It's rural vs urban, but that's not the whole story. A NY Republican is a lot more liberal than an AK Republican. A WV Democrat is more conservative than a CA Democrat.

it's almost as if the entire political spectrum can't be pigeonholed in two parties, and any political system that results in just two viable parties is inherently unstable

I think a WV Democrat might be more conservative than a NY Republican

Really depends upon the WV Democrat. The state has some true progressives. So do places like UT, ID, and Mississippi.

There is a serious divide--even within states.

WV even has a pro-labor, anti-racism, socialist past. (back a hundred years ago--and even then it was polarized to the point of guerilla warfare)

I'm old enough to remember the state being reliably labor democrat in my adult lifetime.

Even Oklahoma had a Democratic Governor up to 2011.

I live in Rural CA and the conservatives here are absolutely not more liberal than the ones back home in TN.

Ya I'm in eastern San Diego and folks out here in the hills are pretty damn red.

I'm from western NY, there are plenty of rural NY Republicans that are just the same as my husbands side from KY.

They say that - but they still voted for Donald Trump. They're pretty fucking conservative.

That's not true at all. Rural NY can be as conservative as Wyoming

I've seen Confederate flags being flown in upstate NY.
