Robots that treat Superman with the sun. He played a robot called Sunny in I, Robot. What are they trying to hide from us? /s

I loved them 😂 the idea that they don't comprehend compliments or something only for the new girl bot to show emotion 😂

He's a good boy but I'll bet he probably caused the fractures and organ damage.

If I had to guess, this is after his fight with that Kaiju and it gave him a real beating. All the snippets we’ve seen so far makes it look like that thing is pretty tough.

Im guessing this is a take on All Star Superman (Of which I will not complain about..not even a Superman fan but that comic run was dope!).
-25
u/8bitmorals 3d ago
Not sure how people are going to deal with the fact that Superman is dying and he is tying loose ends.

u/In-Brightest-Day 3d ago
I'd guess that won't be the plot
-14
u/Happy_Laugh_Guy 3d ago
Not really All Star otherwise

u/In-Brightest-Day 3d ago
Yeah I mean it's not an adaptation... it's just using some elements from All Star.

I have a lot of faith in James Gunn to make a giant ensemble cast work.
I have 0 faith that the studio will not have their greasy fucking fingers all over it to try to use this as a springboard to make 20 other movies before they make 1 good one.
Please just be good.

u/In-Brightest-Day 3d ago
Good news for you, Gunn IS the studio in this case. There's no one above him except the CEO of WBD
26
u/OwnRound 3d ago
Yeah, I'm guessing DC got the shit kicked out of it enough times, while Marvel was prospering. DC must've saw a window when someone tried to cancel Gunn and Marvel abandoned him, and looks like they are putting their full weight behind him. Hoping he gets to practically be the Kevin Feige of DC except with more power and the capability to direct his own work.
After seeing "The Suicide Squad", "Peacemaker" and "Creature Commandos", I am 100% on board. Gunn absolutely fucking killed it. Superman doesn't seem like a character that would fit his style but he's earned enough trust for me to mostly shut my mouth and wait for the end product.
I think Marvel really fucked up. Even at their low points, Gunn would have been a director they could have leaned on to make a good film. In fact, they could probably use him right now with how little confidence people have in Marvel films being the cultural zeitgeist they were for a period.

u/SparkSh0wer 3d ago
The head of Disney fired James Gunn back around 2017 for something he did 15 years before. Feige worked real hard to get him his role back to do Gaurdians 3, and by that point Gunn was already working on a number of other projects. James would gladly work with Marvel Studios again, but clearly he's too busy now. Its Disneys fault, not Marvel.
14
u/DrewbieWanKenobie 3d ago
fired James Gunn back around 2017 for something he did 15 years before
To be clear, something he did 15 years ago that were just dumb edgy dark humor joke tweets, not even actually doing something bad
17
u/TheTresStateArea 3d ago
To be very clear, he was fired because he was saying some anti-trump shit and those little Gremlins combed through his Twitter history to find stuff that they could tell Disney to fire him over.
He worked for Troma for fucked sake.

u/OwnRound 3d ago
James would gladly work with Marvel Studios again, but clearly he's too busy now
Yeah that's kind of my point. He's too busy now because DC swooped in. And DC swooped in because Disney took his cancellation way too seriously.
If he never gets cancelled and Guardians 3 stays on track, maybe he's not exactly running Marvel but he's probably sticking around and making a Marvel film every few years. I mean, "The Suicide Squad" almost seemed like they tee'd it up for him. The guy that made Guardians of the Galaxy a household name wants to make more comic book films but Disney wont work with him? We have this property called "The Suicide Squad" that, on the surface, is not dissimilar to "Guardians of the Galaxy".
Its Disneys fault, not Marvel.
Fair point. I have a tendency to look at it like one homogenized ball but you are correct, it wasn't Marvel, it was Disney.

u/SlouchyGuy 3d ago
The head of Disney fired James Gunn back around 2017 for something he did 15 years before
And because he fired Toseanne like a month before, so he had to seem fair

Supposedly they greenlit Nathan Fillion's character for his own series already.

u/Canadave 3d ago
Yup, he'll be playing Guy Gardner alongside Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, which is also excellent casting. Aaron Pierre will be playing a much younger John Stewart.
3
u/Rugged_as_fuck 3d ago
Yeah, but that one might be a safer bet than the movie itself. People love him, he's endearing, and the character has very little baggage or established backstory for all but the nerdiest so they can do whatever they want with him. Based on the success of Peacemaker, it probably sold itself.

u/Ferreteria 3d ago

From the sound of it, Gunn is genuinely being trusted to run the show here. Part of the stakes around it is the unspoken idea that him retaining that control over the DCU probably hinges on this movie being successful.

1
u/LookinAtTheFjord 2d ago
Gunn is in charge of all of it and has already stated that they're making movies in the same universe that can be happening at or around the same time but they won't be as connected in the way that Marvel has been doing.

u/bel_html 3d ago
Man this one really feels heroic compared to the grit and grime we’ve been used to from DC.
6
u/alitanveer 3d ago
I still have a soft spot for Superman Returns. It got kind of darker and grittier with that fake island crap at the end, but it was the last Superman movie with some actual sunlight and hope. I'll probably make the trek out to the real IMAX two hours away for this. Haven't done that since Avatar 2 and Endgame before that.
5
u/TypewriterKey 2d ago
The first 30(ish) minutes of Superman Returns is one of my favorite superhero movies. I don't hate the rest but the first 30 minutes are peak.
2
u/One-Internal4240 2d ago
There's grit, grime, and there's also the "We're Sorry, We Forgot How a
CameraMovie Works".A lot of the new DCCU has been, like, shockingly bad. Admittedly with some brilliant points of light, like Gunn's Suicide and some of the TV shows.
1
u/bel_html 2d ago
Yea I should have said mostly in an presentation kind of way. I like the bright colors and orchestra audio, it's a nice change from dark and dirty and rock music.

