Event / Contest Solarpunk Festival : Finale

Hello everyone, after many very hard months, and many difficult yet necessary changes, I can present to you the website of our festival : https://www.printemps2075.be

Unfortunately by lack of time and funding it is still only in french, but it has the planning of all the conferences (that will be recorded and translated) and stands, as well as an explanation for pretty much everything.
We wanted to do so many things but the reality of the situation caught to us pretty quickly, we are college students and it's our first project starting with 0 experience.

Everybody that wants to attend is more than welcome to ! April 4th and 5th at Gembloux.

If you have any questions, I'll hapilly answer in the comments.

Literature/Fiction Looking to expand my library - more book recommendations

I picked up and read Psalm from Monk and Robot, and most recently Free People's Village by Sim Kern (still reading) - I just wondered if folks had any other good recommendations to expand my knowledge / thinking in this area. Dispossessed is already on my list, and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress was also recommended to me, but my a friend who is a staunch libertarian, which isn't something I'm necessarily aligned with.

Action / DIY / Activism "Solarpunk No. 1" [UK Solarpunk activism poster]

Post image
44 Upvotes

This is a Descript AI art post, which isn't banned under the sub rules - that would be a nondescript AI art post. This means we explain it and effort was put into creating this post.

To make the art, we made use of the Raphael.app tool, which has a really cool smoke cursor effect that we're just in love with. We used the anime art style as we know how many of you are in love with the pretty backgrounds of all your favourite visual novels, and we think those sorts of backgrounds blend really well with solarpunk -w-

All the posters in our series include a QR link to our activist movement in the UK, which is all about green technocratic activism, but are posters are generally meant to reflect the eco-friendly reflection of the policies we support. We go with the motto, " 'O' wouldn't it be nice?" for all our posters as we feel it's an appealing liner for brits, who are currently suffering under austerity measures. AGAIN. (TwT)

For this particular prompt, we made use of terms like "Bosco verticale" and "green roofs of basel" to achieve the desired effect. The poster in particular is meant to show what cityscapes could look like if we turned roadspace into dedicated cycle lanes and reduced car usage, as well as invested in green city spaces.

This is part of a series of posters we create to promote our society in the UK. We hope to slowly release our posters to this reddit over the course of a couple days (abiding by the multiple post rules) but if you want to preview the posters we already have in advance and can't wait, be sure to check out our fileshare! We can't post a link, because of the rules, but you can find out more through our profile.

Research Avian conservation value of two small protected areas in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Article Abstract:

The value of small protected areas in urbanized environments for avian conservation is poorly documented, particularly in the Neotropics. We compared the composition of bird assemblages between two protected areas of limited size but specific local value, the Urban National Park of Martissant (UNPM) and the suburban Wynne Farm Ecological Reserve (WFER) in Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world, plagued with severe deforestation and environmental degradation. Species were identified along transects without distance estimation. Overall, 718 birds belonging to 38 different species were censused (494 at UNPM and 224 at WFER, from 24 to 26 species, respectively). Bird species observation included two endemic and vulnerable species, Corvus leucognaphalus and Amazona ventralis, observed only at the urban site. Species richness, diversity, evenness, and species-abundance distributions did not differ significantly between sites. However, the composition of the two avian assemblages differed significantly, with only 31.6% species in common and a significant difference in their relative abundance. We found no evidence for a difference in the degree of forest dependency between the two assemblages. However, mainly and strict insectivorous species accounted for a larger proportion of observations at WFER (34.8%) compared to UNPM (19.6%). Factors influencing the contrast in avian assemblage composition between two sites include differences in elevation and associated vegetation, difference in water availability and variation in the ability of species to adapt to the urban environment. Our results demonstrate the importance and complementarity of the two small protected areas for the conservation of avian diversity in Haiti.

I'm able to access the article PDF, if anyone would like it.

Project I'm trying to create a micronation where humans coexist with nature as much as possible starting with a artificial island

This is because most governments seem to care more about money than the people's well being so I am trying to start one that puts the people first and fix the damage. The island will start out as a boat anchored at a sea mount with coral planted. Next mangrove trees will be planted so the island grows through natural erosion and won't damage the ecosystem. The infrastructure will be designed for both people and wildlife, for example roof gardens with bridges so animals can traverse without having to cross paths. I know this will be difficult and may not be possible but better to try and fail than do nothing. what do you guys think?

