I was thinking the endgame here from the current regime is to balkanize the US between Blue and Red states.

I really don't want to be right.

That’s Putin’s wet dream right there. A fragmented United States that will turn to infighting while he helps himself to the Baltics. With the EU still being an unproven alliance he might even get away with it too.

That could backfire horribly depending on who got which military assets after the breakup. Imagine an angry blue state alliance giving Ukraine (and Poland, Finland, the Baltics, etc) nuclear tech.

It's more likely both sides get military and then burn out fighting each other, leaving only ashes (possibly radioactive ones)
