Hi all, I hope this post is ok. I’d really love to try my hand at some organic slab charcuterie boards, but I’m struggling with the best way to go about it. Should I lay out some forms and lay a slab on top? Start with a flat slab and build up with coils? Thank you for any advice!

This vase was fired inside a large bowl on the top stack. I was so nervous it wouldn’t work out but it ended up being one of my favorite pieces of the firing.

I am very new to pottery. I took a class and have now joined a local studio. I have carpal tunnel so I was searching for a softer clay that would be easy on my hands/wrists. I landed on Laguna bmix with speckle (I’ll take any recommendations for good soft clay for dinnerware).

I just picked up my pieces after a bisque firing and this is what the clay looks like. Will the speckle be more pronounce after a glaze firing?

I feel like all the hours and improvement I'm putting in to throwing is starting to appear in my pieces. So happy with these. They're actually big enough to hold a decent cup of coffee! And all my testing of the glazes I own is starting to pay off with some interesting combos/application. It's not perfect but so happy with the progess.

Glazes are Amaco Potter's Choice:

1. Ancient Jasper (on the rim/outside and poured inside) + River Rock (on the rim/outside)

2. Smokey Merlot (All over outside) + River Rock (Layered over outside and poured inside)

3. Celadon Storm (all over) + Ancient Jasper (on rim)

I'm just starting to sell my own pots, and I feel like these little areas where the glazes crawl show the nuances of the glaze I've mixed… to me they are really nice! Should I change that ?

My studio is $125 a month and I only go twice a week for 3-4 hours a session. They recently announced the fee is going to be $150, and this might finally price me out.

It got me thinking…how much is your monthly studio membership? How often do you go? Is it worth it?

In Chicago, IL. Great hours, but very busy and often limited wheel space. Have to purchase studio-clay (no outside clay). Free firing and glazes (though limited types).

Reading all these responses is great! Honestly is making me want to stay at my studio. Thanks, everyone!

Took a six week beginner’s throwing class and picked up the last of my pieces today! Looking forward to spending more time getting muddy :)

Hi everyone! I have been in the market for a wheel for my home studio for quite some time, last week I purchased a used Skutt KM-1018 and with the purchase of ventilation and the electrical work, my budget for a wheel is now pretty low. I found a used Shimpo RK-2 on FB marketplace, $500. It was manufactured in 1978. I have used more modern Shimpo Whispers, Brent, and Speedball clayboss. I know Shimpos are tanks, but is 1978 risky? Any advice would be incredibly appreciated! TIA

Mine is a surform from the hardware store. $5 and life changing for trimming off bumps and lumps before I come through with my loop tools.

I'd like to make my friends (a married couple) a matching set of something as a gift, as well as a third matching item for their dog, but I need ideas. I got them mugs recently so ideally not matching mugs. I don't think a food bowl for the dog, but open to ideas!

Hi! I am preparing a red low fire casting slip from powder (Carl Jäger Gießmasse 22/R). My problem is that it keeps gelling after 5 minutes and i have a hard time removing it from my forms.

It dries perfectly and fires fine. I tries sodium silicate and darvan 7 and 811.

I tried SG from 1.65 to 1.85.

When i measure the viscosity at 1.7 through a 4mm measuring cup i usually start at around 50 seconds and can get it down to around 20 seconds. Once at 20seconds, adding more darvan does not decrease it further.

The finished slip immediately starts gelling after i poured it and it is impossible to remove from casting forms with narrow holes.

And hints/ideas?

I think this looks really special and unique. I’m an amateur potter, can anyone tell me what is happening with this unique glazing? How do I get into this kind of style ? Thank you…

I received my cats urn and the colors are off. the orange is supposed to be brown the back of it is even worse and it just looks nothing like her. is there any way to fix this?? i’m sorry if this is the wrong place to ask i am just desperate.

Hi everyone!

I'm part of a pottery guild in southeastern BC, Canada where we aim to operate at basically break even (5 dollar drop in plus the cost of clay, drop in covers firing and equipment replacement). We recently fundraised and purchased a new Northstar Slab Roller.

We are replacing this older Bailey 1980s slab roller where you put boards in of different thicknesses to roller different slab depths.

We are looking to sell it or part ways with it.

Does anyone have any input on what it might sell for?

She’s got 3 handles, one is hidden. Glaze is made at the amazing studio I go to, her take on a cone 6 ‘shino’.