Literature/Fiction Exploring solarpunk ideas (creative writing)

I've been wanting to do some creative writing, and a student I work with turned me onto the solarpunk movement this semester, and I'm hoping to bounce some ideas around with like-minded individuals!

I'm pretty new to solarpunk as an idea, but key themes seem to revolve around inspiring hope toward a sustainable relationship between humanity and nature. This reminds me of how many druids in fantasy (WoW, D&D, etc.) are protectors and guardians of Mother Nature. I think fantasy could be a good lens for exploring solarpunk ideas and themes.

But something is holding me back, and I'm having a hard time putting it into words. I guess I wonder whether fantasy would be at odds with the solarpunk vibe or not.

I'm probably overthinking this, but I figure it can't hurt to see what other people have to say. I'm open to suggestions for ideas that try to explore how solarpunk and speculative fiction can complement each other. Thanks for reading!

Ask the Sub Solarpunk and Spirituality/Community event movement? Does it exist? And what do you think: should this even be a thing?

Hey everyone! New to this space here on reddit <3

(For TLDR scroll down to last paragraph where the core question is ^^)

Over the last few years I've gradually gotten more and more entangled into Solarpunk. First by chance overhearing the term here and there, later I encountered more and more artworks, literature, etc - and finally I also started getting a lot more involved with my local communities which then actually brought the term and movement prominently to my mind.

And I have to say: I love it. The hopeful approach to even the ever-dire problems we face in this world, the literel groundedness and level-headedness, and the immense positivity and peace radiating from Solarpunk content - it is seriously such an enrichment to my life.

However, while I do notice that I often find meaningful connections with likeminded people in the spirit of Solarpunk (explicitly or implicitly), and I also love all the little self-injected trails of it in my daily life, habits and mentality....I do wonder to what extent there actually is any form of somewhat unified cultual / spiritual / "religious" movement associated with it....and also to what extent there even "should" be?

Now, don't get me wrong, I love the multicultural and open and free spirit which often comes with Solarpunk, I am not looking for anything which would be "enforced" on people to be "real Solarpunkers" or something haha. I am not even looking for any classically religious aspect such as anything of higher power to worship or so - not only due to the largely scientific influences (which not always but often goes hand in hand with significant levels of atheism), but also not to create yet another clash with existing cultures and religions; after all the mission is to unite, not divide.

But historically speaking, community rituals, traditions, etc. not only gave people peace, joy and meaning, but it really is a big part of what brought people together consistently. It gave them the feeling of being part of a bigger whole. And isn't this precisely what in an ideal Solarpunk-esque world we would have - strong, healthy communities? Communities which have a strong tie and "devotion" to each other, on the mission to pursue and celebrate common values? As such I wonder... 1) are there any such movements ongoing &/ 2) What would opinions be on starting such movement(s)?
EDIT: To clarify, while I also am interested in hearing about how existing religions, spiritual paths, etc tie in, I am particularly interested in what it would/could look like to build a sort of community around Solarpunk ideals - INCLUDING and in harmony with - all kinds of paths that people may be on :) F.ex. a collection of "Solarpunk holidays" which could be celbrated internationally and cross-culturally!

I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic and I'm looking forward to hopefully many more exchanges on this space <3

Event / Contest Solarpunks in Tacoma/Olympia, WA

Post image
19 Upvotes

My band is putting together a special event at Tacoma Arts Live on May 17th. Drop a comment if you're in Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia and I'll send you more details on what we're cooking up.

Sounds cool. What is it?

  • A multimedia acoustic performance enriched by Gulf War history & current events in Kuwait.
  • This is a “democracy in crisis” narrative centering Kuwait’s identity policing activities to reflect America’s own reality and how to prevent a disastrous future.
  • Participants will be invited to participate in the shaping of the band’s lore, in a "salon" format, which is an intellectual “think tank” or cultural gathering originating in 17th-century France during the Enlightenment.
  • Event attendees will follow fictional characters on their journey on The Silk Road. We’ll invite attendees to dig deeper into Kuwaisiana lore, which envisions a solarpunk Middle East.