I will watch this movie purely for that dog. That is doggest dog I have seen in a super hero movie!
Reminds me of our pup, who will do absolutely whatever she wants and have zero comprehension of whatever you was asking of her.

u/griffmeister 3d ago
I like it but there's one tiny thing that keeps bugging me from this and the trailer. The crater he leaves is not big enough and it's straight down instead of at an angle, it just feels off when I see it

u/whatzzart 2d ago
Yes, improperly showing us atmospheric physics and the compaction of ice has really ruined it for me. Definitely not seeing it.

But I really want to see Hawkman, too.

I feel like I'm the only one who thinks this looks terrible. Why would you introduce your superhero character by spending 5 minutes showing him spitting blood and writhing helplessly in agony, all contrasted against a goofy CGI dog?
25
u/anormalgeek 3d ago
Because nobody needs a Superman origin story. Don't even waste screen time on it.
33
u/warthog15 3d ago
The reason why they open with him hurt is because the criticism people who don't know Superman have had for so long is that he's to OP. "How can a story about Superman be interesting when he's got these god like powers."
So by literally starting the movie (the rumor I heard is this is the opening scene) showing Superman injured, it takes those people's worries and show that Superman isn't just going to wipe whoever comes his way.
As for the dog, that's just a dog being a dog. I love it

Because having no flaws and being invulnerable makes for a really boring protagonist. Also this probably isn't the absolute start of the movie. Seems like they'd start with a fight that he loses, only to have to realize that he isn't truly invulnerable, counter to what he probably thinks in the beginning.
1
u/APiousCultist 3d ago
Also sets up a threat to superman while also introducing a lighter more comic-book tone with the extended cast of superheroes and not just an original story where Superman is the only hero anyone knows about.
3
u/panda388 3d ago
It's a fucking trailer. Do you think this is the actual first five minutes of the movie? Holy shit, go rewatch The Irishman and Alto Knight so you only need to watch Robert Deniro talk to himself or other old people and nothing happens.

Goofy CGI dog? Just go away and don't come back, this movie isn't for you. That's fine. No one cares, lots of movies aren't for everyone and we don't all air that out for others because NO ONE cares.

Super dog? SM healed by robots using a giant magnifying glass? Like he coudn't just stand up and face the sun by himself? What the hell is that crap?
3
u/malapropter 2d ago
Krypto the superdog has been in the comics since the 50's.
Superman's servant robots is from All-Star Superman, a comic series by Grant Morrison that is now (fuck I'm old) 20 years old. There have been superman robots since the 60's, but the specific image of robot servants is from that comic.

Ouch... you can really tell at some parts of this clip that it is shot by the same cinematographer as The Flash.... luckily Fantastic Four seems to have actual cinematic cinematography based on the trailers alone.
-25
u/mattkward 3d ago
There is a constant vignette in the corners of all these shots and it makes the movie feel small. Weird choice.

This film doesn’t just look awful; it will single handedly kill superhero films for a long time.
James Gunn is exactly the right creative genius for Guardians of the Galaxy.
James Gunn is exactly the wrong creative genius for Superman.
His version of Superman won’t just be a bad film; as the first film for the new DCU, this film will cause the entirety of the DCU to be stillborn.
The MCU is jumping the shark with the return of RDJ as Doom; the DCU is DOA with Superman.
The current era of superhero films is officially dead.
9
u/AmaroWolfwood 3d ago
Confidently incorrect! DCU has been a series of over-budget, mishmashed writing, and forced character introduction, all coated in a heavy Dark Knight filter. It's been boring and terrible every step of the way except The Batman, the first Joker, and the first wonder woman.
Gunn is the type of change the DCU desperately needed and this is going to possibly be the start of a real golden era for DC.
MCU has been asleep at the wheel since Endgame. Unless they do something concrete with spiderman, Xmen, and get an avengers team people actually care about, and stop diluting the field with shows no one wants, DCU has the opportunity to take the lead this generation.
Superhero movies are far from done, we are just waiting for someone to get a proper long-game story line going.
6
u/APiousCultist 3d ago
SHMs also need to work out when stuff needs some deeper integration, or if every villain has to be out to destroy the multiverse times 5. Part of the MCU's failure has been trying to die everything into knots around the Disney+ content.
A direction is good, but trying to make every superhero film and piece of TV a direct tie in to the next Avengers/Justice League tentpole probably isn't helpful either.

u/Cipher-IX 3d ago
What a drama queen. Can't be any worse than Ayn Rand Superman so I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt.

Has been since Ironman 3.
10
u/anormalgeek 3d ago
Really? So the multiple billion dollar films and ~10 or so with a rotten tomatoes score of 90+ since then are "dead" to you?
From both an audience enjoyment standpoint and a financial standpoint, your opinion is dumb.
8
u/SadPenisMatinee 3d ago
The most brain dead take I've seen. You don't have to like the movie but that makes no fucking sense. Iron man 3 was made in 2013. Marvel did not even peak yet
