Learning more
 in  r/Shinto  1d ago

  1. Yes. Several.
  2. many:

-The Naobi-no-Kamisama: They were born in response to the Magatsuhi-no-Kamisama - deities of disaster - to rectify their evils

-Muto-Tenjin - an incarnation of Susanoo-Okamisama who guards against plague.

-Toshitokujin and Toshigami no Kamisamas - deities who descend during the new years to determine fortune.

-Most deities can be appealed to for blessings.

  1. Most distinct areas have Ujigami - tutelary deities - or may be inhabited by Tengu, Sanjin, Yamabito and other similar deities. Specific areas such as mountains and agricultural properties have tutelary deities such as Yama-no-Kamisama (mountain deities) and Ta-no-Kamisama (field deities). Lakes and larger bodies of water may be connected to the realm of Ryūgū-jō and have their own local Ryujin deities. Lake Biwa, for instance, has several folk narratives connected to it.  Inanimate objects may also produce Yōkai.

  2. Indefinitely. The deity Iwanaga-hime can revoke immortality from Kamisama, after which they live for long periods of time but eventually die. Some narratives detail deities like Izanagi-Okamisama dying, but this is not supported by more acclaimed narratives.

  3. Rituals specific to the religion, attendance to Jinja, purificatory practice, etc. It depends on the ritual implements one has access to.

Emperor Julian the Apostate
 in  r/monarchism  2d ago

By the way, you describe yourself as Shintoist (in other words, a pagan).

1.) Not exactly a Pagan as Japan was never conquered by a Christian nation. This term also fails when regarding Buddhist prevalence in the country, as Shinto deities were worshipped by Buddhists and sects such as Shugendo adapted Buddhist doctrine to pre-Buddhist concepts.

2.) I meant my comment in a comedic tone. Saying the interpretation of such an event isn't supported by scientific evidence won't get you too far in religious discussion. Though, as you said, the earthquake in this context likely didn't occur and any argument, even if the Christian God is supposed to be real, fails as the main notion is disputed.

In any case it is uncertain what, if anything, actually delayed the reconstruction efforts. Some say it was a fire, which is very different from an earthquake. And some say this was just posthumous Christian propaganda. It's not known.

👍

If we can’t interpret earthquakes as divine will, what has this all been about?

Amano-Iwato is in Takamagahara, so it isn't *physically* an object of worship. It could be argued that it has an Ujigami but since it's already in a divine realm, I would argue it is meant to be an expression of the divinity of Amaterasu-Omikamisama in a similar manner to the Three Imperial Regalia.

I am dead serious. A toad deity is the tutelary god of Japan and is said to determine the extent of the rule of the Japanese Emperor.

I will never get the chance to post this again, so enjoy.

I agree regarding ideologies like Shōwa and Chiangist fascism, but National Socialism is just a different order of madness.
