Discussion/General Photoclass 2025 is here - are you ready?

Photoclass 2025 is live!

Hello, photography friends! I'm one of the mods over at r/photography and founder of Focal Point, here to invite you to the 2025 edition of our (free) photoclass! This year comes with changes, as you can always expect from us as the class is an ever-evolving project.

What is the Photoclass presented by Focal Point?

It is an evolution of the original Reddit Photo Class, but with substantial changes to not only the structure, but content as well. We've reinvented it to ensure its up to date and more interactive. One thing we did not - and will not - change is that it is entirely free. The course spans 6 months, and covers topics on the technical side and artistic side, and culminates in a personal project. Along for the ride is a team of teachers who write the course (hi, it's me!) and mentors who come from all genres of photography. We have regular live meet ups via discord, and have a welcoming and supportive community of other photographers to bounce ideas off of, or just talk shop.

So what's new?

  • The Format. First off, the formatting is changing. We found that may participants stumbled upon the course mid-way through the year, and were fumbling trying to play catch up. We also were not happy with the pacing, finding that it just took too long to get to the objectively more fun stuff. So, this year the course will happen over the course of 6 months, with alternating weeks of new lessons and feedback. What does that actually mean? It'll look something like this:

January 1: Unit 1 will be posted with assignment 1.

January 8: The first Feedback Week will happen.

  • Feedback Weeks. During Feedback Week, participants will receive constructive feedback on their unit assignments from both peers and mentors. This is an opportunity to reflect on your work, ask questions, and refine your skills. Additionally, voice chats will be held on the Discord server for live discussions and more in-depth feedback.

  • Units over Lessons. Lessons will come out as units, meaning instead of one new lesson a week, you'll get a whole unit each alternate week. Here's an example, using Unit 1:

    Unit 1: Getting Started

    On Photography

    Inspiration & Feedback

    Assignment 1

  • Interactive Elements & Videos. Each lesson will have an accompanying video, and interactive elements. For an example of what the interactive element might look like see this page.

How to join in?

  • Join the Focal Point Discord server. This is where all the voice chats will happen, as well as a great place to have ongoing conversations with other participants and mentors.

  • Join the subreddit: r/photoclass. As always, the class will be posted on the sub, but we should note that the interactive elements don't work on Reddit, so we'll also be linking out to the lessons on the Focal Point site.

  • Subscribe to Focal Point on YouTube. Videos for the class will be of course posted in-line on the lessons, but there will be bonus material posted to the YouTube directly.

  • Get your printed Learning Journal or download the PDF.

Have more questions?

First check out the FAQ found here. If you still have a question that isn't answered there, feel free to ask it here and myself or one of the other teachers/mentors will be happy to answer.

Where to start.

The first unit is available now! You can find it right here. The first assignment is also live, so feel free to jump right in!

See you in 2025!

Artifical Lighting & Studio Trying to practice product photography. How do I do the lighting for this shot?

I'm new to product photography and am searching for basic lighting advice for some practice shots like this that I'm doing. I'm experimenting with both natural and artificial lighting, so any tips on how to get a clear shot with lighting like this would be appreciated.

Technical Help/Camera Settings 5 of my 15 photos I took with my camera at a party last night came out completely green and dark when I saved them but they look fine in my file viewer, and on the camera library preview. What could have possibly caused this and how do I fix it? It is a Canon EOS M6

Technical Help/Camera Settings Shutter speeds for motorsports?

Over the weekend I was taking pictures of an old college team's car, (canon eos 40D with ef 70-200mm f2.8) and I got great pictures, but unless you see the series of pictures or there's dust kicked up, a lot of the photos don't even look like the car is moving. I had it set to aperture priority and f2.8, but I wish I'd done shutter speed and found one that gets the car sharp but parts of the wheels a little bit blurred so they look like they are moving. Anyone have advice for this, any good starting points for shutter speed?

Discussion/General Is Lumix TZ60 enough for casual use?

Upvotes

Hi! I am a casual user of a digital camera. I use it when I go out with friends and family or just to take photos during hangouts/gatherings/function. I have a Lumix TZ60/ZS40 and wanted to ask whether that's good enough for casual use. Not gonna lie, I've been wanting to sell it to upgrade to a Lumix TZ99/ZS99. Should I keep the TZ60?

I kinda want to recreate something like this for my engagement photos but I don’t want to just slap a b&w filter on some pictures. So I was wondering if anyone knew how to achieve this sort of lighting. I’m still an amateur when it comes to photography so anything helps!

