Helpful [Read Me] Rules / Helpful Links / Commonly Asked Questions / Weekly & Monthly Mix Threads

Welcome to /r/Beatmatch a subreddit for seeking and providing help on anything related to DJing.

The Rules

  • If you're posting a mix you MUST post it to the weekly mix thread.
  • No "for sale" or "wanted" posts. There are better places for buying/selling gear.
  • No discussion of music/software piracy. Do not link to torrent sites. Support the artists who make the music and software you use.
  • Absolutely no self-promotion on other people's posts at any time. If someone asks you for your page, that's cool, but unsolicited linking will get your post removed.
  • Reddiquette as always is in effect. Treat each other with respect.

Posting Mixes

  • Weekly Mix Feedback Thread is now a sticky thread. This is the only place where you should be putting your "Hey guys check out my new mix" posts.

Posting Gear Questions

Please include the following in your looking for gear posts:

  • Do you want to go digital? CDJs? Vinyl (w/digital vinyl)?
  • What features are you looking for in gear?
  • What is your budget?
  • What environments are you looking to play in (clubs, raves, weddings)?
  • What style of music do you intend to play?

Weekly Mix Feedback Thread - April 07, 2025

Welcome to the Weekly Mix Feedback thread on r/beatmatch! This is the thread where you post your DJ mixes and ask other people to give you feedback. If you submit your mix, please take the time to listen and comment on some other submissions, especially if they play a style of music you're interested in. Thanks for your help in making these threads work well for everyone!

These threads are intended for beginning DJs who are honestly looking for feedback or critique on their technique, selection, transitions, etc. If you are an established DJ who is just looking for more followers/listens on your new mix or have a podcast/radio show, please post it to a more appropriate place such as /r/mixes or a genre-specific subreddit. Posts that appear to be purely promotional in nature may be removed at the moderators' discretion. This subreddit is aimed at helping new DJs learn and is not the place to promote yourself!

Guidelines:

  • Please include the genre(s) of your mix. This helps attract DJs/listeners of the same genre(s) who are likely to provide more useful feedback. You might also include a title/length.
  • [Mixcloud](http://www.mixcloud.com) is the preferred place to post mixes. It allows you to include your tracklist and transition times, allows unlimited uploads, and is generally more geared towards DJs. If you don’t want to use Mixcloud, be sure to include a tracklist.
  • Please ask for specific feedback or list parts of the mix you liked/didn’t like. Hopefully you are looking for input on specific tracks or transitions.

Example post:

[House / Tech House] djscsi - moving on up (45 minute mix)

http://www.mixcloud.com/djscsi/moving-on-up/

I’ve been spinning for about a year, this is the third mix I’ve recorded and I’m hoping to get some house / tech-house DJs’ opinions on my track selection and mixing. I really like the first few transitions but I feel like I lost some of the energy when I brought in the Maceo Plex track at about 13:30. I messed up a couple parts but I’ve listened to the mix a few times and I think it sounds pretty good. Does anyone think I used too much FX? Thanks for any feedback!

Note: If you have any general feedback about these threads or /r/Beatmatch in general, please message the moderators

What controller should I upgrade to?

I don't know if this is the right subreddit, but I'm looking to upgrade from a Hercules DJControl Inpulse 200 MKII. I've been using it for about a year (maybe more), and I feel like I've outgrown it a bit. I've heard that ddj-flx4 is a beginner controller but would that be worth upgrading to? A few other things I would like to mention, I like using serato but I'm open to trying other software. Obviously, this is not going to be my last controller, so I'm not looking for a cdj-3000, and the price range is ideally less than $1000, but I don't mind spending a bit more if it's worth it.

Will this setup be worth it?

Upvotes

I’ve been Djing for two years now and I play with my Traktor S4 MK3. I haven’t really played in a club but I always play at house parties and small events. I play groovy and hypnotic techno and whatever I make I just invest it back in my equipment. I’ve made quite enough for now and I’m planning to get Xone 96 + 4 CDJ 3000 setup. I’ll use this setup at my home to get better at club setups and rekordbox but I’m also planning to start and host my own events very soon to which I feel will be quite useful as I’ll be inviting other DJ’s aswell. Will this setup be worth it or are there are better options to play around with?

Hardware DJ Audio Recording

Seeking help for recording my dj sets.

I’m aware that the DJM-REC app is free but its limited to a some clubmixers only. I want to get a physical recorder like the Evermix Box 4 (seems to be discontinued) or the iRig as a back up.

I’m wondering if anyone has experience using the iRig Pro Duo or Stream 2 for recording your sets. I’m keen to buy one as a backup recorder but not much reviews online of its use for DJs.

Hope you can share your thoughts on it.

Worth upgrading to Rekordbox 7.1.0 from 6.8.5?

Upvotes

Hi r/Beatmatch

I'm currently into using STEMs and it sounds horrible in 6.8.5. Is it worth upgrading to 7.1.0? Also, I don't want to pay a subscription to AlphaTheta. Is that what i would have to do if i were to upgrade?

Industry/Gigs Copilot writing your press kit / epk / blurb / thing

I've had a history of using odd names in things from stuff like Banana Sandwich to my current derpy DJ alias of Captain Catfarts. I've used copilot for DJ related stuff like art for sets and track suggestions.

Anyway I was bored and decided I'd look at an EPK or press kit, promo blurb whatever.

So it came back with this which is reasonably fitting tbh. Obviously any links are fake and so on but the overall presentation is pretty reasonable.

