UNDERREPORTED NEWS Marta Havryshko [Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, PhD in History from the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Ukraine)]: “We need to talk about the far right in Ukraine now, not after the war.”
Article, in English:
Lviv, a city in western Ukraine, with its elegant Austro-Hungarian architecture and trendy cafes, has in recent years become a symbol of European ultranationalism. On its streets, war veterans, flags with paramilitary symbols, and merchandise celebrating controversial figures from Ukrainian history intersect. But how did this fusion between far-right extremism and the country's cultural mainstream come about? And how has the ongoing war amplified this phenomenon?
We discussed this with Marta Havryshko, a Ukrainian historian specializing in gender-based violence in conflicts and the construction of national memory. She teaches at Clark University in Massachusetts and is currently viewed as a thorn in the side by the most radical anti-Russian factions.
Azov and the Glorification of the Far Right
The Azov Battalion is one of the most debated groups in the war globally. While it has been celebrated for its resistance against the Russian invasion—especially in the grim Azovstal steelworks during the early stages of the conflict—it remains associated with supremacist symbols and intolerant ideologies, unable to envision a pluralistic cultural identity for Ukraine. Is it truly the only hope for the invaded country?
"Azov and the far right are not saving Ukraine; they are destroying it," Havryshko asserts, pleased to discuss the issue with an Italian journalist. "Their rhetoric of 'fighting to the end' is suicidal: we are witnessing a mass exodus of men who pay bribes to avoid recruitment. The lowering of the draft age and the conscription of women are policies promoted precisely by the nationalists, who have every interest in prolonging the war."
The Passivity of Progressives
"Many leftists in Ukraine today are complicit in whitewashing the far right's image," Havryshko explains. "They do not share their ideologies but believe they must align with them during an existential threat. They think it's the lesser evil. However, this strategy is failing: the far right is gaining power, social capital, and political influence, while aggressively pushing an anti-gender agenda."
This strategic alliance with the left has contributed to a narrative that minimizes the role of the far right in the conflict, particularly in the eyes of the West. "Many leftist activists, when attending international conferences, avoid addressing the issue and focus entirely on Russia's war against Ukraine. By doing so, they indirectly legitimize the far right," Havryshko continues.
This problem has forced many progressive activists to leave the country. "Those who refuse to compromise with the far right have been threatened, attacked, and some have had to emigrate for their safety."
Decolonization or Radical Nationalism?
One of the most discussed concepts in the war in Ukraine is "decolonization." Many young Ukrainians today define themselves as decolonized from Russian influence, while older generations see the Soviet past in a more nuanced way.
"After 2022, the feminist movement has adopted a strong discourse on decolonization," Havryshko recounts. "They have cut off all contact with Russian activists, even those opposed to the war. However, what's hypocritical is the silence on other colonial situations. For example, Ukrainian feminist media do not criticize Israel or illegal settlements in the West Bank. They avoid sensitive topics so as not to disturb Western funders."
This selective approach to decolonization has led to a highly nationalist historical narrative. "Many UN-funded projects celebrate Ukrainian history while deliberately excluding references to the persecution of Jews and Poles during World War II. A prime example is Mykola Mikhnovsky, an ethnonationalist ideologue now celebrated as a feminist simply because he supported women's rights within a Ukrainian state purified of ethnic minorities."
Why Talk About It Now?
Havryshko also raises the issue of selective narratives about wartime violence. "We know that Russia uses sexual violence as a weapon of war. But what is hidden are the crimes committed by Ukrainian soldiers in the Donbas since 2014—women kidnapped for sexual entertainment, forced into prostitution near the front lines, victims afraid to speak out for fear of tarnishing the army's image." According to the historian, this approach builds a "hierarchy of suffering," where certain victims are amplified for political reasons while others are silenced.
And in the background looms a harsh self-censorship mechanism: many Ukrainians avoid discussing the excesses of nationalism because it is also one of the favorite arguments of pro-Russian propagandists who justify the invasion. Silence, therefore, ensures that the heroic resistance narrative remains unquestioned and does not provide ammunition to the enemy. Havryshko, however, believes that the far right must be addressed now, not after the war, to understand where society is heading and what limits to free speech may emerge even after the conflict.
An Intellectual in the crosshairs
Due to her relentless documentation on X (formerly Twitter), the Ukrainian nationalist website Myrotvorets has listed Havryshko as an "enemy of the Ukrainian people." The accusations stem from her posts criticizing the glorification of historical figures associated with the "Banderist" movement and the Waffen-SS Galizien division. Furthermore, she has been accused of highlighting antisemitic elements among contemporary Ukrainian nationalists, including stereotypes embedded in traditional Christmas performances (Vertep).
To provide context: Myrotvorets is a controversial website believed to have ties to Ukrainian security services (SBU). In 2016, the U.S. State Department criticized it for leaking journalists' personal data, and in 2017, the UN called for an investigation into it. Many refer to the page as a "kill list," which has featured figures like Italian photographer Andrea Rocchelli, who died in Donbas in 2014 under unclear circumstances. The site ignores the presence of neo-Nazi groups, the proliferation of Nazi symbols among the military, and the sale of materials justifying Nazi crimes. Its primary aim is to target those who expose these uncomfortable realities.
But behind this censorship lies an even deeper political strategy. "The Ukrainian far right has invested enormous resources in propaganda. It has created a cult around the Third Assault Brigade, present everywhere—from bars to shops. It has hired communication experts to build a heroic image of itself. But the reality is that they do not want peace, because war is their instrument of power."
