Mod Announcement Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, here are some guidelines for requesting assistance

Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, the subreddit for you to ask questions and get support for issues related to Microsoft's Windows family of operating systems. Please give this a quick read before posting.

This subreddit is only for help related to Microsoft Windows and its built in software, like Edge, Store, PowerShell, and so on. Issues about 3rd party software like Chrome or Steam should be posted in their subreddits or /r/techsupport. Also, this is not a hardware subreddit, so issues like your hard drive is not detected would need to be posted in /r/techsupport. General discussions, news, artwork, and so on should be in /r/Windows, /r/Windows10 or similar subreddits. Malware/virus removal has been covered extensively in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/33evdi/suggested_reading_official_malware_removal_guide/

Posts are required to have a moderately descriptive title. Submissions with vague titles like just "help me" will be removed. You don't need to write an essay in the title, but everyone should have a rough idea what you are asking about before even clicking the link. Titles like "I'm encountering System Exception errors when launching Photos" or "20H2 update won't install" are acceptable, but the more details the better.

The body of your post should also be as detailed as possible. We are not mind readers, and nobody is going to want to play 20 questions. Help us help you, your post should include:

  • Your full Windows version, which on Windows 10 is listed in the Settings app under System -> About, it will be the OS Build number.

  • Details about your device, like the hardware specifications.

  • Any recent changes you have made, such as installing/uninstalling software or accessories. Any updates you have installed, tools you have ran, or anything else you think may be relevant.

  • Include details on your error messages and error codes, these are critical to figuring out the issue.

  • Tell us what you have already tried to fix this. Any tools you have ran, and changes you tried, and so on. I know it is a meme at this point, but seriously, reboot your computer, it often fixes things!

  • If possible, include screenshots or video. If you are including screenshots, try to use screenshot software like Snip & Sketch tool built into Windows 10, then you can upload them to a free image host like https://imgur.com to put in your post. We understand that using screenshot software isn't always an option, you can take photos with a phone or similar device, but please be sure to check to make sure everything is in focus and is legible.

This subreddit follows the same rules as /r/Windows, you can view the full rule page here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows/wiki/rules

The TL;DR of the rules is be polite, helpful, and don't encourage piracy.

Windows 11 Reset this PC didn't feel like a reset?

Upvotes

Hey everyone! 👋

I recently did a full reset on my Windows 11 laptop, but after it finished, it didn’t really feel like a true reset. Here’s what happened:

  1. I was asked if I wanted to restore a backup — which has never happened before. The last reset I did was in March 2025, and it didn’t do that.
  2. All the shortcuts for my old apps appeared on my desktop, even though the apps themselves weren’t there. I’m guessing OneDrive is responsible, but again, this didn’t happen last time.
  3. Before I even downloaded or installed anything, I noticed a .tmp file sitting in my Downloads folder — immediately after the reset. That felt off.

My reset settings were:
- Remove everything
- Clean the drive
- Local reinstall

My goal was a completely clean slate — just a fresh start for using the device again.

Computer specifications:

Edition Windows 11 Pro
Version 23H2
Installed on 09-‎04-‎2025 ( the reset that felt off )
OS build 22631.5189
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1077.0

Also:
I’d really prefer to stick to the built-in Reset this PC method — not using USBs or ISO installs.

Any insight or help from someone who’s experienced this (or knows why this behavior changed recently) would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks a lot! 😊

Windows 11 I used revo installer to uninstall omen gaming hub and everything related to it and now my microsoft store(or any apps installed with it) wont open

Upvotes

I know i fucked up, i just did a deep scan with revo installer for any files related to omen. In the process i am pretty sure i deleted some important registry files that were keeping microsoft store together. What can i do to fix this issue? I am on windows 11. Heres what i have tried and failed with:

  1. Attempted to reinstall Microsoft Store using PowerShell (Add-AppxPackage command), but ran into error 0x80073D02 (app in use).

I tried stopping wsappx(the process likely causing this error) in task manager but it opens itself right back up

  1. I also reinstalled windows(keeping pre existing files and stuff) and it didnt do anything either

  2. I ran dism and system file checker commands in command prompt as well. They didnt seem to help much

Windows 11 Start Menu does not open after installing Vivetool

Upvotes

I followed the instructions according to this website https://itstechbased.com/how-to-enable-the-new-start-menu-in-windows-11-26120-3671-and-26200-5518/ to get the new start menu, and restarted (and updated) my computer. After the restart, however, the start menu does not open, even after restarting my device and restarting explorer.exe. Anyone know how to fix the start menu or safely uninstall vivetools so that the old start menu will come back? Thank you.

Additional notes:

  • Keyboard shortcuts requiring the Windows key still work.
  • When clicking Windows, the current active window 'goes out of focus'.
  • IMPORTANT: It appears that the start menu is just not appearing, as when I press the Windows key and type Chrome and then enter, although there is no start menu Chrome does open up.

Windows 11 Are those archives of classic Notepad app legit?

