This man needs a statue.

I can't afford a statue, but I'll buy a laptop battery in his honor

Ironically he would probably want that the money for this statue go to a student instead

16

u/Syn7axError 9d ago

It doesn't need to be solid gold.

21

u/SadMcNomuscle 9d ago

Could use the money to fund a school art project to build the statue. Kids get valuable experience utilizing materials, and he gets a statue. Win win.

6

u/TheRealestFaker 9d ago

This is a great idea. Really ties it all together.

Someone else pointed out he could have sent 2+ of them to school instead of buying that engagement ring that was 3 years salary.

21

u/AgentCirceLuna 9d ago

He didn’t even necessarily have to send them to college himself - he could have used business contacts to get them an apprenticeship with a funded scholarship. Quite a few businesses do them.

2

u/williamiris9208 9d ago

An apprenticeship with a scholarship would’ve been a win-win no debt, real experience, and a career path.

Just sad that he died in 2005 and the first schoolarship started in 2007, so he never saw the impact he had.

Proves once again that there are good people out that that do amazing things and ask for nothing in return. That is what I was taught from a young age and what I have received in return (no you can't spend it) is immeasurable. Nothing which I have done can compare with this but I know I have changed lives and given opportunities. Maybe they remember maybe they don't, but I will always feel-good inside.

50

u/BuQ7 9d ago

This is what the definition of an influencer should be!

8

u/xsf27 9d ago edited 9d ago

As much as I agree with your terminology, the word influencer is nowadays being overused ad nauseam in this age of ubiquitous social media and almost always coined after people who leverage their popularity online in order to profit off it.

Oftentimes their 'contribution' to society is trivial at best to downright disgusting at worse (Logan Paul, Johnny Somali, et al.).

So it cannot be overstated, but I would rather call this man a hero.

His selfless acts were the very definition of charity, aka helping others without any expectation of anything in return, other than their gratitude.

Therefore, anytime I see an 'influencer' talking about doing charity, or be described by others as being heroic, I vomit.

8

u/loudlavenia 9d ago

Indeed that is true.

4

u/mushieburner 9d ago

Sure, but it's the duty of the rest of us to give him something in return.

Dude needs a statue.

4

u/ELVEVERX 9d ago

Proves that whatever country he is from is broken. What sort of country would restrict young people who were willing to learn from going to university through financial restraints.

7

u/barbazul3yogui 9d ago

Great for him. Now, those 33 should do the same with another 33 each one. And so on. Between the fourth and fifth step, the tuitions would be history.

Man sacrifices all his life so that others might have a chance.

Did he want to marry? Did he want more than he got? He deserved a happy life, too.

This glorification of never taking any joy for yourself and sacrificing your entire life for others - makes me sad, but at the same time, I do want to honor him for so much sacrifice.

7

u/MisterVovo 9d ago

He wouldn't need to do such sacrifice in a serious country

3

u/919471 9d ago edited 9d ago

This one's a reach, ngl. Sending 33 kids to college is not a life-or-death decision. We don't know why he didn't marry. I don't see why we should assume he was miserable. He had a steady job, a frugal lifestyle and a charitable disposition. None of those is a systemic failing.

Edit: I checked the Wiki article. He had 3 million in savings at the time of his death, which he then arranged to be spent on giving poor Iowans access to college. He lived frugally and decided to do some good once his time was up. Definitely not orphan crushing machine. If it wasn't college it would've been something else.

2

u/Manbro25 9d ago

The point here was that these kids should've been able to go to college without the philanthropy of a random man from iowa.

Imagine being able to send 33 people to university on a carpenter's wage nowadays. All those savings will just go on paying for a house and bills.

9

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 9d ago

This is the old person version of, "5th grade girl saves allowance to clear entire lunch debt of all her classmates."

It's lovely and objectively selfless at an individual level. But step back and it's emblematic of a failing society. Because in a rich country like the US, no one who's smart enough to go to college should be prevented from doing so due to lack of funds. And the concept of "lunch debt" at a school shouldn't even exist.

2

u/Eseru 9d ago

Honestly. In my country we do still pay a substantial sum, but a friend went back to college a couple years back and the $27k a year fees became $9k with government subsidies, which every citizen receives. It was further reduced to $3k a year with a bursary for low income households.

I used to envy the US as a child for being where all the cool stuff was but now I'm quite thankful I wasn't born American.

I've been a carpenter for 27 years and never married and no kids. I couldn't put myself through college, let alone 33 others. Props to this guy, I can't save for shit. I don't understand how he only owned 2 pair of pants cause I end up with holes in the knees of all my work pants and have to buy new ones.

9

u/Professional-Rip561 9d ago

It’s really not. My dad owns two pairs that he wears for years and years. I’m sure they meant at a time. Not over his entire life.

Good for Dale.

1

u/[deleted] 9d ago

Wow!

1

u/I_Makes_tuff 9d ago

I'm a carpenter and I'm just wondering how he could afford to do that for 33 kids and I won't be able to do it for my own 2.

2

u/TheBunnyDemon 9d ago

It would have to have been before tuition rates exploded. I checked my local state university and this would cost $1.7 million just for tuition, not even counting textbooks/lab fees/etc.

2

u/TrankElephant 9d ago

He apparently saved almost 3 million over his life.

2

u/TheBunnyDemon 9d ago

That's wild. Frugal must be an understatement.

1

u/kingbugz10113 9d ago

1

u/ImpossibleKidd 9d ago

That’s beyond amazing!

Hope for humanity indeed, with a dude like Dale in existence. He didn’t need or want to live in extravagance, when he most likely could’ve, and literally gifted the spoils of his lifetime of hard work to make others lives better. That’s legit mind numbing.

Dale is fuckin’ awesome!