Buying Advice Camera to document my 20s — OM-1 vs Fuji X-T5?

Looking for a camera to document my 20s — backpacking, nature (macro and astro too), street photography, and more casual/spontaneous social moments. Not a beginner, just upgrading from a basic kit to something that’ll last a decade.

Finalists:

• OM-1 with 12-100mm f/4 Pro + Leica 15mm f/1.7 (~$2.2k total)

• Fuji X-T5 (price varies depending on lens, but with a 23mm f/1.4 or 18-55mm it’s around ~$2k).

Would love non-cultish advice on which system better fits an all-around, do-it-all setup. Thanks!

(Edit / Side question):

I’ve also been considering another idea — since I’m so conflicted, what if I bought both cameras (the OM-1 with 12-100mm Pro and the X-T5 with the 23mm f/2), spent a few months shooting with both, and then sold the one I liked less? With current tariffs, would this actually help resale since I’d likely be able to price a bit more competitively than sellers from Japan, somewhat guaranteeing a solid resale? I’d love any thoughts on whether this sounds like a smart way to figure out what fits me best, or if there’s something I’m overlooking.

Discussion/General What would you say is your average "hit rate" of keepers?

If I get 10% after a day of shooting I'm mostly happy. 15-20% in ecstatic! Photography is hard and it's all too easy to get discouraged.

I'm interested to know what others think is a good day for them?

For context - I mainly shoot candid family shots, out and about in my local area and seascapes.

Hence 10% if I was doing super hard stuff like some of you are all mentioning, I'd be at 0.01.

I tried some bird photography last year and literally got nothing.... wildlife shooters are on another level!

Buying Advice Is there a 1 lens fits all for indoor and outdoor sports?

Upvotes

I’m currently looking for a longer zoom lens and I’m torn. I think I know the answer, but thought I’d ask so I feel better about it.

Bodies: Canon R8 and Canon t3i

Lenses: EF 50mm 1.4 EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM EF-S EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

I’ve had the t3i for years and just picked up the R8 as an upgrade. My oldest plays both Volleyball and Soccer so I’ve got very different lighting conditions. I’m no professional so this is all just for fun and my daughter loves having pics from her games.

I think the best route is going to be the EF 70-200 f2.8L II. It’ll be best for indoors on the R8, but a little short for half the soccer field. In reality I could toss it on the t3i during the day for extra reach.

Any 100-400 option just doesn’t see fast enough for indoors. I think eventually I’ll pick one up, but I’ve only got the budget for one $1400ish purchase (used) right now.

Technical Help/Camera Settings What is the correct SS for shooting fast moving kids?

Upvotes

I ask because my camera’s (Canon R8) auto setting / scene mode for fast moving kids is 1/200. But I’ve always shot at 1/500+ in Tv mode for speedy little ones.

Which is correct?

Technical Help/Camera Settings In-camera contrast, shooting jpg - if I increase contrast do I also increase the chance of blown highlights?

Upvotes

I ask because I’ve recently been testing increasing the in-camera contrast settings and I’m getting a lot of blown highlights / over exposure, that I wouldn’t normally get with the exposure settings I’m using.

Buying Advice 55-250mm Vs 70-300mm lens?

Upvotes

Hi all,

I own a Canon 90D paired with the 55-250mm IS STM lens.

I was wondering what the benefit would be, if any, to get a 70-300mm IS II USM for landscape? Apart from the reach, I mean.

Any owners of the 70-300mm that made the switch from the 55-250mm that could provide some feedback?

Thanks!

Buying Advice Nikon Zf + 40mm f/2 SE vs. Z 50mm f/1.8 S — worth upgrading if I’m chasing the Fujinon 35mm f/1.4 R “magic”?

Hey everyone!

I’m currently shooting with a Nikon Zf and have the Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 SE. I love how compact and fun it is to shoot with, but I find myself missing a bit of that “character” or rendering magic I used to get from the Fujinon 35mm f/1.4 R on my old Fuji setup (the dreamy rendering, beautiful bokeh, and subtle glow in wide apertures).

I know the Fuji 35mm is roughly a 50mm full-frame equivalent, so I’ve been eyeing the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S as a possible upgrade.

Has anyone made a similar switch (40/2 → 50/1.8)?
Do you feel the 50mm f/1.8 S has any of that “soul” the Fuji 35mm f/1.4 is known for? Or is it too clinical and perfect?

