The dogs at Apple Valley Animal Shelter need your voices tonight! Earlier today, April 9th, the shelter announced they had a confirmed case of canine distemper and were halting all intakes, adoptions, and rescue pulls for the next 10-14 days. No dogs in, no dogs out… for the next 10 to 14 days.Then, they proceeded to unlist these 13 sweet souls.
There are so many questions:
What is the plan for the pets currently in the facility’s custody that are unavailable for adoption for the next 10-14 days? Will these pets be available to rescues? Will they be monitored for symptoms over the next 10-14 days, and offered to rescues with a medical waiver if they show signs of illness? Will all dogs have access to proper veterinary care during this period?
Since intake is closed, will the dogs currently pending euthanasia be relisted and available at the end of the quarantine period? What happened to the dogs from yesterday‘s euthanasia list? Are the dogs that were unlisted this afternoon after closing already dead too? What is the plan for county dogs and town stays that would otherwise come to AVAS? Are they going to be euthanized upon arrival? Diverted to another facility?

Apple Valley identifies positive canine distemper case Apple Valley, CA – April 9, 2025: The Town of Apple Valley Animal Services Department is seeing several dogs coming into the shelter with Canine Distemper Disease. “This disease has a tendency to ebb and flow in our local community,” said the Animal Services manager Adriana Atteberry. Unfortunately, there is no cure for distemper, however, owners can easily protect their animals by making an appointment with their local veterinarian office.” Shelter staff are encouraging residents to check on the vaccine status of their animals and get their pets vaccinated. The Apple Valley Animal Shelter provides vaccines for shelter animals but cannot give vaccines to household pets. Owners are highly encouraged to contact their local veterinarian office for these preventable diseases like distemper and parvo. Distemper can be difficult to identify in its early stages as it can resemble a common cold or cough in dogs. These respiratory symptoms can develop into more serious conditions and euth if the animals are unvaccinated. “This disease is simple to prevent,” said Atteberry. “We are seeing a rise in cases within our community, and it is affecting the animals that are in our care at the shelter. Getting your animals properly vaccinated can save their life and help save the lives of others.”“AVAS will continue to follow all recommendations from our Supervising Veterinarian to prevent the spread of the disease” Effective April 9, 2025, no canine adoptions will take place, and no new canines will enter the facility for 10-14 days minimum.
