show.

8

u/trainercatlady 13d ago

I understand why not, but god it's such a shame that Joe Gilgun isn't in more things. The dude is a phenomenal actor.

4

u/tokes_4_DE 13d ago

Watch brassic if you havent, joe gilgun is fantastic in it and its based on his life growing up in a small town and his struggles with mental health. Its hysterical, and still has plenty of heartwarming moments while not shying away from the serious struggles with bipolar / depression he goes through. It reminds me of like a UK letterkenny. Also dominic west is in it and hes so damn funny as well.

Yeah, he voices Allen the Alien.

15

u/zeroxray 13d ago

also the boys

76

u/TheTresStateArea 14d ago

Allen is hardly a main character. Tertiary at best, for now.

But yes he produced invincible, Preacher, The Boys.

130

u/AllCity_King 14d ago edited 13d ago

Allen is absolutely one of the main characters of Invincible.

99

u/ImmortalMoron3 13d ago

He will be, just not for where the show is right now.

66

u/MFish333 13d ago

Allen is important to the plot, but he probably has like the 10-15th most lines and screentime of any character at this point

45

u/TheTresStateArea 13d ago

He has a total of like ten episodes across all seasons where he is present.

An important role? Yes he will have one. A main a character? No, simply no.

34

u/ABeardedPartridge 13d ago

He'll probably be a main character (well, as much as Characters like Rex, Robot, and Monster girl are main characters) when next season launches, but I agree, he's more of a background character now. He's super duper important to the story though.

8

u/TheTresStateArea 13d ago

Totally on board with this. Super important. But just not enough screen time to be a "main" character.

6

u/ABeardedPartridge 13d ago

We should get a ton more of him from here on out. Allen was one of my favorite characters in the comics, so I'm there for it. Seth Rogan has killed it so far portraying him imo.

He has zero writing credits for the first three seasons.

163

u/RapturesOwn 14d ago

Producer for all of them though.

149

u/Photo_Synthetic 13d ago

Ben Stiller doesn't have writing credits in Severance either. Producers are sometimes very involved in the writing process and often don't get writing credit. Just how it goes sometimes. The best content is very collaborative and the best producers let writers get all the credit.

45

u/Wimbly512 13d ago

Bad example, Stiller has directed 11 out of 19 episodes. Even without a writing credit he would have a clear influence on the show.

26

u/Thick_Interaction_22 13d ago

This may have more to do with guild rules. Many cases of credit limitations creating confusion on who did what that limits the viewers understanding of the extent of collab involved. Awards also dictate a certain pro forma for how recognitions are bestowed. It’s very pro forma and not production reality.

10

u/ShadyGuy_ 13d ago

I recently got into Severance and I was amazed when I found out Ben Stiller had such a big influence on this show. Eventhough there's a lot of humor it goes into very dark places sometimes. It's not something I expected from him.

6

u/polkasocks 13d ago

Escape From Danemora shifted my perception of Ben Stiller from "funny guy who has directed some stuff" to..."damn Ben Stiller is a GOOD director"

Then, add Severance to an already great CV, and now I think of him as a creative genius.

12

u/NeverEat_Pears 13d ago

He's a producer on the show but he's never made any claim he takes part in the writing. Dan Erickson is the showrunner, creator and head writer.

People always forget Preacher too, I recommend it to everyone who likes the boys but they never watch it, it was so good and the original comic was written by the same guy

10

u/77BakedPotato77 13d ago

Preacher deserved the same level of popularity as The Boys.

The source material is awesome enough, but the acting and directing is fantastic.

As you noted they have the same writer, Garth Ennis. I wouldn't call myself a comic book fan necessarily, but I enjoy going down rabbit holes reading about comics and I've done just that many times with his work.

If you haven't looked into his other work, I suggest it.

I assumed that’s what this post was gonna be about.

I thought I was done with “superheroes but there’s a twist!” stories so I was late to The Boys but it is impressively well-paced and keeps you actually engaged with the characters despite how cynical and deeply unpleasant the world they live in is.

It’s a cliched comparison but it reminds me of Better Call Saul or The sopranos in that way.

I’ve always enjoyed Rogen but I truly didn’t think he had something like that in him

It's the same with literally anything.

"Nobody is talking about this" - while it's a fairly common talking point.

