Baby Names Husbands cousin (kinda) used our name

Update: Thank you everyone for your input lol!! After talking with my husband some more, we both agree we love her name so much and don’t want to change it- even if they’re similar, it is what it is lol! It might be cute when they meet eventually. Pregnancy hormones got the best of me for a bit, I think I was just in shock and totally wasn’t expecting it lol 🤣 thanks again!!

Original: Ok so my husbands cousin (first cousin) had her baby today and they named her Arora. The name we’ve had picked out for years is Alora- and we even have ordered her swaddle, name sign, etc. I’m due next month. We were due a month apart.

Our name has been secret the entire time, no one knows it except for us. It just happened by coincidence that they picked a very similar name (they also kept it a secret).

Baby Names Favorite baby name is now off the table and need help finding another

Upvotes

I’ve had my heart set on Betty for my entire pregnancy and my husband agreed to put it on our list. It was my grandmother’s name and we’ve been calling her a nickname based off of this for months. But last week he suddenly realized/decided that it sounded too similar to a word he doesn’t like from his native language and now the name is off the table for him.

We’re 5 weeks out from her due date, back at the drawing board and having trouble agreeing on anything. Our short list is Ida, Lydia, Camille, and Rosemary, but none feel right (probably because I’m still holding onto Betty).

I thought maybe it could help to crowdsource some opinions or other options.

I’m would describe my style as either vintage botanical or “prairie-core.” My husband likes simple and feminine names. We’re dealing with multiple cultures (American, North African, French, and German) so that’s also a factor. Here are the other names I like that didn’t make the short list:

Ada Anais Azalea Edith Etta Daisy Jane Linnea Lucy Louise Maeve Rose Violet

Fun and Games Names that are homophones for letters

I thought this might be a fun exercise. I am thinking of what names are homophones for letters of the alphabet:

Katie (KT) Jael (JL) Elodie (LOD) Jay (J) Deedee (DD) Effie (FE)

Interesting that only one of the ones I thought of is a masculine name. What others can you think of?

Baby Names Is Charlotte a good name or too old?

Upvotes

Hey All!

My cousin just had her first baby (girl) 🎉

-> We are looking for names that sounds sweet, feminine and soft. It need not be modern, but it shouldn not sound old either.

We shortlisted a few names, but so far, Charlotte and Stacy seems to be the family favourite.

Please help me pick. What image do you get when you hear a Charlotte? And what image do you get when you think of Stacy?

Also, any other recommendations are welcome. She doesn't have a middle name (as per local customs)

Baby Names Maisy Pronounciation

My wife and I are considering the name Maisy for our baby girl, due in July. The pronunciation rhymes with daisy. Is that how you read it, or did you initially assume it was pronounced like Macy? Please vote below!

Discussion My mom wants a grandchild named after her but I don’t want to

Exactly as the title says, my mom has asked me many many times if I could give my daughter her middle name. She has also asked each of my siblings for the same thing but no one has done it yet. I’ve had a very rough past with my mom, although I’ve forgiven her for most things. But still for that reason I don’t feel she’s been enough of a role model to me for me to name my child after her. My other thought is that I don’t believe you get to ask someone to name their child after you. I think that’s something that is meant to be done as an honorable surprise. Even with these feelings I also feel bad for thinking this way. I know it’s something that she wants that I have the power to give to her but I just cannot get myself to do it. 😕 Has anyone dealt with this or something similar?

Baby Names Looking for a unique boy name that isn’t too out there

Upvotes

My wife and I are having our first kid and through whole pregnancy we thought we were having a girl, so girl names were the only ones we were trying to agree on! After last ultrasound we found out we will be having a boy and are finding it way harder to agree on a name or even think of one! Van was our first thought but now maybe thinking Riley.

Baby Names Retro cool or stale boy name?

In need of objective advice!

We have a toddler son, Ira John, and love his name. We hyphenated our last names (think a short, common last name hyphenated with a long name with a complicated spelling and a “z”), so shorter is better.

We both like the name Barry - am I crazy that this is unique, retro cool and has great nickname potential? (Bear, blueberry when he is fussy, etc.) Or is it too outdated?

I have always had a crush on Barry Bostwick in the Rocky Horror Picture Show so I think that’s why I think it’s hip. It’s a recognizable name but uncommon today (notable exception: Barry Keoghan).

