Log splitter? Not until I’m 50
 in  r/homestead  16h ago

I'm right there with you. My shoulder tear happened at 38. It sucks.

Log splitter? Not until I’m 50

I said similar things.

And then, at 38, I shredded my left shoulder splitting logs with an axe. No I feel like I'm fucked for the rest of my life.

Long story short - log splitters are the way to go.

Same thing happens to me now. I took my condo off the market in November and I'm still hanging up on these assholes and April begins tomorrow.

Submarine history is such a badass form of history! I'm super proud to say I made it a career. Thanks for this post, I love things like this!

Old time Sourdough Pancakes

Sourdough discard pancakes are the best! Homesteading has totally ruined any form of breakfast that doesn't come from my kitchen.

Anyone here know the gender of my ducks?
 in  r/homestead  10d ago

We have pekins as well. Our tractor supply ducklings from last year all turned out to be girls (lucky us!) We have a boy, but he is a Blue Swedish, and he establishes his dominance multiple times a day.

How old are they? I would argue the curled tail feather of a drake doesn't really begin to show up until around 5-6 months.

We successfully sell their eggs consistently in our community. It turns out that a lot of people are allergic to chicken eggs and are looking for affordable, backyard raised, duck eggs. They sell better than our chicken eggs and I'm always shocked with that statement.

Based on those things, we now have five new Pekin ducklings. Hoping for all females, but if one turns out to be a drake, then maybe we can successfully hatch our own next spring.

Good luck!

What is the one thing they didn't tell you about being a submariner?
 in  r/submarines  11d ago

We had an a ganger blow sans inboard twice on one deployment. Fuck that guy. And fuck that command for being too fucking scared to hold that dumbass accountable.

Best Breweries all over Maine

When we go on our summer trips into the north, we always stop at Maine Beer Co. Really good food, decent prices, delicious beer. Their building is also great.

It's not the best, but the location is pretty nice. York Beach Brewery.

What are the best first things to buy for the homestead in your opinion.
 in  r/homestead  19d ago

In my opinion, you can't go wrong with a chainsaw as long as you do the maintenance on it. I am completely fresh to homestead life over the past five years, but I now clean my own carb and also sharpen my own chains. It isn't tough to do, you just have to learn how to do it. Separate to that, a cordless tool set is a game changer. It lets you conduct your own maintenance, upkeep and upgrades. Food independence: Chickens and a fenced garden. We used our cordless tools to build our chicken coop (using shed plans) and run. The money we saved in labor definitely paid for the cordless tools and a portion (if not all) of the lumber.

Buying Land in a 1% Flood Zone—Homesteader's Dream or Nightmare?
 in  r/homestead  19d ago

Is all of the land inside the flood zone you are referring to? When I bought my property, including the house and shed on it, the lender (at the final hour... Maybe a full week prior to closing) was making flood insurance mandatory even though only about a 2' x 2.5' section of our shed was inside the flood boundary. The rest of the shed, house, and driveway were all located outside the boundary. The lender came to their senses and removed the requirement. Since closing, the flood boundaries have been redrawn by whatever government entity controls it (FEMA, I think?), and the shed is no longer inside the boundary. A significant amount of our acreage is still inside the boundary, but we live along a creek/brook, so that makes sense. I guess what I am trying to say is: If you can build outside that flood boundary, it could be worth it.

Will I freeze to death?

Yeah, it's ridiculous. It's really difficult for the average income person to make it in Maine. It's truly unfortunate.

I'm right there with you... It's hard and it's incredibly frustrating. My thing is a different background, but similar situation. For me, I'm really wondering if I should have stuck out the military for another 3-4 years. I wish you nothing but good luck moving forward.
