$100 Billion faux-pas on the Metaverse

It just blows my mind that they have so little to show for so much money. They could have made their own gpu to rival NVidia with that investment. They could have set up soup kitchens and fed the hungry with that investment. Instead we got Lawnmower Man.

165

u/literalyfigurative Feb 21 '25

And avatars with no fucking legs.

They have enough money to lift millions out of poverty and homelessness without materially affecting themselves but instead we get surfer Zuck.

90

u/OldJames47 Feb 21 '25

To quote Dylan, "All the money you made will never buy back your soul."

-1

u/It_does_get_in Feb 22 '25

they have no souls, but then neither do you.

77

u/discussreunionmotto Feb 22 '25

Exactly. people really don't seem to understand this. We like to think so many problems "can't be solved by money." but actually, they can. Homelessness? gone. Hunger? gone. Healthcare? accessed. College? free. A single one of these billionaires could fix ALL OF THESE and NEVER EVEN NOTICE the money was gone. Am I saying that is necessarily the right way to approach these solutions? maybe not, but the fact that they could be doing SO MUCH more to help SO MANY more people and are CHOOSING not to should really be a greater insight into how much they give a single shit about anyone who isn't them.

25

u/MiserableSkill4 Feb 22 '25

That's the changing thesis on why batman is mentally ill by being batman. While Bruce does donate to social causes he devoted most of his wealth to his vigilante life which does little to stem the tide of crime. While he could fundamentally change the world with his vast wealth

3

u/readreadreadonreddit Feb 22 '25

Wait, I want to read/hear more about this. What is this thesis, this theory? Whose is it? When did this all start being a thing?

What illnesses does he have? Why/how according to diagnostic(research diagnostic) criteria?

5

u/MiserableSkill4 Feb 22 '25

I can't narrow it down to any one person but I started seeing it about 10-15 years ago. How Bruce is just as insane as his villians. Which isn't exactly hidden just portrayed in a different light. But more how he could do so much more to help Gotham with his money than by being batman

Now seems as good a time as any to remind the world of the time Elon Musk offered to solve world hunger if he could see the plan, then renigged.

Instead, he "gave" the $6B to his own foundation.

https://truthout.org/articles/musk-pledged-6b-to-solve-world-hunger-but-gave-it-to-his-own-foundation-instead/

Can you imagine? It's like dangling a twenty in front of a hungry person and insisting they show you how they'll feed themselves for $20 that day - and then not liking the answer and saying never mind.

37

u/Isekaimerican Feb 22 '25

One function of USAID is the Famine Early Warning System, which predicts famines to more efficiently stockpile and distribute food aid. Because of Elon musk and DOGE, this system is now shutdown.

Not only did he not solve world hunger, he's making it worse.

22

u/penny_whistle Feb 22 '25

renigged

That’s, uhh .. that’s reneged, there.

8

u/bone-in_donuts Feb 22 '25

I’m not sure on the journey to becoming a billionaire you aren’t completely corrupted along the way. The moves they need to make to acquire that kind of wealth hoarding have to be what compromise their humanity. Why the hell would they want to help others rather than continue helping themselves? They have big gullets to fill you know.

0

u/LordCharidarn Feb 22 '25

It sounds like we are societally obligated to incarcerate these billionaires for their own mental wellbeing and to seize their ill gotten assets to redistribute to the people and communities that they harmed

0

u/Disseminated333 Feb 22 '25

Look at Zuck and how many teen suicides and mental illness cases exist alone are on the pile of externalities he’s accrued alongside his wealth. Sure he did it legally, but we don’t have to like him. Everyone needs to delete or deactivate FB by default unless logged in. Better to delete it. Definitely keep it off your phone.

2

u/pantstoaknifefight2 Feb 22 '25

I appreciate your enthusiasm and agree with your sentiment but I believe your math is wrong.

2

u/discussreunionmotto Feb 23 '25

It's actually an area related to the field I work in and have spent years studying. Again, I'm not saying waving a money wand would necessarily be the best long term solution, I'm saying in terms of how much money they have and how many real world problems that amount could radically solve without their lifestyles changing one bit....it makes the idea that it's "unfair" to tax them more absolutely laughable.

