Hi everyone. I'm a Jewish student who who lost family during the war and who founded a Holocaust education organization. It is only then, while researching other victims of the Holocaust, that I learned about the Porajmos and the quest for justice and recognition. Often, the Holocaust is overshadowed by other victims including Jews. I just want to say that, yes there are some Jewish organization that act like the Romani people were not part of the Genocide, but many of us do.

I went to Auschwitz with Romani students, attended festivals and am always trying to learn more. It's already heartbreaking to see that Holocaust denial is on the rise, so I can't imagine how that pain also feels for you.

My exposure first started when we aided in placing more stumbling stones for victims of the Holocaust in Italy. We placed the first stone in Italy for a Romani individual; Romano Held, in Trieste. I hope that we are more united in the future. The past does not define us but It could connect us in searching to educate and get justice. Our cultures have similarities and we both face bigotry for different reasons, none of them right. I wish you peace and I hope more Europeans wake up and treat you with dignity and respect. This is an old video recorded 13 years ago in a middle sized town in the south of Poland. His name is most likely Gabriel Gheorghiu, born on September 9, 1969 in Orșova, Romania. I was born on January 13, 1996 in Rostock, Germany, together with my twin sister. I have never met him. I only know his name, his date of birth, and that he may have lived in Germany in the 1990s. I heard he might now be living in or near Frankfurt am Main. Unfortunately, I have no photos, no contact, and no documents – just this name, the birth date, and hope. If anyone knows anything about him or his family, I would be incredibly grateful. Well, it has happened again. I said something in English that my English speaking American friends poke fun at. I was talking about soaking my “hard beans” overnight and they laughed so hard. They say dried beans. I feel like this kind of thing happens to me all the time. Anyone else relate? 😂

Is there anywhere I can learn cultural traditions as a reconnecting rom without… having anyone teach me in person? I was adopted out of the culture and am trying to learn more, but I don’t know much at all

I know to read bury me standing and am planning on buying it and reading it as soon as I can afford it but otherwise I don’t know of many sources

Not sure if this would drum up any interest, but I’m fascinated by national movements and peoples sense of self. Last time I was in Kosovo, I learned of the Balkan Egyptians and Ashkali, so this time around I visited and interviewed some of them. Sorry for the poor video quality!

From some English-language articles I found online, there was an implication that the Egyptians and the Roma weren’t on good terms with each other, but I found that they were very friendly! - only that the Egyptians identified as a separate ethnic group. Really - an amazing group of people who deserve nothing but love 🫶

I mean both of us were persecuted and in exile for insanely long time. Both of us are persecuted and we often blamed for everything. Both of us went through the holocaust etc...

I know this is an extremely general question, and my question is only for a very general, high level answer because I know everyone is different, etc. Apologies for my ignorance in this post and in general, I have never met a Romani person before.

I’m moving to a house for the first time by myself and with my partner (we are both guys in London). I’m generally very stressed about the whole move and want to make a good impression with my new neighbours. I’m not necessarily looking to become a nosy neighbour or very active (in fact opposite as I’m very shy) but I would like to start off well with new neighbours.

One of my new neighbours are a Roma family and I’ve already been introduced to one of the sons who we met when we were outside viewing the house. I do believe the family has heritage in Eastern Europe but I can’t really tell which country exactly.

I was thinking of getting some sort of goody basket or gift maybe flowers for both of my neighbours as an intro. I was wondering if there was anything specific I should do or what they might appreciate a new neighbours doing in your experience. Growing up in my family I never talked to my neighbours so I don’t have any idea what I’m doing…

Hi, so I recently undertook the project of trying to find out more of my family history and culture. I consider myself to be white, but in doing this research i found that my great grandmother(whom i was close with while she was still alive) was half romani, my grandmother remembers her describing her mother as being a "full blooded gypsy" or something this this extent. (not my words, im so sorry if its triggering)

but all ive been able to find out about this woman is that she married a Catholic Italian and settled down in Italy with my great grandma(who then immigrated to the US and had her children, my grandma there). also, apparently, HER mom was a fortune teller of sort. i know that is a stereotype, but again, this is all i could find, i apologize. when my great grandma moved to the US she tried her absolute hardest to assimilate to American culture and completely get rid of anything non-american (other than her recipes, which were americanized by my grandparents. lots of Americanization going on here lol)

i would love to know more of how to find her when i dont have a name or even a proper time period she would have been born in. all i know is she lived in italy and was roma. so, TL;DR, i want to know where i should go to find more details on Roma life/culture/food/language literally ANYTHING in relation to Italian roma specifically.

I am working on a 28mm miniature project and would like to know more about historical Romani men's clothing for some of the figures. The specific historical time farme I am curious about is pre-1800 (the further back the better). Naemly aspects of the clothing that are unique to Romani specifically and not the surrounding historical cultural clothing, I would appreciate any direction or examples.

Is the movie problematic, or a product of its time? I personally love the movie, but should I stop watching it and listening to the soundtrack? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Asking because, well, I've seen folks gripe about how Robert Downey Jr's not Romani and shouldn't be playing Dr Doom due to the character's heritage in the comics. Which is a sentiment I, as an outsider, also agree with.

But that did leave me wondering, who would be the best Romani actor to play Doom? Like, presuming Disney's blandifying fingerprints weren't rubbed all over it, the role seems like a pretty tricky balance of goofy supervillain-y ham but also genuine pathos; menace and drama, a challenge to pull off.

So, I may as well ask folks who'd know better than me, what actor would you pick?

Someone brought up a new perspective. I had a previous post where I talked about how grandparents who have roma ancestry used to say messed up things about( they would say bad stuff about the people whom they reffered to as gypsies(proper term roma)and say bad things about although they were in a small czech/polish texan town/ there were not even any roma, no one else talked bad about them, (none of the pure slavs did, only my roma mixed grandparents did to cope i guess) ironically my grandparents who were part roma talked the worst about them, after a user made a comment i realized

1. Someone with partial Roma ancestry might emphasize their "whiteness" as a way to distance themselves from a marginalized group and avoid discrimination.

2. If someone has grown up in an environment where Roma people were stigmatized, they might internalize negative stereotypes and try to "prove" they are not part of the group.

3. This is similar to how some mixed-race individuals in various societies have historically downplayed one part of their heritage to fit into the dominant culturpatwnt

I realized the same with my gf, she is part mexican, and her mother hates being called mexican she would rather cope as wanting to be called spainish, or a spainard rather than mexican( despite being more slightly more native than spainish)

I am sad becuase I know they were like this becuase they were scared :(

thank God/ the world that this is changing that know people are the opposite of being afraid to be ethnic, at least in the west, but it is spreading to minorities across the world.( it is getting more acceptable in public/social media in most places.
