Help: Emergency What on earth is going on with my shrimp?
So what is happening here? This can't be normal? I honestly don't know how to even describe it. It looks like a bacterial bloom but it looks like it's coming from this shrimp specifically?

Take a toothbrush (one you don’t care for) and try scrubbing that area a bit. You’ll know immediately if the shrimp was just kicking up the dust & clay or not.
Even if the tank has been going for a while, it’s possible nothing disturbed that spot. You’d be surprised at how much loose clay & silt can hide on dragonstone.

Yeah, I ran my tongs over it and clay popped up. Gotta love this hobby.

lol yep
I tried really hard to wash mine, sat out on my driveway with a hose for like an hour. Sometimes it felt like the whole thing was just made of the loose powder. Eventually I just said it was enough lol

I’m half asleep and read tongue… I’m awake now

Isn't that something you should do to test rocks in the geology field anyway? 😂

u/SmartAlec13 Caridina 21d ago
You can, but it isn’t always required lol.
Certain minerals will have a certain taste. Teeth can also be used to judge the grit difference between siltstone, clay stone, sandstone, etc.

Haha your shrimp was like “ooooh boy found this clay gonna kick it up and show it off”

Did you wash the stone? I had to because they’re normally extremely dirty. There are videos on YT how to do that the best. And yes believe me, they have good advices. You have no idea what amount of clay and dirt can come out of a single dragon stone 🙈

u/amazingpupil 21d ago
Not well enough, it seems! She definitely saw to that. 😂 Live and learn, right?

lol, I read that as "i ran my tongue over it and clay popped up" and I thought... that sure is a way to check if it's clay, I guess?🤣

How strange. I've never seen anything like it.

u/amazingpupil 21d ago
She may be going to town on that rock and it's breaking off? I have no idea.

I have no idea if I need to do anything to the tank, but these comments are all cracking me up

No kidding. I don't know it's it's a bloom coming from that rock? But my tank has been established for months. It's so weird.

My dragonstone filled my tank with a real fine silt, i imagine this is just buddies mouth parts and grabbers stirring it up

Dragon stone is a sedimentary rock made from hardened clay. When I bought some of recently, there was quite a bit of soft clay in the 'pores' that didn't easily wash out. Your shrimp is cleaning a spot you missed, put some extra food in for him won't ya

Hey they just got crab cuisine the other day! 😂 But I am dropping a bowl in for moving her off her blessed rock.

u/amazingpupil 21d ago

u/amazingpupil 21d ago
They cleaned out the crab cuisine and algae wafer. Now she's back there. She yearns for the mines.

They broke up a clay spot in the dragon rock. It was likely basically stone due to being dry but after time in the tank it rehydrated and was waiting to be disturbed 💕

u/amazingpupil 21d ago
And yet aquascaping was supposed to be MY hobby, not theirs 😂
1
u/PhoenixCryStudio 21d ago
I find I only provided my shrimp and fish the materials and they decide the placement 😂

u/amazingpupil 21d ago
Or how thorough I cleaned apparently 😅

I work in ceramics and you’d be surprised how water resistant super dry clay can be 💕

Shremp discovered weed, and found a way to smoke underwater. The plan is to use the cloud as cover to escape, but thankfully with it being weed, those skrimps wont be going anywhere in a short time.

yeah, she looks like she is picking at the rock, and it's releasing something in the water
google says: Dragon stone, especially when new, can release small particles into the water, causing cloudiness.
i would assume because it isn't new. This is happening because of your little construction worker.
another google search showed that in some cases, the cast off debris caused nitrites to rise slightly, so keep an eye on parameters.

u/amazingpupil 21d ago
Oooh good shout. It's pretty heavily planted, so it should be able to compensate for it. But I'll test later today.
1
u/amazingpupil 21d ago
Just ran a test (with a water sample close to where the cloud was) and 0 nitrite. So she didn't poison the well too much!

u/think_up 21d ago
Kicking up the dust. Since a lot of it may be from the rock, best to do a small water change to avoid a TDS spike.
2
u/amazingpupil 21d ago
Yeah. TDS just tested at 266, but I'm due for a top off anyway. So that should dilute it with some distilled.

It's smoking underwater...My shrimp do this often. I find my cigarettes missing when I come home from work and butts usually end up floating up to the top of the tank. I have to keep my cigarettes taped to the ceiling to prevent this from occuring.

u/Bernardo_Baraldi 21d ago
He's just ripping a fat cloud (normal behavior) you may see him drinking monster energy drinks do not worry they will grow out of that phase in maybe 3 molts
3
u/kiwizt 21d ago
Is your rock disintegrating in the water? It looks like a cloud of small suspended particles and my guess is that it's coming from the rock.
2
u/amazingpupil 21d ago
It's a dragon stone that's been in there for a couple months or so, so it may be.
2
u/Old_Butterscotch6868 21d ago
Doesn't dragon stone come with pockets of clay you're supposed to carefully clean out ? Maybe the shrimp is just scratching some clay residue and it would make this white cloud?
3
u/amazingpupil 21d ago
Yep! That's exactly what it is. I ran my tongs over that part of the rocks and it broke off. She found the spot I missed. 🙄 Oh well. Good calcium I guess?

It’s okay we best then the one time we played him in the playoffs 🫠

Dragonstone? If so, I cleaned each stone under running water in the tub and scrapped off all the clay! If possible I’d remove it from the aquarium and give it a scrub before adding it back! It can mess with your tank parameters if left dirty!
1
u/amazingpupil 19d ago
Yep! And yeah, I did but it clearly wasn't enough. And of course, I have a bunch of plants glued to it. Unfortunately, it's pretty embedded in. But I tested and my parameters and TDS are all still stable. At least it hasn't happened since then. She didn't do it before or since, so I guess her excavating days are over.

Looks like your shrimp is digging up the clay. Sediment inside of the dragon stone, when I put my dragon Stone in my tank, I used a toothpick toothbrush and a whole bunch of stuff to try and get as much of that stuff out as possible. I don't think it changes your water. Chemistry, but essentially digging it out makes the holes in the Stone look more defined. I hope that helped

he's grazing on the loose dirt/clay on that rock, it's breaking off and clouding in the water

When did shrimps take up vaping? Next thing we know, they'll be driving Subarus, calling themselves Kyle, punching the drywall, and chugging monsters.

I know Armono actually scrap things with their claws by pinching at it and use filter fans attached to the back of the claw to filter out what they scrape up and bring to mouth.

Those kinds of stones have a lot of dirt and dust that hides in the crevices, they are pretty hard to clean, i ended up taking most of mine out, but i cleaned a few of them and haven’t had an issue since