2

u/MrLyttleG Feb 22 '25

These billionaires are not humanists, just ego-centered

32

u/Masonjaruniversity Feb 21 '25

A worse version of Lawnmower Man which is an accomplishment.

57

u/ReaderTen Feb 21 '25

They could have literally solved world hunger.

Musk boasted that if anyone could show him a plan to end hunger for $6 bn, he'd do it. So the actual charities and experts who do that put together a plan to, if not end, seriously reduce world hunger for $6 bn.

Needless to say, he went "nah just kidding" and "donated" it to a "foundation" which he runs and owns. Needless to say, it was just a tax dodge.

15

u/IAMA_Plumber-AMA Feb 22 '25

And now he's a tax DOGE.

13

u/StockMarketCasino Feb 22 '25

Just the interest alone on 100 billion is enough to solve majority of global social struggle every single year.

45

u/Unhappy-Prune-9914 Feb 21 '25

He's not exactly a set-up soup kitchens kind of guy, he buys islands, steals ideas, or buys tech and pretends he came up with it.

1

u/Melodic-Psychology62 Feb 22 '25

His wife try’s to make up for his lack of humanity!

11

u/Unhappy-Prune-9914 Feb 22 '25

Nah, she's still with him. She's ok with his bad behavior

1

u/Disseminated333 Feb 22 '25

His end game is to own all of kauaii as his “home” and probably move on to Mauii or Hawa’ii next.

24

u/Riaayo Feb 21 '25

They could have set up soup kitchens and fed the hungry with that investment.

It was said 40 billion a year could end world hunger by 2030.

Could have covered 2 and a half years of that all on their own.

13

u/NOT-GR8-BOB Feb 22 '25

I had so many people telling me the metaverse was the future. My former company sat us down for 2 hours trying to brainstorm ways to get in early. And I told them this was stupid and it would never be successful. That is was a waste of time and money. That we were better off improving our UX and building customer loyalty through good faith ideas. And they looked at me like I was a jaded crazy Luddite.

And yet we continue to treat meta, who hasnt produced shit worth talking about in over a decade like they’re tech royalty. Useless fucks all of them.

This whole industry is full of pussy fucking bed wetters who couldn’t spot a good idea if rammed itself down their throats but will fanboy at the stupidest most useless ideas for the stupidest most useless people. So sick of this shit.

2

u/Limit_Cycle8765 Feb 22 '25

Stupid Looking cartoon avatars when people want realistic avatars. People want a virtual reality to seem "real", not like they are stuck in a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

How could they possibly get this so wrong.

1

u/motoxim Feb 22 '25

Honestly just copy those vtubers design and it would be infinitely better

1

u/Disseminated333 Feb 22 '25

At this point Zuck himself is little more than a stupid avatar.

2

u/Locke_and_Load Feb 21 '25

You gimme a hundred billion dollars and I’ll crap out whatever you want while solving world hunger and curing cancer.

1

u/Supergoose1108 Feb 22 '25

It's because amassing that much wealth isn't just greed, it's a lot of luck. And because American enterprise can't be satisfied with a successful product, it must always grow, these very fortunate beings assume they will have unlimited great ideas. The myspace guy had it right, sell that shit when it's hot and fuck off on your laurels.

1

u/IOnlyWntUrTearsGypsy Feb 22 '25

Whats hilarious is Zuckerberg was knocking apple, when he’s burning billions on trash.

1

u/It_does_get_in Feb 22 '25

imo you should be more concerned with how such a company can make so much and pay so little tax in the first place.

1

u/CompMolNeuro Feb 22 '25

The tech is still early. His investment will pay off eventually.

PSA: Musk botched a penis enlargement surgery and Trump molested his daughter.

93

u/CrushTheVIX Feb 21 '25

And Trump raped his ex wife

Donald Trump’s Hair Mystery Solved: He had Scalp Reduction Surgery

Ivana’s detailed description of Donald’s rape was given during her deposition as part of the Trump’s 1990’s divorce case. In a 1993 book, Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump, the former Texas Monthly and Newsweek reporter Harry Hurt III, described a very violent, criminal scene of domestic violence.

