Buying books is better because after you read them you can put them on a bookshelf to seem smart

Only if it's Blood Meridian, Infinite Jest or some 19th century Russian dude

No the worst outcome with Blood Meridian is that you read it and feel like an idiot for it not meeting your impossibly high standards and wonder if you’re subhuman for not liking it as much as Lonesome Dove.

You don't even have to read them first to do that

Strongest indicator that it’s over is a used book sale

Enjoy Middlemarch, it's my favorite!

I've said it on this sub before but it bears repeating, Library book sales are a literal cheat code for book lovers.

Also strong second on Theodore Rex, Morris is one of the few writers that can do justice to a President who was straight out of a novel ( funny enough I picked up my copy at a library sale as well ).

I go to every single one within an hour drive of me when they come up (usually hit 1-2 a month). At this rate, I’ll have a full stock of hand selected books for a home library within the next 3 years and only have spent ~$500 in total (books usually priced at $0.50-$2)

I just got back from a library book sale myself!

I got the last 3 books I needed for my Anne of Green Gables collection, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, East of Eden, and the National Audubon's field guide to seashells.

Where tf do you live? I can’t think of the last time I paid more than $2 for a used book

I recently bought Undaunted Courage after rewatching the Ken Burns doc on Lewis and Clark. It still pisses me of that the HBO show that was in production many years ago was never completed. It could've been so good.

If you read one of these you'll be more well read than 90% of this sub

I loved Undaunted Courage. Basically Lewis and Clark’s expedition was like 19th century. The best engineers and soldiers the army had to offer and tons of fucking that elevate the best catalogues. Also feels like things with the Indians could’ve worked out much better.
