A mix of supernatural/heritage. My uncle was a hoarder before he died and now I have all of his souls he obtained through his old contacts.

So I was at the tavern, having a drink and potato after a long day at work. I stepped outside for a smoke. This guy with food in his beard says he’ll show me a trick if I give him a ciggie. Long story short, now I can cast a level 5 fire bolt.

For me alchemy is more like cooking.
Sometimes you dont wanna follow the recipe, and experimenting can yield good results
Now learning with a tome on the other hand is like baking.
You absolutely follow the fucking recipe to the greatest extent or everything will be fucked beyond recognition in a second

u/batboy11227 Odias, Cloaked Alchemist 12d ago
Exactly, if you just start throwing random stuff in the vials something will happen, if you make random gestures and words nothing happens or you summon an old god

I like your list. I think you should look into relics. They are the body parts or personal effects of those that once held power. An easy example would be armor made from superman's skin. A classic example would be the tomb of a Greek hero protecting a city. An inhuman example might be the bones of a bear being forged into a sword to give its user strength. Maybe the power one possessed in life seeped into their belongings or onto the weapon that killed them. A spear that slayed a God might have just been a spear before, but now it's something more. The robes of a great healer have started to radiate health on their own. The underwear I wore when I scored the winning goal have become lucky.

u/WatcherDiesForever Dalius, Sapient Dungeon Core 12d ago
I believe the closest approximation would lie between Artifact and Alien. I am a member of a group which could be called a species, in a sense. But, I also function in ways that are most common to items rather than entities. I could explain in full, but that would violate directives of Law which I cannot tresspass.

u/BankTypical Necromantress Nerverra 💀 12d ago
/UW/
Hi, Neverra's writer here! 😄The world in my loreposts has a system that's kind of a mix between 'supernatural' and 'training', I guess.
Long story short... Someone in their world kind of needs a patron deity to worship for their soul to not slowly and painfully fade away into the void upon death (I just wanted to give the in-universe deity SOME kind of function beyond just being set dressing, lol). But a mage in her world would still have to learn new spells and hone their craft in order to grow more powerful. Like, I just wanted things to look GRIM for Neverra at the start of her necromancer career, lol; she needed SOME kind of pressure to basically go from Cleric to Necromancer here.
I'm not sure, but I might just toss in some cool magical artifact kinda shit in later posts as well, just for the lolz here. I'd have to come up with some cool effects for an item (apart from your usual magic times and soul-related shenanigans), but might be a fun topic to creatively research.
/UW END/

"The void is of supernatural origin, and it could technically be a 'heritage' thing since it can be passed down, except I'm the first to have it.. The rest of my power is all natural, enhanced with training."
"Oh, the mind-reading, telepathy, that stuff, a combo of heritage and training. Just genes."

u/Vyctorill Necromancer 12d ago
Technically speaking all of them, except for the heritage one. Magic is training, a collaborative discipline with contributions from countless people, and also a science. Plus everyone uses tools to surpass their limitations.
Also if you were born with your powers you’re nothing more than a nepo baby. Learn to function without the silver spoon born in your mouths

Mine’s a mix of supernatural, training, heritage, and scientific. My grandfather was a great hero of what is now my home dimension, and was part of a top secret government project to help Earth make extra dimensional alliances. He had his DNA modified so that his offspring would be more naturally talented at using magic, both the more substance-based elemental magic, and harnessing dimensional energy to use the more energy-based “arcane” magic, as we call it. My family was born with elemental magic pre-learned, hydromancy and botanomancy for me, and I’ve proven skilled at using arcane magic, especially after becoming the avatar of the moon goddess. That’s not to say I haven’t been training hard all my life

A little bit of everything, except the supernatural. Because the supernatural doesn't exist. It's just superstitious mixtures of other types that simply can't be explained properly.
Enlightenment Science is an actual way of life to explain all secrets of the universe.

