Right? His public speaking skills are off the charts.

I think the correct term is "weapons-grade"...

Is this a reference I should know

For those out of the loop, I was mentioning another comment on this page. Here: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/6e769o/this_guys_presentation_on_adhd_is_excellent/di8cstz/ . I instantly remembered it because the previous poster said "off the charts", which is the reply to the linked comment.

Beats per minute? You mean words per minute? Or what do you mean?

u/calsosta May 30 '17

I did mean BPM, WPM is probably double that around 120. I'm not sure this is a science but I am just tapping to an imaginary beat aligning to when he starts certain words.

Isn't that pretty arbitrary?

u/calsosta May 31 '17

I dunno. I don't think so. I might be quantizing it a bit. He obviously changes tempo often but generally it's about 60. You can Google this. I didn't just make it up.

Below is 60bpm.

Are you saying he's pacing his speech and beginning sentences generally on the down beats in 4/4 time at 60bpm?

11

u/calsosta May 30 '17

Not necessarily the beginning of sentences more that the cadence he uses causes the words and pauses line up on the beats.

He's very easy to listen to, whatever he's doing.

3

u/RunningForrests May 30 '17

Is that why he was so interesting and engaging to listen to?

3

u/Rick-Morty May 30 '17

I think he just means that his timing and delivery was very good while speaking

1

u/unique_pervert May 31 '17

but everyone knows 138 bpm is the zone where timing and delivery is best?

How can I test BPM for public speaking?

If you are asking how I did it I just pulled up

http://a.bestmetronome.com/

And tapped along with the speech.

If you are asking how to get your speech to this then I would recommend practicing speaking and having the metronome play in a single headphone or something.

I think most people don't realize how quickly they are speaking, those pauses do two things, they bring your listeners attention back and gives them a moment to think about what you just said.

The same way a wall of text is hard to read, it is hard to listen to as well.

Another way to practice is with poetry where the natural pauses are important to the poem.

Just tap along: http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm

And if you're having trouble picking up his tempo, listen to the second hand of a clock, it's very close to that.

ELI5? I don't get how to get 60 BPM speech?

1

u/calsosta May 31 '17

If you are asking how I figured it out, it's not really easy for me to explain. I just use a metronome tool with that has a "Tap" feature.

Just tap along with his speech, it's not every word, you really need to listen for the pauses to know where a "bar" ends to borrow another musical term.

To clarify my question: I don't even know what you mean by 60 BPM speech or why that would be the perfect pace.

u/Davecasa May 31 '17

I got 62 bpm but god damn he was consistent.