According to Ivana’s sworn statements, her plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven Hoefflin, who had performed Donald’s waist and chin liposuction procedures, also performed his scalp reduction surgery. Hurt wrote in the Lost Tycoon that the recovery was painful and Donald suffered “nagging headaches caused by the shrinking of the scalp, and the pain of the initial incision.”

In pain, and not satisfied with the immediate coloration associated with the process, on an irate phone call, Donald told the Dr. Hoefflin, “I’m going to kill you!” He then threatened to sue the doctor, not pay for the procedure and work to destroy his practice.

Donald then unleashes his anger on Ivana for recommending the doctor. The relevant excerpt of Lost Tycoon follows:

Suddenly, according to Ivana, The Donald storms into the room. He is looking very angry, and he is cursing out loud. “Your fucking doctor has ruined me!” he screams. The Donald flings Ivana down onto the bed. Then he pins back her arms and grabs her by the hair. The part of her head he is grabbing corresponds to the spot on his head where the scalp reduction operation has been done. The Donald starts ripping out Ivana’s hair by the handful, as if he is trying to make her feel the same kind of pain that he is feeling. Ivana starts crying and screaming. The entire bed is being covered with strands of her golden locks. But The Donald is not finished. He rips off her clothes and unzips his pants. Then he jams his penis inside her for the first time in more than sixteen months. Ivana is terrified. This is not lovemaking. This is not romantic sex. It is a violent assault. She later describes what The Donald is doing to her in no uncertain terms. According to the versions she repeats to some of her closest confidantes, “He raped me.” When The Donald finally pulls out, Ivana jumps up from the bed. Then she runs upstairs to her mother’s room. She locks the door and stays there crying for the rest of the night. The next morning Ivana musters up the courage to return to the master bedroom. The Donald is there waiting for her. He leaves no doubt that he knows exactly what he did to her the night before. As she looks in horror at the ripped-out hair scattered all over the bed, he glares at her and asks with menacing casualness: “Does it hurt?

And then Ivanka was his substitute First Lady for his entire first term. How could she have lived with herself knowing he did that to her own mother!!

46

Because they don't care about people like normal humans. They only care about money and power

6

u/Faxon Feb 22 '25

We're pretty sure he did it to her as well, especially given her reaction giving a tour of the family home and seeing her old bed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6FZ5kj3FGo She's all bubbly one minute and then goes quiet for a moment and changes tone before shifting focus away from it. Total shift in feel from the start of her room tour

4

u/Thick-Tip9255 Feb 22 '25

Honestly, I don't see it. Not doubting he isn't capable of such horror, but I don't see it in her reaction. It's a bed? What is she supposed to say?

2

u/Faxon Feb 22 '25

It's what she isn't saying that's the problem. She clearly has feelings she is hiding, feelings negative enough that they can be seen visibly in her demeanor. About a bed.... Speaking as a victim of similar abuse there's only one thing that would cause that reaction. Most kids have a special attachment to their childhood bed, it's where they felt safe at night under the covers and where their parents would read them stories. You should under no circumstances have a look of terror on your face and a change in demeanor just by showing someone the place you slept as a kid, unless something horrible happened there

0

u/AsparagusDirect9 Feb 22 '25

Wow. I can completely see it. Goes to show your political bias

4

u/Thick-Tip9255 Feb 22 '25

I don't like Trump. Just because I can't see it dosen't mean I'm a facist like him. How caught up in sports team mentality about politics have you gotten if I disagree with a wild theory, I'm suddenly a trump fan? Go fuck yourself.

No one hates MySpace Tom, mark. Be like Tom and please fuck off.

-48

u/i_make_orange_rhyme Feb 21 '25

That's because MySpace isn't popular.

Name one billion dollar company that doesn't have haters

49

u/kung-fu_hippy Feb 22 '25

No, it’s because Tom took his win and left.

