I think PM and FM were the hardest for me. There seemed to be more complex content to have to remember

To be honest, I don’t think my exam went very well. I didn’t feel comfortable going in and hadn’t studied enough. So maybe I won’t give the best advice haha. Hopefully I scrape a pass!  I have only ever used the Kaplan exam kit and go through as many questions as possible. I have never completed the book. I haven’t used study hub but I feel more people are using that these days  There is a link in the post, that’s basically the study plan I follow

You will see my first exam I studied 110 hours, a lot more than the next 4. That was becuase I read the kaplan study guide, took notes as I went and also did end of chapter practise questions. I think that was a lot of wasted time as you say.

The following 4 exams I just read the kaplan study text over about 2 weeks. Getting a feel for the content, making brief note of things to refer back so. Then I started the practise questions. It does mean I am pretty shit at answering stuff at the start becaue you don't actually know much (depending on how good you are at remembering what you read - I dont think I am). You eventually get through it though and it has worked so far.

I found this reddit post very helpful for structuring studying here. I basically follow that. I will add that link to the post.

Study Hours Summary 2024 - 4 Exams

Its quite tough. I definitely question my life choices when I am in the thick of it. As I said, when I am in study mode I am not doing much else outside work because I am pretty knackered.

I also currently live at home and get a lot of help from my parents so I am not sure I would be able to do it without them. They make my dinners/make sure I have food for lunches/pick me up from library etc. It is a huge help.

I have bought a flat near my work so will move into that in coming months so that will cut out long commutes and makes things easier for sure.

When I am studying after work I would always take a short break, maybe go a walk, and then go straight into studying either at work or at nearby library. I never go home after work then start studying becuase after the long commute I am then not starting until quite late in the day and I basically dont have the motivation. Maybe you could do the same? It does mean I get home quite late but at least when I am home, I can just chill

Study Hours Summary 2024 - 4 Exams

When I started ACCA I couldn't find any info on how many hours I would actually need to study per exam while also working full time. So I tracked all my study hours for the year so others can get an idea. I added as much info as possible.

Here's my findings for 2024, for anyone who cares...

Exams
2023
FR Dec - 56% 110 hours studied (added for reference, not included in stats below)
2024
AA Mar - 63% 81 hours
TX June - 58% 70 hours
PM Sep - 51% 53 hours
FM Dec - 57% 57 hours

The Stats (based on 4 exams taken this year)

  • Total hours - 260 hours
  • Study sessions (didnt log unseccesful ones) - 132 sessions
  • Biggest day - 5.5 hours
  • Biggest week - 18 hours
  • Ave per week - 8 hours
  • Ave weeks per exam - 7.5 weeks
  • Most days in a row - 13 then 6 (13 is outlier)
  • Days studied - 132 days
  • Average study session - 2 hrs
  • Most popular days - Mon/Tues/Wed/Friday
  • Least popular day - Thurs/Sunday

Days studied
M 25 days
T 27
W 22
T 11
F 22
S 16
S 9

Hours per day
M 46 hours
T 46
W 45
T 18
F 53
S 36
S 18

Takeaways

  • Study well at the start of the week, Thursdays see huge drop off
  • Friday is popular but I often work 4 days so I am off work
  • Sunday is pointless, often try study on Sunday but often fail to. Will take Sunday off from now on
  • Didn't feel comfortable going into PM and FM exams having only studied 50 ish hours. 70 hours is propably what I need to feel comfortbale

My situaton / other notes

  • Working in Scotland at a small practice
  • Work 35 hours per week. We can condense our hours into 4 days so take Friday off. A few hours overtime required each week to keep ahead
  • Commute 2.5 hours per day for work. Not ideal.
  • I wouldnt say I have much of a life when I am in study mode. Long commuting time doesn't help that
  • I don't have kids
  • I study after work, not before
  • Only logged successful study sesions. So if I sat down for an hour and didnt do anything, I didnt log the hours
  • I use Kaplan study text and exam kit and self study
  • Basically just followed this reddit post as structure of my study

Feel free to ask me anything or tell me I am mad for logging all of this haha
