Should I leave the south of France and relocate to rural Ireland?
 in  r/AskIreland  2h ago

The weather is awful here. That alone would make me advise against moving here, but you do have a nice, comprehensive list, and know what you want!

Where do you live in the south of France?

I've always dreamed of living in Provence, but my French isn't great, and I struggle with humidity haha. I'm a weirdo, as I've been told, as I love the cicada noise. I'm from Co Mayo (which I believe is the most beautiful part of the county!) so if you have any nature questions, let me know!

Slán!

David Ben-Gurion letter (1955)
 in  r/hebrew  2h ago

Thank you so much!

I really need to work on my vav, yud and gimel letters! I honestly couldn't tell them apart. I found the ק and ם to be really tough here as well. If I handwrite this, would you be able to give me feedback ?

I appreciate your help ❤️

Was I wrong to tell a bunch of feral children to feck off?

especially when they're in a gang.

This would be a lot of males in Ireland. Once they leave their emotional support group (ie, lad herd), they're devoid of any personality. It's hard being a woman in Ireland.

Also, good on you OP!

Translate David Ben-Gurion letter (1955)

Ever since I started learning Hebrew a few months ago, one of my goals was always to translate this letter (I ❤️ Ben-Gurion) and found his handwriting to be a challenge!

My attempt:

ד.בן = גוריון

To Shmuel Dovan, (Royich?) Nahalal Hakraot, 9 Adar Tsaviyu (1.3.55)

Dear friend,

It is possible to say with certainty that war is imminent and decisive, and we can say with certainty that we are facing a very serious battle, and the decisive factor is that we must all be fully prepared with ammunition and be ready for battle. Because only with a strong will -- both military and political -- can we withstand the battle.

Yours in friendship,

D. Ben-Gurion

------------------------
This is the source with the original document. Note, the translation in this source says

Ben-Gurion wrote Shmuel Dayan (1891-1968), a member of the Knesset, or Israeli legislature, in part: "…It can be said with certainty that war, possibly a decisive one, is imminent. It can also be said without any doubt that we are facing a difficult and serious political struggle. The conclusion therefore is that we should [be] prepared with amply ammunition and should be ready for war. Because only through readiness--military and political--will we be able to withstand this battle…"

if it's helpful to the native speakers here.

My questions
- is my translation okay? where are some of my errors?
- the statement ידיד וקר I believe I got wrong?
- likewise for this statement הקרות, ט אדר תסייו which I believe that I got wrong?

Thank you all again! ❤️

I F22 houseshare with an American woman 39 who keeps bringing up the age gap between me and my boyfriend who just turned 30. Its really starting to annoy me. How do I tell her off non awkwardly?
 in  r/AskIreland  1d ago

A common way to annoy a bully is to take away the pleasure they get from you. For example, if she says something to you that's insulting (the age gap, etc.) tell her that you don't understand it, and have her explain it to you. Then, keep doing that. Her having to do this will take the joy out of it, annoy her, and will probably make her fuck off to find her next victim.

If you stand up to a narcissist, it usually backfires as it just enables them, due to negative attention still being attention to feed their inflated ego. You could set up boundaries and not deal with them, but it might be hard with your living situation. Playing stupid, and taking away their joy from you, has worked before for me in the past.

I hope you don't have to deal with her much longer ❤️

I'm been having an issue translating this. My attempts:

The two witnesses: There is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Or,

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

I was unsure which is more accurate here to the Shahada in the mosaic. Also, in photo 2, i attempted to label the diacritics, where

- sukun (cyan)

- shaddah (red)

- tanwiin al-fatth or tanwiin al-kasar (yellow)

- fathah or kasrah (purple)

- dhfur (blue)

- dammah orange)

Any hints on where I went wrong, or corrections?

Prime Time: Interview with UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine
 in  r/ireland  2d ago

Who is their media machine? There is no centralised press in Israel. It's a democracy. Also, my Israeli mum loves Palestine and speaks Arabic. She participates in many protests. Please don't broadstoke all of us Jews.

There are many Israelis protesting for the release of the rest of the hostages, or against the government, or war itself. You only need to read an article or two in Hareetz to see this.

I'm happy they're back home ❤️

My attempt at translating these signs:

Photo 1 (Sagui Dekel Chen)

Bring them back to us.

Note: I was unsure of the context of thie drawing of Israel + a heart = 73 days. I looked up this ynet article, but it doesn't appear to specify the 73 number? I saw he was 493 days in captivity, and the State of Israel was older tha 73 years old, so I was unsure?

Photo 2 (Eliya Cohen)

I'm here, I'm not [?], dear.

Note: I was unsure מקזז meant here, in this context?

Photo 3 (Liri Elbag)

I love you, citizens of the State of Israel, and my family!

Photo 4 (Omer Shem Tov)

Now everything is fine! Thank you to the dear people of Israel and to all the soldiers and volunteers! In the chosen God

Note: I was confused by the double yud in החיילים for some reason, thinking it was ״ by the writing. However, I believe this is correct?

Note:

I was a little confused by حالك here? Is ك added to حال to imply "challenge your status/self"?

Photo 2

The ladder of success is waiting (for you?) to take one step at a time.

Photo 3

Note:

Does رفيقة also mean "dear friend?"

Photo 4

Face your fears.

Note:

Does يخاف and مخاوف mean "fear" and "fears"? And, adding ك to مخاوف creates "your fears"?

Photo 5

Note: adding لك "for you" to مستقب creates "your future"?

When counting do you use the femine or masculine forms of the number?
 in  r/hebrew  2d ago

Ah, apologies. I think I'm just confused.

For context, I saw two lists here from 1 to 20 in Hebrew, either being masculine and feminine. So, we'd use either or depending on the gender of the noun? And, after 20, would it just default to

I accidently said "there are no gendered numbers" when I really meant we just default to Apologies if I made an error here!

Spice market signs (Lebanon)
 in  r/learn_arabic  2d ago

In Arabic, is the word "of" not used? For example, in the sentence, I see that

  • سعر التفاح (apple price)
  • 50 ل.س (50 SYP)

Therefore, put together, they say "the price of apples is 50 Syrian pounds?" Where "of" and "is" are already known to the reader in the sentence?

I saw another sentence on Google which said

and I believe فنجان القهوة means "a cup of coffee"?
