Modern GMO bananas, that is. Originally, they had very little actual fruit and lots of big seeds

That's what genetic modification is. Read the article. They discuss in length introducing genes from other varietals, and discuss banana DNA.

People think of GMO as meaning only big companies hiring legions of scientists in white coats, but it's a broader definition than you think