Either these people are wilfully blind and ignorant in an era where we have so much information at our fingertips that it's potentially harmful to our mental health, or they're deliberately misrepresenting their argument.

60

u/godver3 13d ago

I think that's a fair comment to be honest. Ask most anyone about Seth Rogen's career they're likely not thinking about his more recent accomplishments.

52

u/RadkoGouda 13d ago

Thats his point though. Hes looked at as a meh stoner version of like Kevin Hart when in reality his resume is really good. Even before his more recent accomplishments.

Superbad, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, This is the End, Pineapple Express, 50/50

Hes been in a lot of great movies and wrote half of them.

I think the other day there was a “drop one and all of their films” with Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, and Jim Carrey, so he might be referencing what he saw there. In fairness to OP, just looking at that thread, Rogen was absolutely not getting enough credit. You can still say he’s the one to drop, but there were a lot of comments in that thread that really seemed to be downplaying his work and acting like it wasn’t even remotely a difficult choice.

68

u/angelomoxley 14d ago

Most of reddit seems to think he's just the stoner guy with the dumb laugh who hasn't made anything good since Pineapple Express.

Redditors, especially in this sub, seem incapable of just stating their like or dislike for anything. They need to frame their opinion as something contrary to the mainstream. So they can’t just say “I like very popular actor Seth Rogan”, it has to be “Seth Rogan doesn’t get enough credit.” They can’t say “I like this movie that millions of other people also like”, it has to be “This movie is underrated.” Now, they’re making an argument for why this very popular thing actually isn’t popular enough, and they’re here to drop truth bombs for the masses.

By the way, I personally like chronically underrated actor Keanu Reeves, and also think that The Dark Knight and Logan aren’t appreciated as two of the best superhero movies. And it might just be me, but I think the original Ghostbusters is still the best one. Those are just my hot takes, bro.

12

u/i4got872 13d ago

I was just on the film subreddit last night, they did a “you lose one and all of their films”

It was Rogen, Sandler, will Ferrell and Jim Carrey. The majority of the comment said “Rogen Has to go, and it’s not even close.” Nearly all agreed carrey is untouchable for the truman show etc.

People were acting like Sandler’s movies were better than Rogen’s and it’s a vast difference too. It was kind of baffling. This made me feel Rogen is actually underappreciated.

In fact, that might be why this post was made at all.

So you're saying I should watch Rose Byrne's Australian body of work for research and stuff.

u/DeckardsDark 13d ago edited 13d ago

I'm not really sure American Pickle is really reinforcing your point here.

Plus he gets tons of credit and is about to have a whole apple show about running a movie studio that appears to have an absurdly generous budget.

6

u/alan_smitheeee 13d ago

Or Santa Inc.

138

u/SoCalThrowAway7 14d ago

He’s got a net worth of $80 million. I think he gets plenty of credit

67

u/digital_cucumber 13d ago

That's debit.

8

u/PureLock33 13d ago

I'm sure many banks would happily extend him a line of credit or two.

Nice try Seth Rogen

Point Grey does not miss

u/Hallowhero 14d ago

Seth Rogan's publicists out and about lately.

13

u/RealLiveLawyer 13d ago

No lie, its a fucking pro-seth rainstorm in this subreddit.

25

u/TheSuburbs 13d ago

Seriously. A friend of mine photographed his "Houseplant" smoking accessories stuff when it first started. Never got paid, and was consistently ignored when followed up on payment. My opinion of him plummeted after that.

9

u/HarassmentFord 13d ago

Didn't pay the artists who worked on Sausage Party either.

4

u/Last-Atmosphere2439 13d ago

Seriously! The guy even linked Seth's IMDB page which was a really poor plan cause it's filled with iffy "producer" credits, voice work and a really really long list of absolutely terrible movies where he actually acted going back a couple decades until you get to Superbad etc. And his writing credits are things like Sausage Party and Neighbors 2.

I guess The Studio is coming out this week so the PR guys are starting up.

*Evan Goldberg does not get enough credit...

18

u/haleme 13d ago

He is legitimately great as Steve Wozniak, wish he'd do more roles like that

14

u/RastamonGanja 13d ago

Don’t forget about Pineapple Express, one of the best modern stoner films.

Marketing post for his new show

4

u/Obyson 14d ago

He actually would rather be a writer and producer and doesn't consider himself a good actor but he just keeps getting these random big roles he can't turn down.