As far as I know, he isn’t involved in politics, he isn’t using his money to have an outsized impact on social discourse, he isn’t using his wealth to make the world worse for people who have so much less than him, or making weird offers to impregnate female celebrities.

He just made a ridiculous amount of money (half a billion dollars or so), and fucked off to Hawaii to do photography and golf. Like a normal person who finds themselves super wealthy would do. Get rich, move somewhere really nice, spend time on your hobbies.

26

u/miikro Feb 22 '25

He does pop up on occasion, and it's mostly to talk about how guys like Zuck are destroying the world.

11

u/YukariYakum0 Feb 22 '25

If I was that rich that might be the only thing people would see me do too.

-17

u/i_make_orange_rhyme Feb 22 '25

Theres nothing to hate about myspace because the brand is dead.

Tom sold myspace to pursue his real passion. Good for him. Some people enjoy their job / enjoy running their business.

Maybe marks passion IS social discourse/technology/etc

21

u/Guidogrundlechode Feb 22 '25

It’s a discussion about the person, not the brand. One bowed out gracefully while the other overstayed their welcome.

-11

u/i_make_orange_rhyme Feb 22 '25

As far as i can tell both Mark and Tom are doing what they love to do and living their best lives.

2

u/Rpanich Feb 22 '25

Mark loves being hated by the world? What a weird thing to love

20

u/kung-fu_hippy Feb 22 '25

I’m not talking about MySpace. I’m talking about Tom.

Much like this thread wasn’t about people not liking Meta. It was about them not liking Zuckerberg.

Hell, let’s take a very different example. J. k. Rowling became a billionaire through a beloved children’s book series. And she was loved pretty universally until she decided to start using her fame to broadcast her personal (and unpleasant for many) take on trans people. Harry Potter as a brand isn’t dead, people still love the books, movies, and games. But many people don’t like her anymore.

Again, because unlike Tom, she didn’t just take the win and go live her life, she decided she needed to make the world a bit meaner than it was before instead.

-6

u/i_make_orange_rhyme Feb 22 '25

Its not as deep as you think it is.

All you are saying is "I wish people would stop doing things i dont like"

Speaking of Toms, Tom hanks has enough money to retire into the sunset but instead he is uses his fame to be vocal about politics. Does that bother you? Probably not.

2

u/Rpanich Feb 22 '25

All you are saying is "I wish people would stop doing things i that harm others and weaken democracy"

Fixed that for you

It’s ok to wish that people would stop doing harmful things, you think that’s a gotcha? I wish a lot of humanities monsters would stop doing harmful things, don’t you?

0

u/i_make_orange_rhyme Feb 23 '25

"I wish people would stop doing things i that harm others and weaken democracy"

Options shouldn't be mistaken for objective truths.

You might not be the depository of knowledge and wisdom that you think you are

Someone else might wish the exact same thing yet be in direct opposition to your actions.

You can't both be right.

1

u/Rpanich Feb 23 '25

No, but all I’m pointing out is simply how stupid it is to say that people can’t wish for other people to stop doing thing when say, ted bundy existed.

Do you not wish for people like Ted bundy to stop doing things you disagree with?

You’re right, you and Ted bundy can’t both be right. Sometimes people want to kill people and sometimes its ok to want those people to stop. One of them is OBVIOUSLY right. Take a moment to figure out which one is right and support them.

Failing to stop Ted bundy and criticising people who are trying to stop him is supporting him.

Valve/Steam.

Same deal as Tom, Gabe Newell doesn’t do shitty things with his money and if anything he tries to do right by his customers.

2

u/i_make_orange_rhyme Feb 22 '25

Thats a interesting example though because...

>Gabe Newell doesn’t do shitty things with his money

....He literally spends 100million a year maintaining his 1 billion dollar fleet of superyachts lol

And just in case you thought he was satisfied...

https://luxurylaunches.com/transport/oceanco-y722.php

Lets build another EVEN BIGGER ONE.

Meanwhile steam takes 30% of the game sale price as their cut.

"As of 2024, Steam's annual gaming revenue was estimated at $10.8 billion, marking its highest earnings to date."

