Army National Guard FAQ - Please Read Before Posting

Here is a rundown of some of the most common questions on this sub. Remember, your mileage may vary. When in doubt, ask your Recruiter/NCO Support Channel about your specific situation.

This post is current as of 20160726, if a link is broken or if content is out-of-date shoot me a PM. If you have suggestions for the questions/answers below, let me know and I will add to the post.

Two quick caveats before we get started:

  • Whether you are already in, or still thinking about it, remember OPSEC on on this sub. Do not post personally identifiable information or any information that can damage Army/Air Force operations. When in doubt, message a moderator before posting. Violating OPSEC can be a UCMJ offense. Click here for more information.

  • If you are currently experiencing a crisis, remember, you are NOT ALONE. Call your team leader, call your squad leader, call your 1SG, call Military One Source, call 911. Call until someone picks up. There are resources available to help you.

I am thinking about joining the National Guard.

I am already in the National Guard.

Edit: for grammar/spelling.

Salty Rant State specific questions, such as about state tuition benefits, SAD pay, promotion lists, **MUST** have the state in the title.

Just because I’ve had to remove several recently. It literally makes no fucking sense to ask a question that has 54+ possible answers without narrowing it down. Please use your head and bring attention to the question by putting the state in the title of your post.

Initial Training What's up with morons joining NG and asking for "high speed training" units in a RESERVE component of the military?

Every day; (because im chronically online),

there's morons asking for the most high-speed units, with the most training, jumping out of helicopters, shooting shit, going on urban ops.

Buddy, your first step shoulda been going active and seeking an 18x contract.
You literally picked the RESERVES. So you get reservist-style training.

For those about to downvote here's a list of training/otempo.
1: seal team 6 is the highest training OTEMPO. Tier 1. Always in a state of war.
2: green berets: Tier 2. Not in a "state of war", but always ready. (active duty)
3: Active army: ranger battallion, not in a "state of war" but lots of training.
.
And all the way at the bottom you have natty guard; reservists in terms of training and "readiness".

So you're telling me you pick the bottom of the barrel, and yet seek the shiniest turd in terms of training?

bro just stfu and put the fries in the bag.

incoming retards: "If we do this in my unit, then every unit must do it too" no one is asking what you're doing. just saying in general

Career Advice In reenlistment window and looking for the most “high speed”unit/training, any state

Willing to look at CAG or ISA feeder pipelines but any high speed SMU.

CV GT 109 ACFT 361 Sharpshooter Mechanic Badge

ASR, AAM, COAx3

Let me know your thoughts, don’t DM me to apply - I want to make up my own mind.

I’ll have a crispy panko fish sandwich, 20 piece spicy honey bbq nuggs and a thin mint vanilla frosty (just got off ABCP and DTF [down to feed])

Career Advice I’m enlisting Monday 11B in The Wisconsin National Guard

I guess I’m just wondering what OSUT is like and a general idea of what drill weekends look like and the summer training exercises. My intention with the guard is they pay for school obviously and I’m also thinking about commissioning through my schools ROTC program, I figure the experience would do me some good, I know I’ll never be the same as a mustang officer but it can’t hurt right?.

Initial Training 15U AIT and what it's like?

Howdy, I recently enlisted in the SC National Guard and I was wondering if anyone could tell what AIT for 15u would generally be like or what fort eustis will be like or just any fun stories from their time in Eustis. Or just any good ways to prep for AIT or BCT

Career Advice Cav scouts in PA or NC Army National Guard?

Im stuck between the PA Guard and NC Guard (I'm from PA but now live in NC). I'm curious about any Cav Scouts in either state and what you think of the job? I've heard 19D is a job that sounds cool on paper but they never do anything in actuality. (No idea how true that is). Just curious if in either of these states 19Ds can actually do cool guy shit with real training and deployments and stuff or if drill is filled with inventory and fiddleFing around. Thanks in advance.

Career Advice Most high speed training and what state?

Hey all, I’m throwing this out because I’d like to know. In your opinion, which state has the best training, best opportunity for schools, actual job development in the guard, etc? I just look online and hear from others and I just get pissed because my state doesn’t give me any of that. I’m willing to drive up to 8-10 hrs or fly for a state that’s willing to do good training and get actually developed. I’m an 11 series and no I’m not mentioning the state except it’s in the southeast.

Title 32 Volunteering for ADOS orders less than 180 days and over 50 miles away

I recently volunteered to go on ADOS orders. Readiness tells me they're just until the FY ends but that's due to the funding. There's a chance they could extend, but he understandably doesn't want to make any promises. My current residence is barely over 50 miles away as well.