I’m mainly doing street, travel, and some portraits — so I care more about character and rendering than pure sharpness. Autofocus is a plus.

Any insights or sample photos would be super appreciated! 🙏

Thanks in advance.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Why does my shutter speed change immediately after I take a pic when im am in manual mode??

So idk why but whenever I am in manual mode, my shutter speed changes after I take the picture. Like last night I went to a local river to take some night photography of the bridge, and id set my ISO, Fstop and Shudder speed to where I like it, take the picture and when I look at my settings my shutter speed has completely changed so if I wanna take another one I have to change it back. Its annoying. Its a Nikon D7500 and its been a problem since I started learning how to use manual mode. tried googling it but I couldn't really get an answer. Any advice??

Here’s a video of what I’m talking about.

Discussion/General Do you have any book recommendations for a master's thesis on the evolution of portrait photography?

Hello!

I have a master's thesis topic "The Evolution of Portrait Photography from 1945 to the Present". Can you recommend me some books about the history of photography (or more specifically that of portrait photography), other books, studies, etc. that relate to my work

And if you have any recommendations on what direction I could go with the thesis, I will be grateful

Trying to take long exposure of starlink satellites and that green thing showed up? If you zoom in it looks like a plane or something. It was not there with the naked eye and I have never seen anything like it with this iPhone. It was pitch black and I live deep in the woods with very little light pollution. There were no light sources other than stars and the moon in the photo.

Buying Advice Which camera is best for me?

Hello!

I am totally new to photography and would like to learn about it, that's why I need some of your advices on the type of camera that would best suit my future uses.

I often go hiking and spend a lot of time in nature, so l would like a camera that allows me to photograph wildlife (insects, birds in flight, long-distance animals) and landscapes. Being able to film would be great. I also have a passion for cooking. Take photos to highlight my food would be great.

About the price, l'm ready to pay 1500/2000 (without lens).

Thank you

Buying Advice I have a Xiaomi 15 ultra. Which of the two Hoya CPL filters to choose?

  1. Hoya UX II CPL
  2. Hoya Nano Mk ii CPL

It will be permanently on. I want to use it as a protector and also polarizer for outdoor photography.
As a result I want it to be easy to clean and not scratch easily. I hear the mkii retains light transmission better which I think will be important for small mobile sensors but at the same time is the price difference for my usage justified?
To close it off, it will be a one and done purchase. I'm not looking to have many filters and switch around.

Buying Advice Camera suggestions for fashion shots for camera newbee?

Hi guys. I'm looking at the Fujifilm X-M5 and really like the quality of images it produces and that it's fast. It's important for me to be able to take burts and after pick the best one. But it's so much I wont ever use. Like video recording and all the filters/editing. I work with Photoshop for hours everyday so its not needed. So a fast camera with good quality images. Any suggestions?

Buying Advice Ultra wide angle lens for movies/videos: cine vs normal lens? (Ttartisan)

Hi there!

I am working with films and videos, (beginning of my journey) and I am looking to acquire a wide angle lens (between 10 and 16mm) for my Fuji xh2s.

The thing is, I live in a country where most options aren’t available. What’s available is the ttartisan 12mm 2.8 for Fuji, alternatively I could acquire a more expensive ttartisan 12mm vision cine 2.9 for another mount and also get an adapter.

Any recommendations if it makes a big difference if I catch a cine lens for video than a normal one? Especially by TTartisan.

In terms of alternatives, I’d be open to hear but there really isn’t much I can do because of where I live. I could get the Fuji zoom but it’s super expensive (1200 dollars). They don’t even have the sigma zoom here.

Thanks for your help

Buying Advice What compact camera should i buy for my 50 day thru hike?

Hi guys,

Next summer I'm going to thru hike the HRP which is a 1000km long trail in the Pyrenees between France and Spain that aims at staying on the highest possible route possible.

Anyways, I made the decision of not bringing my phone (my girlfriend will have hers) and bringing a camera instead. Obviously, hiking by ourselves for this long means we are counting ever gram and so that's why I need a camera that compact. Because of the location, i'll be shooting mainly mountain landscapes and occasional wildlife (although not a priority at all).

I am very open but would prefer if the total setup (body + lens) is less than 400g (excluding extra batteries, charger, sd card etc.) and I would like something that is somewhat weatherproof. I have no real budget altought under 2000$ cad would be nice. I also dont mind if it's a fixed lens cam or a body + lens combo but please propose which lens in that scenario.

So, what would be my best options?
