I recently bought a Pentel Graphgear 500, and I have a (kind of) stupid question.
 in  r/mechanicalpencils  8d ago

These used to be standard way back when. All the P200 series MPs I bought as a kid had one of the cleaning rods in the eraser. They probably got dropped to save on costs.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the 0.7mm Staedtler 925 series pencil I bought recently came with one.

The Residence pencil
 in  r/mechanicalpencils  13d ago

There's a NicPro set that has a 1.3mm and 2.0mm pencil in largely the same style. That one's caught my eye, but for the price (around $7.50 a pencil) I feel like there's better deals to be had.

I got the red one!

A classic pencil and the gateway to my lifelong love for Pentel MPs. Being a purist, I had pooh poohed the notion of these pencils being in anything other than the original colors... Until I watched an artist talk about how he bought his P205s in the varied colors to fill with different hardness leads. Should have gotten out of my own way on that one :-)

Funny to see the W Germany label on the Tikky's clip. I still remember that time ... Nice pencils!

Back to basics - Pentel Sharp P205/7/9, with a guest appearance by Kuru Toga KS
 in  r/mechanicalpencils  26d ago

I haven't owned a Pentel P20x pencil since I started using the Graphlet 300 (PG307 in particular) back in the late 80's. I picked up this three pack, and couldn't be more tickled. They feel really familiar and comfortable in hand and I know I'm going to enjoy using these again.

It's funny the things you remember... When I was a kid, it seemed like the erasers were dark green and I'm pretty certain each had a cleaning pin embedded in it. I remember breaking off each of the clips of the pencils at the stem. The remnant was always a scratchy/sharp flat edge, which led me to eventually prying it off.

The Kuru Toga I picked up on a lark. I read on this sub that the KS was the most tip stable, so I opted for that model. Given all the engineering that seems to have gone into this pencil, $6 seemed reasonable. I've found it to be a usable daily driver for note taking at work. I've been alternating between it and the Zebra Del Guard I also bought recently. I think for my intended purpose, note taking and general work use, either of these are fine choices. The Kuru Toga actually feels a little nicer to write with, despite being in 0.5mm vs the 0.7mm for the Del Guard. Neither of these would be in the running for favorite pencil or most aesthetic, but I find them functional and interesting.

Where to start collecting
 in  r/comicbooks  Mar 05 '25

Hoopla is fantastic for new readers (and even oldies like me). They have a little of everything, from Marvel classic Omnibuses to single issues of current series, e.g. Saga, Monstress.

Any good resources on the rise and fall of Marvel UK?
 in  r/comicbooks  Mar 05 '25

I also enjoyed the Marvel UK line of reprints. It was the only way I could get my hands on early Marvel stories, the digest sized newsprint series. Cut my teeth on a lot of the canon early in the 80's. The frustrating thing to 8 or 9 year old me was there were only 2 stories per digest and I could only buy one or two at a time...

I found this on Wikipedia. Check out the References and External Links section for more as a start? Good luck!

A Small Haul
 in  r/mechanicalpencils  Mar 01 '25

According to some descriptions I've found, it's rubber(?) It's a very thin coat, and not unpleasant. I think it will actually be helpful for my kid to help with his grip.

Very happy with these so far. The thicker leads write very smoothly and produce a dark enough line that I wonder if they didn't ship with B's. Only concern I have is the coating eventually wearing off, but overall a minor one.

A Small Haul
 in  r/mechanicalpencils  Mar 01 '25

Down the rabbit hole indeed... Picked these up as a recent birthday present to myself. In order from top to bottom:

  • Rotring 500 0.7mm
  • Staedtler 925 35-07 0.7mm
  • Kokuyo Enpitsu 0.9mm
  • Kokuyo Enpitsu 1.3mm
  • Zebra Delguard 0.7mm

On the side: * Uni Smudge-Proof 0.7mm leads in HB, B, 2B

I'm a Pentel fan through and through, but I wanted to try out some of the more highly discussed pencils on this sub. Some quick thoughts on these:

  • The Rotring and Staedtler: Wow, what nice gear. Both are excellently designed and engineered. In addition to the nice heft and easy manipulation for drawing and writing, they are just very nice to look at. Definitely can understand the hype. I chose the Rotring 500 instead of the 600/800 on a recommendation (as well as keeping things in my price range).
  • Kokyuo Enpitsu 0.9 and 1.3mm: I picked these up for the lead thickness, and also wanted a style of pencil to eventually give my 6-year old as a starter. Both these pencils have a light coating of some sort, and have a soft triangular shape that is easy to hold. They are pleasant to write with, if a little light in weight. I was surprised to see that both had retractable tips, which seem like a nice feature (will see how well this holds up).
  • Zebra Delguard: I was interested in the engineering on this pencil. I'll eventually get a Kurutoga as well, I'm sure. While I do appreciate the development that must have gone into this pencil, the problem they are trying to solve just doesn't seem worth the effort. I do press hard when I write, which is why I use 0.7mm leads. Breaking leads just doesn't happen that often for me, so the lead protection features of this pencil, the way the springs move the lead sleeve around to cover the lead and prevent breakage... It makes for too much of a ballpoint pen-like feel to the writing experience. Couple that with a thicker plastic barrel and plastic clip which is molded into the body (I'll probably snap it off in the next month) and this drops it to the bottom of the pile. I leave this in my work bag and it absolutely works fine for note taking at the office. That's probably where it'll stays for now.
  • The Uni leads are just to start testing out something softer for drawing. I remember preferring to stick with HB leads when I was younger, simply to avoid the smudge. These are marketed as smudge-proof, so we'll see how that works out.

Looks unique with that rotary lead indicator. How does that impact the feel of the pencil in hand/during use?

Kimono series
 in  r/mechanicalpencils  Feb 26 '25

So pretty. I haven't owned any P200 series pencils in a lot of years, and was eyeing this as a way to pick some up again. The color palette is lovely and still largely in line with the breakdown by lead thickness. I know you can get P200 pencils in a broader range of colors now, but I would still expect a 0.7mm lead when I pick up a blue one :-)

100% agree! A little on the light side, but a steady performer for daily use.
