It was used sparingly and really well to enhance the 3D experience and lessen any motion blur that would result in a lesser 3D experience. I thought it was great!
Motionblur doesn't lessen the 3d experience at all though.
Avatar 2 constantly dipping and changing between frame rates absolutely did though. I wanted to vomit. It made the high frame rate look like a cheap soap opera and made the 24fps content look stuttery, with neither working as a result.
Even worse was that the 48fps compromised the 24fps master copy because the motionblur and shutter angle were different to suit the 48fps and broken in the 24fps as a result.
“We created new 48 frames-per-second inter-frames to smooth out some of the strobing and some of the rapid camera moves – during the viperwolf chase, the thanator chase, things like that – to improve the stereoscopic experience” - James Cameron
Essentially having more frames during fast sequences made the 3D effect clearer and less blurry (therefore more pronounced, clearer 3D during such sequences)

The HFR 3D in Avatar 2 is the coolest thing I've ever seen. Can't wait and will probably see multiple times in IMAX