Seems excessive and greedy to me. What do you think? Think of how much cheaper games could be if steam didnt try so hard to monpolize the game industry to fund gabes super yachts.

http://blog.wolfire.com/2021/05/Regarding-the-Valve-class-action

" they replied that they would remove Overgrowth from Steam if I allowed it to be sold at a lower price anywhere, even from my own website without Steam keys and without Steam’s DRM. This would make it impossible for me, or any game developer, to determine whether or not Steam is earning their commission. I believe that other developers who charged lower prices on other stores have been contacted by Valve, telling them that their games will be removed from Steam if they did not raise their prices on competing stores."

Pretty disgusting if you ask me...

Is this what you call "doing right by his customers?"

3

u/Rebelius Feb 22 '25

"Boohoo people won't take the bait as I pretend this conversation is really about fashion and not fascism loving billionaires actively participating in the destruction of any system that could hold them accountable or force them to pay taxes to maintain roads, bridges, electrical grids, etc that their corporate empires and wage slave employees depend on to continue to generate their unimaginable profits"

u/KTKittentoes Feb 21 '25

With all the drugs they do, they probably aren't very edible.

9

u/Straight-Eggplant8 Feb 21 '25

True. So if we each only take one bite, we can micro dose on billionaire together.

1

u/Seralth Feb 22 '25

I rather not eat toxic food.

u/thisischemistry Feb 21 '25

He had a makeover? Still seems like a greedy robot to me.

80

u/Drolb Feb 21 '25

Well now he looks like a greedy robot who’s had some kind of cosmetic hair surgery, a really deep tanning session and mainlined some steroids

15

u/rafuzo2 Feb 22 '25

His hair is hilariously bad. It's like Bender put on a wig

11

u/nfstern Feb 22 '25

He doesn't look like he mainlined steroids to me, I think he still looks like a punk.

9

u/thisischemistry Feb 21 '25

So even more terrifying/silly then?

4

u/Noblesseux Feb 22 '25

Also he tries to dress like people he probably would have talked shit about back in college.

9

u/mambiki Feb 21 '25

He started a combat sport and it changed his physique. I don’t know why people insist on the worst possible explanation when it comes to people they dislike. As if reality doesn’t matter anymore.

I obviously don’t know if he is taking something, but I’ve been around that same combat sport long enough to know that it does increase your muscle mass drastically and makes you a lot more fit. Basically, he started his new hobby for his body wellness, which is a good thing. You don’t need steroids to look like him, he is just skinnier and more athletic, that’s all.

4

u/Zippy_Armstrong Feb 22 '25

There's this trend happening where billionaires are yearning for people to love them but they refuse to not be greedy shitheads. "Why won't people like me!? Its such a mystery! It obviously isn't my behaviour... Maybe if I get a haircut? I bet I can just change the algorithm to make them like me."

4

u/Disseminated333 Feb 22 '25

At least these people used to build libraries and parks

2

u/Mbrennt Feb 22 '25

It barely popped up in the news but there was a time a couple years ago where he was very obviously laying the groundwork to run for president as a democrat.

Which. Just imagine. Lol

10

u/SirTabetha Feb 21 '25

Yeah, and they’re dragging the public to go thru it w/ them.

2

u/AstralElement Feb 22 '25

Turns out billions of dollars can’t buy you an authentic personality.

2

u/faithisuseless Feb 22 '25

Went from Alien to Fuckboy

2

Toxic masculinity.

2

u/Lucifurnace Feb 22 '25

Lost a lot of love for T-Pain signing off on it with ZPain. Like holy shit dude, grab that bag, but have some shame for the rest of us. Ass.

2

u/Lucifer420PitaBread Feb 22 '25

The post-life one is the real shocker

2

u/bluebelt Feb 22 '25

Wait, this article wasn't published in The Onion?

2

u/namstel Feb 22 '25

He'll be building rockets next and giving the odd nazi salute. Will no one think of these poor billionaires?