Well, I tried Windows 11 notepad. First problem: invasive autocorrect. I had to disable ALL the correction, because I'm pretty sure it sometimes used to able automatic function itself. Okay... Until after some update Copilot also came back by itself. Other problem is zoom. If you click "x" at the window it doesn't really close the archives, but it never remembers the zoom. If you came back to edit something you expect consistency. So please, forget it... I just want a text editor that record exact what I type.

I found these archives:
https://archive.org/details/notepad_202402
1) Is that legit?
2) Do this work in Windows 11?
3) Is there a better option at all?
4) Is there an official option to restore classic Notepad?
5) That regedit way is currently working in Windows 11?

Windows 11 Windows 11: Left-click drag selection box is black outline instead of blue – how to fix?

Post image

When I left-click and drag to select files/icons, the selection box has a black outline instead of the normal transparent blue fill. This happens everywhere—Desktop, File Explorer, etc.

Windows 11 PC booting to BIOS and won’t exit BIOS

A few days ago, my PC (Windows 11) started working weirdly, as in my mouse and the screen would refresh normally, but anything I hovered my mouse over or clicked on would take 2+ minutes to react to the click. This happened a few times before I restarted it one day, then I was stuck in the Lock Screen. It would take upwards of 2 minutes to even get past the screen with the time, and I couldn’t shut it down by manually pressing the off button on my PC. I tried pressing the shut down option on the password screen, but it would take too long, and wouldn’t end up working.

Although I knew it was a bad idea, I shut it off from the power switch to turn it off, then when I turned it back on, my screen became a loading screen that said something about repairing disk errors. It finished, sent me back to the Lock Screen and I turned it off for the night. I then turned it back on today, now it only boots to the BIOS. I’ve tried changing the voltage to my CPU, since I recently increased it due to recent blue screens, which partially fixed them, but that didn’t work. I tried resetting all settings, which again didn’t work. Anytime I turned it off and on again, it would boot to BIOS, and when I saved and exited, it would send me back to the motherboard loading screen, then back to the BIOS. I don’t know if my windows is corrupted, or whether I’ll need to install windows again. Does anyone know how to fix this?

If I need to provide anymore info about my specs, I can provide that.

I've had the recommendations setting turned off, and it still is, but today I started getting recommended apps in the Start Menu, and I couldn't get it to stop. I tried turning the setting on and off again, restarting, and disabling app recommendations in Group Policy Editor; none of which has worked so far.

Windows 10 PC keeps randomly shutting off?

Hey guys,

Recently, my PC‘s been randomly shutting off with a click noise, and restarting with no error screen.

I tried running the windows memory check, I ran the system file checker (both with no issues), and I even replaced the thermal paste. Never had this issue before.

The cpu (Ryzen 5 5600) is idling an an average of about 45C, and the gpu (RTX 2060), idles at an average of about 36C.

I ran VR on it with no problems, same with ray traced games. However, I’ve noticed the problem occurs when the PC is idle.

Any ideas what may be causing this? Could it be a physical problem? It may be worth noting it did travel on a plane, so it may possibly be scratched up or something (but I sure hope not)

Any ideas/advice is appreciated,

Thanks in advance!

Windows 11 Quite strange problem with my new USB connected card reader/usb hub

Hi there,
I've got this https://www.amazon.de/-/en/dp/B08GSK1YVD?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title for my PC. I connected the cables, and everything works as expected. The speed is quite stable roughly 80MB/s, I can't complain.

But there is a thing, when I finish copying the files, the system become unresponsive. For instance, I have to wait more than a minute or two to rename the folder I copied.

I decided to reboot the system and noticed that when logged in again, a pop-up showed which says "your USB device is not working correctly" something like this.

What could be the reason? I haven't installed any drivers, it simply works. I even checked the site of the vendor, and there is no drivers for that device. Here is my version of the Windows:

Device name WIN11 Full device name WIN11.home.lan Processor 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700KF 3.60 GHz Installed RAM 64.0 GB (63.8 GB usable) Device ID E5745025-E3B7-4BC2-8A6C-EE53FCC9833D Product ID 00330-80000-00000-AA123 System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

Sorry for the generic explanation, but I'm not an Windows expert.
If you need more detailed info, please ask.

Thanks

Windows 10 I have dual boot with Windows 10 in SSD and HD. Is it possible to transfer boot partition from HD to SSD?

I had Windows 10 on an old HD, disk 0 - drive D. After I installed Windows 10 (19045.5608) on a new SSD, disk 1 - drive C, I realized that the boot partition was on the HD. Is it possible to resize and transfer the boot partition from the HD to the SSD without losing the SSD data?

Windows 10 Windows 10 can't log into account

I'm trying to log into my pc, but instead of just letting me input my pin, it shows a sign In button instead. When clicking it, it shows a Microsoft login page, like the login.live one. And inside the email box is some jarbled mess that's both of my emails combined. When correcting the email and entering my password, it pops up with the message "something went wrong, try again, or select cancel to set up your device later," the one time i got past it it then asked me to set up a pin, but it failed when i tried, it then sent me back to the login screen and the cycle continued. Im not sure what to do. I have a second account and I can log into it just fine.