30

u/kb24fgm41 13d ago

I actually think he's super overrated, I don't think he's funny at all.

6

u/RealLiveLawyer 13d ago

I refuse to believe that the pro-Seth Rogan shit being posted here the last 3 weeks is anything other than marketing/PR.

10

u/MusclyArmPaperboy 14d ago

I want him to bring back the Great Canadian Pottery Throwdown!

It’s crazy how underrated TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is

15

u/exodyne 13d ago

I wouldn't exactly call a 95% RT score and same IMDB rating as Sleeping Beauty, A Bugs Life, and Fox and the Hound as being "underrated".

3

u/Fart_Leviathan 13d ago

What are you talking about? It's consistently rated well across all platforms regardless whether they are critics' or audiences' ratings.

62

u/RhuleOverEverything 14d ago

If anything he's massively overrated

31

u/Whitecaps87 13d ago

He's insufferable. He's the embodiment of the "DUDE WEED LMAO" stereotype.

11

u/RhuleOverEverything 13d ago

Couldn't agree more

26

u/CheekyMunky 13d ago

Yeah, sorry, just not that into dick and weed jokes

11

u/protestsong-00 13d ago

Seth Rogen is a fucking joke of a human being.

12

u/Highlander-00073 13d ago

Seth Rogen is a horrible actor. Plays the same character in everything. All the movies he's in suck.

9

u/Be-skeptical 13d ago

Whenever I see posts like this I get uncomfortable.

Why do you care what credit he gets??!

He’s a wealthy man that gets to write and produce whatever he wants.

6

u/troy_caster 13d ago

Eww. No.

3

u/Swallagoon 14d ago

He gets a lot of credit. He’s quite famous.

3

u/mite115 13d ago

What's your favorite movie of his?

3

u/HellaWavy 13d ago

That man is responsible for two of my fave shows: Future Man and Preacher.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/birdsacre 13d ago

Wasn’t he involved with Preacher?

3

u/BroodLord1962 13d ago

It's personal taste mate, he's not someone I've seen that much because his type of movies aren't the type of movies I watch

3

u/Grape1921 13d ago

YMMV but I have never liked him in anything. Not my cup of tea.

3

u/Worst_Username_Evar 13d ago

He’s rich as fuck, I’m not worried about him not getting enough credit.

3

u/HotdoghammerOG 13d ago

He made millions and is famous. That certainly feels like enough credit…

34

u/bufci 14d ago

Hard disagree, he used to have a few good movies. But recently he has tried to get into dramatic roles and it’s not working. Hes not a good actor at all

6

u/alundaio 13d ago

are you kidding? Guy gets too much credit. Please stop casting him as a voice actor.

10

u/DraugrDraugr 13d ago

Thought this post was /r/unpopularopinion

3

u/likwitsnake 13d ago

I mean you're just listing a bunch of movies he's been in some of those are very middling quality.

8

u/WonderMajestic8286 13d ago

He has played himself in every roll I can think of. My take is he has good Hollywood connections to put him in the same roll repeatedly, but his talent as an actor is low.

5

u/EyeDirect3477 13d ago

The most unfunny comedy actor in Hollywood. He makes everything he’s in worse.

2

u/Nizamark 14d ago

credit from whom?

2

u/icansmellcolors 13d ago

He also does work/contributes to Alzheimer's research.

2

u/End3rWi99in 13d ago

He has had a stellar run going with streaming series he was involved either as writer, director, or producer -- Preacher, Black Monday, Future Man, The Boys, Invincible are all fantastic.

I'm also really hoping he can get Darkwing Duck made. That show would be so good as a more adult oriented reboot.

2

u/Ok_Mention5826 13d ago

The boys and Invincible too!! Such great shows

2

u/sin2xcos2x 13d ago

Doesn't he, though?

2

u/Omnom_Omnath 13d ago

Nah he’s rated just fine. No more no less

2

u/jjwhitaker 13d ago

Mutant Mayhem was really fun...

2

u/legalizethesenuts 13d ago

He’s behind shows like Preacher, The Boys, and Invincible. Gotta love it.

2

u/its_the_smell 13d ago

He was involved in Future Man, among others, and I think that show is hilarious.

2

u/McSqueezle 13d ago

I think the sheer amount of fame, fortune and adoration is credit enough.
