With tariffs looming, this looks like a case of the rest of the world subsidising the US price.

u/MintberryCrunch____ 4d ago
Am in UK, we always have a higher price if you convert US price.
10
u/Flash__PuP 4d ago
Thatās because the UK price includes VAT and in the US they need to pay āsales taxā at point of purchase.
4
u/MintberryCrunch____ 4d ago
Ah right yea forgot they donāt list the final price of things, because different states have different sales tax right?
4
u/Flash__PuP 4d ago
Thatās my understanding. It shows up most on Lego when the dollar to pound price is the same before conversion.
3
u/phibber84 4d ago
And I'm only across the Irish sea where the same applies but, given the impending tariffs, I would've expected the US price to be higher than the UK and EU this time around.
2
u/MintberryCrunch____ 4d ago
I guess this is still the RRP and suppliers will have to add the tariff if they have to pay it to the US government, and then choose their price to pass that on to consumers. But I guess yea if buying from Nintendo theyāve accounted for this? Though I suppose no one really knows exactly whatās gonna happen with tariffs at moment.
I guess I meant at moment I think our price matches up āas normalā to US price. For UK Ā£395.99 to $449.99 seems to be in line with previous console releases. Havenāt seen price in ā¬ yet.

They donāt ship from the US
1
u/phibber84 2d ago
Exactly. I think they're being manufactured between China and Vietnam so shipping from there. Tariffs are being applied to both. If Nintendo has factored in tariffs to their pricing model, it looks like they've tried to spread the additional cost to US consumers internationally. This would avoid a huge price increase in the states when compared with other markets and potentially alienating a massive consumer base.
1
u/Awkward_Swimming3326 2d ago
Na most countries donāt have tariffs from those countries. That would be dumb.
1
u/phibber84 2d ago
You're right. They don't. America does. Maybe re-read what I wrote there. Or look into how tariffs work when applied by one country on multiple other countries.
1
u/Awkward_Swimming3326 2d ago
I donāt need to because I already know. We already have trade agreements with the countries where these items are produced. No changes needed.

Ā£75 for mario kart physically and Ā£67 digitally. It appears they no longer want us buying physical.

u/Cirked 4d ago
If it's a game I really want on launch (excl. merch, good ingame content) I think it's worth it - I'm thinking of Legends Z-A, or a new Animal Crossing.
Otherwise, I think I'll just wait for them to hit the shelves of CeX a few months later for Ā£20 less.9
u/IndyDude11 4d ago
This your first Nintendo console, friend? 1st party titles stay full price for years. Animal Crossing is still $60 and it's been out for five years and no longer supported with updates/DLC.
3
u/Cirked 4d ago
Yes, $60 via Nintendo directly.
CeX is a second hand tech store that currently lists it for ~$401
u/silveral999 3d ago
so after 5 years the price has gone down by a third, and you're now expecting the price to drop by 2/3rds in a few months?

Pirating it the moment it will be possible like the switch1 and the problem is gonw

u/ProfessionalKind3922 4d ago
For my Canadian friends it's 629.99 for standard and 699.99 for the bundle

u/Thememer1924 2d ago
At first I was like well Iāll be saving for a few months but then I was like, ahh screw it if I want one sooner I can just drag myself down to the states for a day trip and feel like Iām getting one for cheaper (when realistically Iām not)
1
u/ProfessionalKind3922 1d ago
I mean that's fair I've considered using my wife's statues and getting it tax free but then I'll end up playing the long game if I did that it's on native land next to a reserve it'll be sold out for a bit. I mean how it was worth the ps5 for a bit

90 Euro (97 dollars) for physical games btw

u/Banana7273 4d ago

This is some serious nintendont bullshit

u/DemRocks 4d ago
I opened up the store to see what prices were like and got very excited to see 50,000 Ā„ including MK World before seeing the footnote saying it's language locked. For an extra 20,000 Ā„ I can play in multiple languages - really worth my extra money /s

450 in the US. Preorders on the 9th. TheVerge has it. https://www.theverge.com/news/634603/nintendo-switch-2-price-release-date-details
1
u/Italophobia 4d ago
450 definitely because of tariffs :/
2
u/Decent-Half0 4d ago
Wouldn't that imply that it would be cheaper to get the European model?
1
u/Burger_Destoyer 4d ago
When you go to the checkout itāll probably add the tariffed price on.
Anyway the US equivalent is usually a bit cheaper going by recent consoles so I donāt know if itās particularly the tariffs.

u/Pizzawing1 4d ago
Just did the math, and based on conversion rate, that is actually cheaper compared to the UK price (Ā£396 = $510)ā¦ So itās not great but I guess you have to consider that as well
2
u/Cirked 4d ago
Wonder if the price is ex. VAT? America does that on most items I thought.
1
u/Flash__PuP 4d ago
Yeah, there will be āsales taxā on US systems where as the UK price āinc vatā
2
u/MintberryCrunch____ 4d ago
Itās almost always cheaper for electronics in US than UK.
Having said that if itās RRP is $450 that could then be increases if suppliers have to pay tariffs.
1
u/Pizzawing1 4d ago
I think that is true. And just for a point of comparison, it looks like the Switch 1 was Ā£280 ($364 USD) vs $300 in the US, so yeah nothing that different. So youāre right, itās not really anything special to consider - standard practice it seems
1
u/jdb1984 4d ago
Why do you get prices and the US doesn't.

2
u/swiftpotatoskin 4d ago
Probably down to the tariffs that are threatened to be imposed for Importing.

u/MrCoreyTys Waiting for Release... 4d ago

It is the same price as the PS5 or the XBOX Series X, but both of those have cheaper options available: PS5 digital, XBOX Series S.

They charging to much for a underpowered system games are overpriced and I don't think developers will make games for that ps4 type system