My best friend who has great taste in names dislikes it and says it’s a cousin to names I really dislike (Gary, Larry). She said she would pretend to love it if we picked it though. My other best friend said she liked it (but is very nice and potentially sparing my feelings?).

The other name we like most is Leo but it’s very popular. Other options we like but don’t love: Bram, Eliot, Adrien, Bernie, Erik

Thanks in advance!

Name Change Neutral E names?

Upvotes

I have a chosen name that I love very much (Rayven), but my deadname starts with E and I think it would be easier when I actually come out IRL to use an E name. I chose Elliott as a middle name and I am considering it as a first name but I know an Elliot already and that feels kinda weird. I also have a sibling whose chosen name is Iris and their deadname starts with I, so I think it would be kinda fun to use Eris so we could "match", on the other hand that's also a reason not to use Eris. I've also considered names like Evan(which I like but my last name starts with Van so that's not perfectly ideal), Everett(which I don't love), and Ezra(it's okay just maybe not my favorite). Also I'm not going to use Eli/Elijah because one of my close friends is named that.

Do you have any more ideas of neutral(but maybe masc-leaning) names that start with E?

Also I chose two middle names because I like them both so it could be either something that works with my current second middle name, Aster, or something that works with Rayven as a middle name (or both).

Thank you!

Help! Due in 3 days and still haven’t decided on baby girls name. Husband is partial to one, me the other. I go back and forth now between Gemma and Georgia and truly can’t decide!! Brother is Oliver/Ollie. How to decide?! We are in the northeast US and I don’t see either name much around us. Also wanted to use Nancy as a middle name although not sure it goes with either.

Baby Names My wife and I cannot settle on a name. Help!

My wife and I are close to having our first child. A baby girl! We have a list of names but having a hard time agreeing one.

We are nature lovers, but also like simple, classic, folky names.

Liora Emory Nora Charlotte Noah

These are the names that are at the top of the list. Liora is my wife’s favorite and I’m struggling to love it.

Open to any alternatives or names that fit this aesthetic that might help us settle!

Discussion Suddenly seeing your babies name everywhere

My baby girl is 7 weeks old now and I feel like I’m seeing her name everywhere! I never used to see her name before, perhaps I just wasn’t looking and now I am more aware. For context; we named her Lydia, which I’m aware isn’t incredibly unique, I wanted a classic name that I felt wasn’t ‘overused’. I’m mainly seeing the name everywhere on social media and it’s adults that have the name so not actually seeing many babies with the name.

Did anyone else feel like they started seeing their babies name everywhere once they were born?

Baby Names Need boy name help!

Upvotes

Ok we are due in mid may with our first and my husband and I are struggling to find boy names we love, gender is a surprise - we have a few that we both like which are cooper and callum, I wanted to use the middle name Lee (family name) however with our last name (has a double L) callum Lee doesn’t sound right to either of us. My husband loves the thought of nicknames based off the first name (I.e. coop, cal). For context our top 2 girl names are Murphy and Margot

Baby Names Zinnia, Tansy, Sabina... Any other recommendations? Help!

Hello Name nerds..

I think i got most of my ideas for our baby girl due in August from browsing this sub for years. I've always loved thinking about names...

Which do you like best? We are in the UK and I don't want something too popular...

I also like Pia and Clementine but my other half does not.

Any other suggestions for a summer / nature / sounding name... The last name is a tree starting with a H and also a girls name...

Thank you!

Discussion Is this logical?

I am having a boy in September, there is a name that I'm so unsure of though I do like it. It's Bjorn But im so afraid of him getting bullied and being called BJ or another word 😂. I'm only worried because I grew up around a boy whose initials were BJ and he was bullied relentlessly until senor year. I dont know if im over thinking it or if it's even a concern I should have.

Help me out all 😂 Or if there is another spelling variation for the name i would be so grateful.

Baby Names Working on a middle name.

My wife and I are having our 2nd girl and working out names. We’re liking Gwendolyn, with its multiple options for nn. Our last name is Ray and we’re kinda struggling on a middle name that keeps a smooth flow.

Totally open to any suggestions!

-Edit to include our taste

We will end up using a nickname for her most of the time. Having a middle name that flows with that too would be a cherry on top. I’m leaning on Winnie, my wife seems partial to Gwen but likes Winnie as well. Our first daughter is Eleanora Lynn, and I almost always just use Nora Lynn.