Windows 11 Something keeps taking my storage

Hi, Yesterday night I noticed something weird happening to my PC. I have around 190gb left and whenever I turn the WiFi on something is taking it very fast. Making my storage drop down to 189gb, 188gb, without stopping. If I turn my WiFi off and reset my PC it goes back to 190gb storage left. I checked task manager and nothing unusual opens. And I don't recall downloading anything this might have been malware or such. Anyone knows what's up?

Windows 11 Pc with hard drive as external drive

Alright guys so a week ago i was asking about partitioning trouble but I sorted it out and I want to take a backup of my drive before ruining something. The ssd on my laptop I'm trying to partition is m.2 but I have another computer with an extra hard drive I could back it up to. The problem is that computer has no m.2 slot.

I have 3 options 1. Get a sata to usb cable 2. Get a m.2 expansion for pcie 3. This is a question and the main topic, can I connect my laptop to the pc with the hard drive and have it recognize the whole pc including the drive as an external drive (lemme know if that's possible also the pc with hard drive is running manjaro but the main laptop with the ssd has windows 11)

Windows 11 I want to remap the annoying copilot key with the right ctrl key but this shows up

Post image
5 Upvotes

Also, when I think I've done it using PowerToys, the remap to rctrl from there is not the rctrl key input but a combination of many keys, like a shortcut, I even tested online for key input checking and it doesn't register it as an rctrl key but many keys pressed together. Does anyone know how to actually remap it without these annoying "windows" issues

Windows 10 I've tried everything, but I can't install NVIDIA driver on Windows 10 anymore.

I have a Geforce Gtx 1050 Ti running on a laptop (Windows 10/22H2/19045.5679, 16GB RAM, i7 7th gen). Last week I tried to run TensorFlow on my local machine, and I got the error "tensorflow.python.framework.errors_impl.InternalError: cudaGetDevice() failed. Status: CUDA driver version is insufficient for CUDA runtime version". I searched for this error on Google and found that it was probably due to my NVIDIA driver not being updated. It was on version 511. So I downloaded the latest version (572.83) of the driver from the NVIDIA website. I also tried to update the driver through NVIDIA APP. But either way, I got the following error in the print (sorry, the installer language is in Portuguese as it is my mother tongue).

In short, I always find the error "NVIDIA installer failed". When I tried to update it through Device Manager, I got the error "Not enough memory resources are available to process this command". So I tried to follow the instructions of this tutorial (link to NVIDIA support page) to enable the installation logs. And I noticed that the log also ends with "Setting environment variable 0095CF10 as not enough free space for extracting" and "Setting environment variable 0095D118 as insufficient physical memory. Extracting may take a long time.". But I have more than 250GB available on my HDD.

So I tried to run Windows Update and the cmd commands 'sfc /scannow' and 'Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth'. I even tried to scan and repair any damage to my HDD with 'chkdsk /f /r'. But nothing solved my problem. So, as a last resource, I used DDU to completely uninstall the old driver (apparently it is something recommended by many people online). But even so, I had no success. I can't take it anymore, I've been trying to solve this for almost a week now. All help will be most welcome. Thanks!

Windows 11 Internet Issues after going to windows 11 (24h2)

I have Fiber internet that is rock solid my ping ranges from 8-9ms and it has been like that for years. After going to windows 11 my ping is now consistently 20ms (I wont include the mountain of other issues that 11 has in this). After hours of troubleshooting I gave up and reverted back to windows 10. The only problem is that I am still having the ping issue even after reverting back. The speeds are not effected at all just the ping. (all drivers were reinstalled after the change to 11 and after reverting back)

Hi, I was watching youtube when a blue screen popped up it says something about restart and a percentage thing, I forgot. Now its been 2 hours since its in preparing automatic. What should I do? I tried force shutdowns, getting into the bootloader. Should I check if the Hard drive is loose? I just got it from repair. When I got it was at 100% disk, did some tweaks I found on youtube that says about disabling the sysmain

Windows 11 Windows 11 Backup (from Control Panel) taking forever with bursty file transfer behavior

Post image
1 Upvotes

Howdy! I am currently backing up my PC (Windows 11, OS build 26100.3476) to an SMB share on my network, using the Backup feature in Control Panel, and it is taking forever. It's been over 12 hours, and only about 400 gigabytes have been copied. I can't find any signs as to why, other than my network adapter is sending data in bursts only (screenshot attached). I verified copying files from my PC to another folder in the same SMB share directory can saturate the 2.5gigabit ports on my PC and NAS, but for some reason Windows Backup refuses to transfer continuously. My CPU (12600k) is sitting at <10% usage, ram is nowhere near maxed out, and the NVME drives (Samsung 970evoplus) are also showing <5% usage. Is this expected behavior? Is there anything else I should check? Or do I just have to bite the bullet and wait for it to finish?
