Tank smells like pure unfettered ass
 in  r/Aquariums  Dec 31 '24

The anerobic sand that others have mentioned is a good starting place. But another idea is blue-green algae aka cyanobacteria.

You mentioned bacterial blooms, what kind of bacterial blooms are you having? is it foggy milky water or Is it a blue green slime that coats the surface of things? if its the slime then its likely Cyanobacteria which has a pretty unpleasant smell and can be a problem in planted aquariums that don't have enough nitrates and the aquarium you describe sounds like it could be nutrient starved.

Is it okay to have poop build up in the gravel?
 in  r/Aquariums  Dec 31 '24

At that point it's commonly called mulm. Your plants seem to be loving it. There are really only two problems it can cause.

1) It looks like a bunch of poop in your gravel. If that bothers you you can gravel vac the gravel right next to your glass and plant (They have very robust root system a little disturbance won't hurt them)

2) Mulm is a source of nitrates and other plant nutrients. This isn't a problem so long as your plant growth can keep up and use the nitrates. But overtime too much accumulation of mulm can release more nitrates than your plants can uptake. This will cause nitrates to accumulate in the water which is bad for your fish.

You can get a nitrate test kit and track the nitrates is in your water. If you ever see them begin to get over 20ppm (20mg/l) then you should do a deep clean and remove as much mulm as you can.

Additional comment, While the color in your water is perfectly safe and mildy beneficial for your fish if you ever want to clear it up you can put a pouch of purigen in your filter which will chemically bind all of the organic molecules staining your water brown. Purely an aesthetic thing.

Are all stands just junk? Why are the weight capacities so low?
 in  r/Aquariums  Dec 30 '24

Does your area have an aquarium group on Facebook? You could try reaching out and seeing if anyone around you could build you a stand. I just build a guy a custom stand for his 125gallon for $300 he saved some money, I made a tidy profit and the stand could support a couple tons easily.

You'll have to get your animals up past lvl 50 or so before you start really seeing competition. Seems a lot of folks out there are just bot farming. But yeah, pvp is very unfulfilling over all. I bet you could get this team to lvl 100 without losing a match.

It seems your teams major vulnerability is big damage (things that can one shot you) or stuns on your crypt wing. I also like cryptwing as he as soo much utility but I like to pair him with either angel+alpaca (longer lasting heal/cleanse than cryptwing, can make itself untouchable, and can apply damage effect) and/or samuri+blackhole (does damage equal to about half of his total HP and gives allies reflect which makes big problems for people). Another fun one is medusa+psychic power she is just pure shenanigans. I also like polar bear+unicorn but sounds like it does the same as your cheetah+fox

cryptwing is dragon and mummy. Dragon + black hole is a 15 star pos.

Wyoming Freedom Caucus unveils ambitious ‘Five and Dime Plan’

I feel this is a good time to point out. The majority of Wyoming's legislative seats are unopposed in the general election. If you live in WY and you're not voting in the R' primaries, then you likely have no say in this level of state politics.

Do with this information what you will.

DIY polycarbonate lids are sharper than the guillotines of the Revolution. Is there an aquarium safe tape or lining I can cover these edges with?
 in  r/Aquariums  Dec 23 '24

you should spend a couple bucks and buy some acrylic stick on piano hinges and a cheap stick on drawer pull/handle. Then you won't have to touch the edges.

Also, you can run a flame along the sharp parts to get rid of sharp spots.

Bettas in a shop. "Its to show they can live without oxygen"
 in  r/Aquariums  Dec 13 '24

Kinda depends on how you want to look at it. If you're looking at it from a taxonomic perspective then gills are irrelevant. Organisms cannot evolve their way out of a clad. I.e. if something is descended from fish then it's a fish. This is the reason why folks are always getting all uppity about birds being dinosaurs

But if you aren't a pedantic a-hole like myself a morphological definition s a lot more useful. It would be something like "a fish is a vertebrae with internal gills" (that way you exclude thing like axolotls and snails).

It's super fun to call dolphins, and sea lions, and T.rex fish and be correct. But it's not particularly useful where people are trying to talk about fish.

Bettas in a shop. "Its to show they can live without oxygen"
 in  r/Aquariums  Dec 12 '24

What a silly nonsensical statement. Yes, betta fish (like most anabantiformes) have a labyrinth organ which allows them to extract oxygen directly from the air. But they are only facultative air breathers and they still have perfectly functional gills that are able to extract O2 from the water just fine.

Heck even obligate air-breathing fish such are the arapaima still have functioning gills that can extract O2 from water. In the case of the arapaima, their gills just aren't big enough to support their body mass so the have to supplement with air breathing. I can't think of a single fish that isn't able to extract at least some O2 from water.

Additionally, dissolved oxygen is a very small part of water quality. Air breathing is an extremely flaccid excuse to justify animal abuse.

And to be fair, I'm only say that this is what electricity looks like in a fish, so best to rule that out.

Are these orcas?
 in  r/whatsthisfish  Dec 11 '24

A clade is a group of ALL of the organisms that share a common ancestor. It can be as big or small as you need it to be but it has to contain all of the branches descended from the ancestor and nothing not descended from the ancestor.

For example, if you're talking about dinosaurs you're not talking about the "clade of dinosaurs" unless you include birds in the group. You're also not talking about the dinosaur clade if you including things like pterodactyls, because, while they do share a common ancestor with dinosaurs, the common ancestor was not a dinosaur, so pterodactyls are not in the dinosaur clased.

Electricity effects different fish differently depending on a variety of factors. Two big factor that make fish more susceptible to electricity are larger body size and smaller scales.

I'm not talking out of my ass, I work as a fish biologist and have several hundred hours of fish electroshocking experience. This is 100% what a fish being shocked looks like.

Are these orcas?
 in  r/whatsthisfish  Dec 11 '24

Here is a peer-reviewed paper that references the connection

Otherwise you can think of it more simply like this: trout, lungfish, and sharks are all fish. Trout and lungfish are closer related to Dolphins (and people) than they are to sharks, Lungfish are closer to mammals, dinosaurs, reptiles, amphibians, etc. than they are to trout or sharks. If lungfish, trout, and sharks are all fish then so are all vertebrates.

Are these orcas?
 in  r/whatsthisfish  Dec 11 '24

Yes that is accurate, and mammals are members of a clade of fishes, specifically sarcopterygii aka the lobe finned fish.
