Trump is going to launch a trade war against California in the next few days.

Considering how much agriculture and manufacturing actually come out of California, this would have a substantial impact on the rest of the US. The California gdp is as much as in the top 5 gdp's in the world.

Right, California could secede and collapse all the red states.

Either way we’re heading to something.

The fundamental act of secession itself is illegal in that there is no mechanism for it in the constitution, and there is an imperative that the federal government maintain the union between the states (hence the actual cause of the Civil War). Part of me really wants to see the functional parts of the US take their ball and walk away, but without a legal means of doing so it would mean war which would be horrible.

Yes, but the same could be said of the US when it decided to separate itself from the UK.

The funny thing is… if a state secedes they no longer recognize the US Constitution as the law of the land and would not believe to be bound by it.

Not saying it would be easy or even peaceful.  But having no legal avenues will likely be what sparks a 2nd revolution

It could be (and was) argued that the colonists took a legalistic path when they declared independence as there were a lot of references to and citations of common law and even the magna carta I believe. Still, winning goes a long way in making something legal in hindsight.

I am just saying, that right now there is no really a legal way to ensure peaceful cessation of sane states. Also, even if there were I would think that living next to a bunch of bitter, poor, well armed, and violent US rump state is probably not a great idea for long term peace and stability.