I'm mainly wondering if I'm getting myself into a horrible daily commute or if my location will actually screw me out of getting on these orders. Doing my own research tells me over 50 miles but under 180 days it becomes TDY with per diem. That would be awesome for me in terms of pay but I'm worried it'll make me an undesirable candidate.

I also don't know if they would provide lodging at a hotel or if I'm just expected to commute from home or find a short term lease.

If I get on this it'll be my first time on orders since BOLC, anyone have input?

Benefits 3 year contract worth it?

Hey, im 19 and located in Tennessee. I was thinking about signing a 3 year contract strictly to pay for tuition at utk. After my 20 weeks of training, do i simply just enroll in school and do my "one weekend" every month and "2 weeks in the summer"? I feel like it's very easy to be deceived signing a contract like this, so any clarification helps 🙏

Career Advice Think of transition to the guard

Currently on active duty thinking about transitioning to the NG or ETS’ing completely after this contract (total of 12 yrs TIS at the end of this contract). Problem is I can’t seem to find anything about whether the guard would require me to go indef. does anyone happen to know if I would be required to do an indefinite contract or if I could try the NG before committing to something bigger?

Title 10 Contract ends during deployment

My unit is supposed to be getting deployed, but my contract ends during the deployment. I don’t want to reenlist because I don’t see how the national guard can benefit me anymore. Do I have to go on the deployment ? My leadership made it seem like It’s not a for sure thing that I don’t have to go.

Career Advice Officer Resignation timing

For context since previously asked questions were looking for early release. I am 1 year away from completing my MSO and fully intend on completing my MSO. I have seen the letter I need to write and submit.

My only question is on timing. My S1 fully time NCO wasn’t positive. How far out do I need to submit my resignation letter? I’ve heard 1 year, 6 months, and that it can’t be submitted until my MSO is fully complete. Does it vary by state?

Discussion How do I get a Class A thru the Military?

I'll keep this post very short and simple. I got my bus driver's license for the military and I also have a jltv license and Bradley. I talked to my chain of command at drill and they said do some research. I figured I would do some research but also asking you guys. Let me know if you guys have any advice for how to present my case to the Captain and what requirements are.

Career Advice I need opinion on situation 88n

I'm in a wierd situation. I e4 11b prior active marines i was in a small cav scout unit. Getting close to end of guard enlistment my wife got a really good job out of state. So we moved bc I only had 2 years left on contract and was only doing online school. My rnco told me my last 6 months if I found a unit near me that would let me drill with them I could suta my last 6 months. I found a random pog unit they were more than happy to have enlisted help in the s-shops mainly s3 since being there alot of the officers have left includes the battalion co. With all new people and me not being a total dumbass even tho I am 11b I have become almost vital. Setting up radios, toc kits, showing where and how to implace security positions, sector sketchs basicly anything field related for alot of things to the point now with this being my last drill with them they offered me a staff position of 88n in the s-shop as a e5 or e6 for a 2 year extension and ist to there state. Is this even doable? To my understanding i would have to be an e5 promotable to e6 to take the spot and I have never even met an 88n so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion Any Texas National Guard nerd in here that can help me with this?

This is a serious post. If you could help out, please help out.

I know all the nitty and gritty of what to do to qualify for VA loans or that I think I know but what are some of the fastest ways as a Guard to qualify for VA loans.

Also, What/How can I do to transfer my education benefits to my spouse? I already have Master and don't plan on doing PhD but I don't want to have free money sitting around doing nothing. Thank you.

Title 32 MEB Question

I am currently 45 years old and at 21+ years of total time, but 17-ish years of combined time (I was on AD for 13 years before the guard). I am also 100% P&T through VA. I have recently been approached about a possible MEB due to worsening problems related to my VA rating.

My question is: If I MEB with less than 20 years combined points, do I start to receive retirement now, wait until 65, or get nothing because I already have VA?

Any help with even where to start looking would be greatly appreciated.

Title 10 Federal border mission

Can anyone tell me how good or bad the federal border mission is and how is the pay, what special pay or allowance ? Also was wondering what the schedule is like is it 4 on 4 off ? Will you actually have time off to relax and enjoy yourself, or is there anything to go even do on your time off ?

Benefits Is this really how easy it is?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Picture for context. Left AD in September and joined up right away in the NG.

Is it really as simple as letting the VA debt me on disability or is there proper paperwork that needs to be done? Unsure what to do here. Leadership says talk to this SFC and the SFC knows nothing about any sort of paperwork and is telling me to just let the VA handle the debt? It doesn’t seem right at all.
