It’s pretty much the plot of Civil War (2024), a president who tries to steal a third term and California and Texas among others rebel

The President was already in a third term. After dismantling the FBI and other agencies

A lot of it was subtle, but if you’re paying attention you get big rewards as far as insights into how they got to that point.
