Who is giving this bird frisée lettuce for nesting material?

I’m cracking up at whatever dog toy insides it must’ve found in someone’s yard and is using it. Perfect repurposing lol

Probably the fluff from the inside of a patio chair cushion. Damn squirrels ripped a huge hole in one of ours and we saw birds stopping by, picking out the filling.

I love brushing dogs & cats outside, so I can leave their hair/fur on the deck for the birds. Over the next few days I can literally watch as all kinds of birds come by to pick it up as insulation & padding for their nests.

Yes there must be a LOT of birds out there with my mini schnauzer hair in their nest. I have to shave him every two months or so and I usually throw a few handfuls out there for my bird homies.

We usually have a nest above the gutter downspout on my front porch. After everybody leaves I usually knock them down. One year it was full of the fake easter basket grass, different colors.

Starts over a couple times, mark of a true perfectionist

You know the birds who aren’t perfectionists are single.

My bet is that it got confused by the smooth surface, look how it tries to place the first pieces of moss but it really doesn't seem to be satisfied.

Every time I brush my part husky rescue dog I leave the clumps of fur in an empty suet feeder for all the critters to use and it seems popular.

I have an ACD/corgi mix that sheds terribly - I brush her outside and the birds gather in the trees, chirping excitedly about the free housing materials. It brings me a little joy every day.

It’s a sweet gesture but if you use flea/tick medication you shouldn’t do this as it can harm the birds

If I may, an anecdotal blurt: There have been field observations that found in areas where parasites like mites and ticks are high and detrimental to the birds, the opposite might be true. Additionally it’s not uncommon practice for people to leave nesting materials for small mammals treated with Permethrin just to break tick reproductive cycle. Birds took from these too. Overall the offspring appeared to more healthy than those in greatly infested nests. Nestling anemia from bites would be a terrible way to die. Long-term side effects still need more study. I would hate a treatment based interventional approach to end up causing chromosomal damage to future generations. But losing a population of birds at once to tick born diseases is also unacceptable.
I apologize but after a rambling reply to a very valid sincere comment from a helpful person. I can’t even find the source paper that I read. DIY plans for anti mosquito-tick permethrin TP rolls for small rodent nest were popping up though. I don’t intend to sound argumentative. Seeing dying baby birds covered in mites in my own yard cut me to the core and sent me down a rabbit hole. Fighting mites in my own home was rough too and I accidentally triggered and vented.
TLDR; Parasites suck. Thanks for your time; carry on.

It's fascinating, birds actually seem to have some vague understanding of the concept of pest control.
Many city birds have been observed seeking out cigarette butts and including them in their nest, presumably for the pest-repelling properties!

I do this with my border collie mix! We have a generational nest on the side of my house, and they love his floof for their nest! I love that my good boy can help out the birds lol.

I cut my own hair and I take the clippings out in the back yard and dump them under the shrubs. I hope they get used

u/BoulderBlackRabbit 5d ago
You're unfortunately not supposed to use human hair. It's too strong and can get wrapped around bird feet and cut off circulation. :(

I love that stuff goes in and stuff goes out. Like the bird is like" this foliage will not do! It must go! It just doesn't go with the vibe I'm looking for!"

This looks like one of NestBox’s videos - they do amazing Timelapse videos of birds nesting in empty boxes like this one, placed explicitly for er…ahem….researching nesting patterns in various bird species I suppose.
Of course the content captured out of them is a veritable cornucopia of bird behaviour - saw one where a “rascal bachelor bird” hopped in to “hit on the wife” and the bird called out the husband bird which arrived in time to teach that scallywag a lesson!

The full length version of this vid has a corvid trying to break into the nest box to eat the chicks but it's too big to get in. Looks damn scary though.

Feels like it flies into the bird house, sees all the stuff, and then thinks “Oh this will be perfect for my nest”. Flies off with it and then goes “wait a second…”

u/funnystuff79 5d ago
That's a fancy bird house. Any reason they started then emptied it all out before filling it again?

Very nearby, a mammal is missing fur; I saw a video of a bird softly plucking fur off of a fluffy sleeping dog for its nest!

The more I see of nature, the more I realize just how much humans underestimate or fail to recognize non-human intelligence.

That last part looked like the malamute fuzz that mine used to generate. We'd brush them outside and when they were blowing their undercoat the piles would be large. The funny thing was seeing all the birds surrounding it, arguing over the fluff and flying away with pieces of it bigger than they were. Whenever you'd find abandoned nests there would be the fluff woven all through it.

If you want to help birds nest leave the fur you comb out of your dog on the lawn. The birds will pick it up and use it to line their nests. I haven't tried it with cat fur.

They just steal everything. Got it.

u/big_duo3674 4d ago
I mean, all animals steal everything. It's not like they have currency and a store where they can shop for nesting material

Some nice insulation or cushion filling in the end... I hate that animals are living in peoples trash

u/kittenofd00m 5d ago
Some people put out nesting materials along with bird seeds and water in the spring.
2
u/Kennyvee98 5d ago
Oh really? I didn't know such a thing existed. What substance is it?

u/NoSummer1345 5d ago
Another commenter said that when brushes her dog, she leaves the hair outside for the birds to use.

A lot of it you pick up on your own and put near feeders and waterers like natural, safe options like twigs, small sticks, dry leaves, grass stems, and fluffy seed material.
Safe and Natural Nesting Materials:
Twigs and Small Sticks: Collect these from your yard or nearby areas and pile them in a safe location for birds to access.
Dry Leaves: Rake up dry leaves and leave them in a pile or scattered around your yard. Grass Stems: Cut some grass stems and leave them in a basket or on a flat surface.
Fluffy Seed Material: Dandelion seed heads can be useful for hummingbirds and other birds. Moss: Moss can be a good source of nesting material for some bird species.
Bark: Some birds use small pieces of bark in their nests.
Feathers: While not a primary material, some birds collect feathers for lining their nests.
Materials to Avoid:
String, Twine, and Yarn: These can wrap around birds' legs and necks, causing injury or death.
Dryer Lint: Chemicals in detergents and microplastics from synthetic fabrics can be harmful to birds.
Pet Hair: Can be a choking hazard for birds.
Other tips...
Timing: Birds start nesting early in the year, so have materials available by January or February.
Refresh Supplies: Keep your nesting materials refreshed throughout the spring nesting season.
Location: Place materials in a safe location away from predators and where birds can easily access them.

I’m sorry but I have to downvote this simply because the quality is so poor I actually am not enjoying myself while watching it. I’m not sure how I can be satisfied by anything when there’s like 10 pixels on the screen. Please try to find higher quality video.
