A few years ago I did this surreal drawing called “The Playground” and a fellow Redditor u/dystopika animated it! I thought it was really cool.
I did this drawing around 4 years ago and the animation I believe took almost a year. I am super impressed by it. If you would like to see some more work I have a subreddit here r/AnthonyChristopherArt. Cheers!

This is the type of art where regardless of taste it’s understood to be marvelous.

This is so rad!
Any idea what kind of software was used for animating it??

u/dystopika 2d ago
It's all Photoshop + After Effects. This is a tutorial I made a while back (originally for an exploitative site that I think people should avoid called "hitrecord"), explaining the basics of my animation process:
Some of it's out of date (especially the site-specific stuff) but those are the basics.
Obviously, breaking down an elaborate art piece like this was extremely complicated, but what I'm doing with each element is pretty basic. I'm cutting the work into a lot of little pieces and turning every character into a puppet.

What in the Hieronymus Bosch, Edward Gorey, nightmare-inducing hell, I LOVE it. 😆 Especially the little flying fairy dude in the upper right corner.

I want to see your stuff turned into a film or a game so badly. It’s all amazing.

I would love to be a part of a metroidvania kind of game

I think you could totally make a game like an Obra Dinn style puzzle game in this art style and it would be absolutely phenomenal. Your work is phenomenal. It kind of gives me the vibes of a mature, dark version this old kids show called Ahhh! Real Monsters.

The combination of art and animation reminds me of Little Inferno. Its lovely.

The combination of art and animation in that game definitely gives it that dreamlike, almost otherworldly vibe.

This looks like it could be artwork for one of the Disco Elysium "Thoughts" in its Thought Cabinet

Just started my first proper playthrough of the game a few days ago and this was my exact first thought.

u/Spock_Vulcan 2d ago
aah you're in for a treat friend. Disco Elysium is probably the best narrative RPG i have ever played. I also needed a couple of attempts to get into it, but once i did, it was a great experience.

This gives me the oddest feeling, but not how you think. I'm from Sweden and grew up in the 90s. This feels like some odd sort of cartoon that got shown once on TV with double dubs. The original in a language I didn't understand and then swedish on top of it at the same time.
It happened a few times on the swedish cartoon programme I used to watch as a child, and it affected me intensely every time. "And here is a polish video about a cat losing her kittens and sense of identity and her face as a result."
Then I'd go to bed, not scared, but confused and agitated. I know this wasn't your intent, but your art dug up an old memory. Thank you.

That's beautiful. Thanks for sharing this with me.

u/Nine-LifedEnchanter 2d ago
Thank You for your art! I'm going to see if I can find the cartoon that affected me the most now. A boy is turned into a squirrel by, like, 20 pairs of witches' hands as punishment for being nosy.

It reminds me a bit of Edward Gorey's work, which I mean in a very complimentary way. It's wonderful! I love the depth the piece has. Thanks for sharing it! Great job for both of you - love that it's a collab work.

Did they do the animator just do this off their own initiative? If so, you must have been so gassed seeing someone do that to your drawing. What a wicked surprise!

How many years will it take to team up with a watchmaker and get this as mechanical framed wall art?
I need this in my guest bathroom.
Or front door.
Or both.