2

u/Wise_Temperature9142 Feb 22 '25

I wouldn’t call it a mid life crisis. It’s just a strong attempt to be liked and relatable. He just looks like a douche now. Never thought I’d be typing these words, but I think he looked better when he looked like a lifeless robot

2

u/yearofthesponge Feb 22 '25

Well it doesn’t work when you put 💄on a 🐷

2

u/Rakhered Feb 23 '25

I get that he's a famous tech nerd, but having your mid-life crisis get outed by a literal poll is so damn funny to me

"Kevin's new Harley-Davidson doesn't make his 6th grade son's friends think he's cooler, studies show"

1

u/I-STATE-FACTS Feb 21 '25

But lets be honest, anything is better than that godawful hairdo he had forever

1

u/FewHorror1019 Feb 21 '25

Its the TRT

1

u/Emideska Feb 21 '25

A billion dollars and still not immortal

1

u/SW1T3K Feb 21 '25

Sure but before we didn’t think he cared, he’s still a douche, but now we know he cares what we think. He’s scared.

1

u/kelsobjammin Feb 21 '25

Gender affirming surgeries and procedures.

1

u/KamikazeFox_ Feb 21 '25

What makeover? He's still a douche

1

u/PeopleofYouTube Feb 21 '25

He stopped maturing when he made his first billion

1

u/intelw1zard Feb 21 '25

Zuck legit turned himself into a fuckboi

1

u/Ok_Competition1524 Feb 22 '25

It was an intentional rebrand, underneath he’s still the fucked up loser that wants to be Julius Ceasar

1

u/jackibongo Feb 22 '25

Fucking Lex Luther, Jack Harlow and Adolf Hitler all from Temu. Shits crazy. All that money and not a lick of personality or charisma between those geared up degens

1

u/Magmaster12 Feb 22 '25

Each of them is in different stages, Bill Gates is going through massive regret about his decisions with women, Bezos is trying super hard to find the perfect orgasm by humping anyone attractive, Musk is trying to destroy the planet while on a ketamine bender, and Zuckerburg is in the early stages were us men think all woman are awful.

1

u/BareNakedSole Feb 22 '25

When you are rotten through your core what do you expect?

1

u/Tazling Feb 22 '25

1

u/BagNo2988 Feb 22 '25

Not hating him like before is already a success

1

u/DreadSocialistOrwell Feb 22 '25

I thought Zuckerberg became a Puerto Rican Gigolo?

1

u/FecklessFool Feb 22 '25

he looks like he's trying to audition to be a paul brother

1

u/shitty_mcfucklestick Feb 22 '25

I would bet it’s more a case of:

  1. CEO sees his negative image as risk to his job security and the future of the company (not an unreasonable assumption / concern)

  2. Hires PR agency to analyze what people dislike about his image and strategize a plan to fix it.

  3. The plan probably included:

  4. Makeover and style consultation(s)

    • New haircut, wardrobe, contraposto / relaxed pose training (maybe with an actor or image coach, who knows.)
  5. A series of videos and I’m sure a bunch of content featuring him being super chill.

I saw the video where he was dockside chilling. It was meant to look personal, chill and casual but it was so well manicured you know there was a gigantic production behind that entire thing. The kind a big PR agency would craft, and he could certainly afford.

It was so obviously manicured that I think people could sniff it out immediately. Anyway that’s my hot take on it, who knows.

1

u/grary000 Feb 22 '25

They went from geeks to bond villains, mid life crisis just hits different for tech bros.

1

u/TheCircusSands Feb 22 '25

its not a mid life crisis. It’s much more pathetic…. https://youtu.be/ol4X6oc-tz8?si=O_MLxWl03ACW0FiK

1

u/GRoyalPrime Feb 22 '25

I kind of wish those CEOs woulf just buy an dxpensive boat or motor bike, but nit make their insecurities our problem.

1

u/namisysd Feb 22 '25

He already built a doomsday bunker, what else is he gonna do?

0

u/weltvonalex Feb 22 '25

Can't wait till he drops his wife and goes the Bezos way.

They are almost all insecure small people who got rich by being privileged and at the right time and at the right place.