I suppose heritage and training. I was born and raised by barbarians, but they still taught me some witch things, because mom was spiritual in religion. I stuck to the witchcraft more than the rest of my family.
I can still wreck someoneeshit with my fists tho. Potions and magic are cool and handy, but I don't NEED them to be a danger to society.

Well, considerin' the darkness that came welling up from under mah property axed me fer my help in exchange fer Eldritch power, ah'm gonna say "supernatural". And also mah grandpappy taught me how ta bind them eternal horrors to mah will, I gotta say "training".
But, since I also have pallets of ammo and dynamite and lotsa guns, ah'm inclined ta say "science", too.
Edit: for clarity.

My Dad taught me the basics before he died, then for 5 years I studied on my own, I got better because another Mage I met picked up where my Dad left off, then before I knew it I was making Swords appear out of thin air, before finally I made a pact with the physical embodiment of the Collective Will of Humanity
Also I think my Soul has an impact on what magic I can and can’t do
Also also I think I met myself from the future, and he gave me some really good advice before I finally figured out how to actually use my magic properly

That's the problem with space/time magic? I'm pretty sure it's a self-sustaining loop, but I'm missing enough details about it that there's still room for surprises. Like...my life might be a Mobius strip on top of being a loop?
I guess we'll have to see/are currently seeing/have already seen.

u/Beterrrr 12d ago
Satan took gods power in the rapture and redistributed it to all life, scaling with desire, squirrels can have super strong powers if they need to defend their family, as long as their desire is geniune! A person who has to defend humanity even if they have no desire would be pretty weak even if their power is usually strong!
Some may never awaken to it if they never want anything enough, they can serve guardians and gain a portion of the power of the guardians: beings who've accepted the role of a protector over a given land, and their ability grows to modify the terriority and its inhabitants to grant them the ability to defend themselves, each individual under a guardian are usually those with no conviction outside of a shared desire to protect the territory! Any who serve under a guardian can tap into a collective reserve as long as they have the desire to hold it!
(Thought this was the worldbuilding sub mb but here it is)

Alien I guess from the transdimensional side of things. Long story really and it's got some twists and turns that I'm still working through, beginning a thousand or so years ago as Camazotz, Mayan God of Death, Blood and Bats, as ya do. Gave up Godhood for a mundane existence, died and went to that place nightmares come from and had to reform my core out of the unrelenting thunderstorm and possess a physical body to stay anchored to life, found forbidden knowledge as ya do and stepped through dimensions to this place. I like it here, the weather's nice. But I'm rambling again, either alien origin or supernatural, or a curse of some sort, not quite sure.
Thanks for pulling up a chair to listen if you did. I don't get a chance to reminisce much.

u/TheThoughtmaker Ray of Delthorensdale, Transmuter-Artificer 12d ago
Yes.
Thanks to bioengineering and/or radioactive mutations in my ancestors (the pre-war records are long lost), my lineage is born with some magic. Then I learned more through training, awakened latent abilities with a ritual, and was granted a powerful artifact by a benefactor from another world. Nowadays, I craft various magic items and constructs, often with that gift as a catalyst.
Embrace embrace advantage.

Mine hath started as heritage, as I am one of thee last of the skeleton race of supernatural creatures. Although now it has transformed from my usage of it to include more of your list of froms.
I have heritage from my bloodline,
I have science from my studys and biological exploring,
I have training from practicing and sharpening my powers,
I have supernatural from where I draw my magic from nowadays,
And though I don't do much tech, I do have some knowledge within that field from my travels.

Training because I had to work to not give myself cancer every time I used my new innate magic.

Heritage.
Every man in the Trevithick line inherits some manner of power. Father is a bureaumancer, and my brothers are a seer, pictomancer, three bards, and a spell blade. My cousin, Thomas, is going to be a decent musclemancer. I think Grandfather is an illusionist, but I have never had the nerve to ask.
And training, obviously.
