You just passed away, and allowed to be reborn but not as a human, what do you wanna be?
I read extinct species and immediately thought trex, but reading the rest of your comment it would probably be a lot harder to hide that one

I don’t think I’m the kind of nurse that will buy my belligerent patients lunch
Just hearing this story made my day that is so cute

I once bought an orange soda for a hospice patient because he desperately wanted one (and hadn’t been having good PO intake) and the hospital didn’t have any available to patients (only in vending machines). It made him cry because he was so happy which 100% made it worth it. But that’s a special circumstance.
Otherwise I bought a pack of hairties that I keep in my locker for patients who need them because the hospital doesn’t have them and the best we have stocked are rubber bands

My child is in the PICU - Absolutely stunned by what the respiratory therapist just did.
Absolutely agreed. Just because we can pass it off as a joke/say it’s probably not intended maliciously doesn’t mean that a child will not take it seriously. Teaching kids to lie to safe adults (parents, doctors, etc), even if that is not the intention, is a dangerous and how abuse gets covered up.

something is off here
Truth. Also why I don’t trust people who tell you to google supporting research for their claimed truths but refuse to provide their own sources

The silliest reason a patient complained about you?
That is absolutely hilarious. Reminds me of the time I had a double AKA patient who’s height was somewhere around three feet so the computer put his BMI at 60 even though he was of average build-just missing most of his height

I looked it up and here’s the definition (source): “Exostoses are bony outgrowths that extend from the surface of a bone, while enchondromas are cartilage tumors that grow within the bone’s marrow.” They are not exactly the same, although they are both bone tumors

What medical problem scares you the most?
Similarly, locked in syndrome

I Might Not Be Alive Soon
As a nurse who’s worked in the ER, they will absolutely not pull your tooth out. The most we do is antibiotics and pain management

I Might Not Be Alive Soon
Medicaid (insurance for people who make below a certain income), depending on the state, will cover most basic treatments without cost (medications, hospitalization, doctor’s visits, etc). It’s just having to jump through a lot of hoops with the insurance to get the proper paperwork in order

Feel like a fraud after having a catheter put in for an unknown reason
Unfortunately an external catheter will not solve urinary retention. They are great for incontinence though

I feel like a lot of you are ER or ICU nurses on this sub. What specialty are you?
Same! Part orthopedic post-op patients, part ED admits/observation patients

Does anyone else genuinely not care what their patients did/are? (Murderers/Rapists etc.)
I second your opinion. As long as it’s not affecting their care, I think nurses can feel whatever they want on the inside

Does anyone else genuinely not care what their patients did/are? (Murderers/Rapists etc.)
It genuinely upsets me to think that nurses would be intentionally inflicting harm on anyone regardless of their background. It’s in a similar vein to withholding detox meds because “the patient did it to themselves” or not giving pain meds because “the patient is asking for them around the clock.”
I did not get into this professional to dole out justice, and I’m acutely aware that I do not know someone’s whole life story. Everyone will get the exact same level of care regardless of what they’ve done. When it comes to any kind of violent crime though, I do prefer to know. While anyone can be violent and I do try to keep that awareness, knowing that they have history of violence makes me take a moment to think and to protect myself intentionally

As a floor nurse, thank you for doing this. It’s so helpful to know before the patient is already on the floor, in a specific room, with a specific nurse, etc

What’s the most ignorant thing a patient told you?
I’m fascinated by the use of placentas to treat chronic wounds - did you find that they helped wounds significantly? Or were other treatments more beneficial?

What’s the most ignorant thing a patient told you?
So that’s what causes people to be gay??? I always thought it was the vaccines that did it! /s

This thread is bringing up an unexpected anger for me. I always think I’ve dealt with the Covid trauma, and then a thread like this pops up, and I realize how much it still affects me. For some people, the pandemic ended when the lockdowns did, but I think it will stay with me for life

Let’s see how long this story lasts
Well don’t worry I’m sure they only placed it as a precaution and didn’t actually put medicine in it because that makes so much sense /s

Unintentionally one and done and devastated. Anyone else?
I agree with everything you said. My comment did not address all the nuances of adopting out of foster care. I just wanted to make a point that there are legal avenues for adoption where the adopted child won’t be “court ordered back to their bio family.”
Foster care is a whole separate beast (and if you are fostering, reunification should be the goal you go into it with) and not something I’d recommend for OP. I mention the foster care system simply to say that there are children that are not infants that need permanent homes. OP also mentions they live in a community with many adopted children and has wanted to adopt, so I’m hoping they have seen some of the struggles that come along with adopting.
There is nothing easy about fostering and adoption, and I absolutely did not mean to imply that it was. If OP does choose to pursue that route of expanding their family, they will absolutely need to do more research and decide if it’s something they are willing to commit to

You’re right that adoption isn’t “just” adoption. However, you can adopt children in the foster care system that have a “termination of parental rights” completed and are legally free. There aren’t any chances of being court ordered back to birth family at that point. If you are looking at private infant adoption, there is usually a period of a few hours to days where the birth mother can change her mind, but that is it. Not many adopted children are being court ordered back to birth families

AITA for being upset at my husband after he told me to stop nursing in public?
Then turn your head the other way and stop being immature about it. I’m sorry that it is such an inconvenience to you that other people (including a baby who has a tiny stomach that doesn’t hold food long) also want to eat

Or to quote OP’s husband “that is so embarrassing” lol