Could be useful - I just asked can you give me an epk for a cruisy house dj named captain catfarts who is an orange tabby cat DJ in a dark suit

This is what I got back:

Rekordbox Beatgrid Issues When Logging Into SoundCloud

Hey everyone, I’m running into a weird issue with Rekordbox and could really use some help.

So, I have a bunch of tracks that I’ve bought from Beatport, and the beatgrids are all spot on. But every time I log into SoundCloud to stream tracks through Rekordbox, the beatgrids for all my tracks—including the ones I bought from beatport—get thrown off.

It’s like they shift about half a beat backwards, even though the grid itself still looks fine. I don’t want to manually adjust them because sometimes they randomly go back to normal, and I can’t figure out what’s causing the shift.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix or setting I’m missing?

Help recording with Serato Pro

I'm using files purchased from beatport (not streaming)

I'm using Serato pro 1. I press the record button on Serato - it appears to be recording as the timer begins rolling along after I press REC 2. When I'm done I stop the recording by pressing the REC button again 3. Next I press save 4. I go to my destination folder and see the .aif file I just saved 4. I drop the .aif into audacity and nothing is on the file

What am I doing wrong? It's my birthday and all I want to do is record my first mix and guilt my friends into sharing it as my bday present. Can someone, anyone help me. Thanks.

Workaround for SoundCloud’s horrible sound quality?

Hey!

I’ve been recording mixes for my SoundCloud profile using FLACs and ensuring the mix stays well-underneath red lining to avoid any distortion, yet when uploading my mixes to SoundCloud they still sound like shit :(

I’m not sure I’d like to upload my mixes to other platforms given that SoundCloud is the most popular platform for consuming DJ sets, and YouTube’s copyright rules could be hard to work around too (unless I’m wrong).

Any thoughts? I read that paying for SoundCloud artist offers better sound quality for your uploads, if anybody has done so please share what you think.

Thanks in advance :)

how do you take care of your sleep hygiene? (earworms, being hyped at night)

So I have a pretty healthy life, no alcohol, no drugs, no cigarettes. Gym, healthy food and I sleep a lot usually (since I also have a chronic condition). I have a pretty uneventful routine.
I am in the process of learning how to DJ, practising at least for 2-3, sometimes 4hrs everyday.
I try to end my practice by 7pm. Since I started, I have not been sleeping so deep anymore. The tracks I listen to "haunt" me when I go to sleep and I feel hyped.
Is it normal, does it go away? It might have something to do with the fact that I have generalized anxiety but how do I get better at this? I want to dedicate this time to learning the most I can and hopefully start getting gigs in a year or so (maybe even sooner, I was already offered some but I don't feel ready yet).
Thanks for tips!

Question on music you play vs. music you listen to

My buddy recently told me that the "music I listen to" shouldn't be the same as the "music I play" (I.e. keep on my USB).

How do you discern what tracks you want to collect onto your drive?

I've generally just collected music I like hearing, but that's created a problem where my library is too large. This prevents me from truly getting to know my tracks because there's so many to choose from. So I'm starting over now.

So yeah, I'd love to hear your thought processes on what makes the cut onto the USB, and what stays in the Spotify library.

Industry/Gigs How to network with/talk to other DJs

Introvert here, this may sound weird because to the majority of you this may happen naturally but I really struggle with networking with other DJs (and/or bar staff, promoters, etc.).

For example when Im out in a bar where a DJ is playing, I don’t know how to approach them or what to talk to them about, apart from „hey I like your tunes, I’m a DJ as well …“, which I really don’t know where this conversation would be going (though I did not try it yet).

I guess I always feel like I’m promoting myself / giving a pitch / asking something from them which makes me a bit anxious. After all, I’m afraid of rejection so I end up not talking to them at all. I’ve had 15-20 private gigs and one paid bar gig so I guess I always feel like I’m asking the big kids wether I can hang out with them (imposter kicking in). Even though my gigs generally go well.

I know networking is importantly and of course i’m also looking for ways to get gigs, but I’m genuinely interested in meeting other people from the scene.

To most of you I’m sure this sounds a bit ridiculous, but can you maybe share your experiences with this: - how do/did you approach other DJs - What do you talk to them about - What’s the right mindset to have - How to really connect with them As concretely as possible? For example, is „hey I like your tunes! I’m a DJ as well, how did you get a gig here?“ rude (as in this case I’m directly asking for something)?

I really want to go out there and connect with other people, I’m aware that there is always a risk of rejection, which is fine because this is life. but I really want to untie this knot in my head. Any help is really appreciated.

Hardware How do you guys record your live sets?

I just had my very first gig (my own birthday rave) and brought my GoPro to make some recordings. My plan was to maybe just put the rekordbox recording on top of the video for good sound quality. But then you cant here any sound from the party itself, so probably you'd need a good mic to record both?

How do you go about this? If you're using a mic, do you have any recommendations too?

Industry/Gigs When networking, do you introduce yourself as your DJ name or first name?

My name is just my last name, I want to be genuine but also for people to remember my DJ name, as most people just call me by my last name anyway.

Have you gotten skilled enough to a point where you can show up and play on any DJ gear, no matter what it is?

In my short time gigging, I have showed up to many where I had to play on equipment that's different from my mixer at home. It always has the same basic functions, but the buttons are in different locations. I feel like you're not a "real DJ" until you can play on anything.

Mixing with multiple effects?

I just saw a clip somewhere that a high pass filter and an echo sound good together. I'll be it my decks are pretty simplistic but I've never thought of adding two effects at once. Do you add two effects to the same track? Or one and one? Would love to learn more about this.

Hardware Curious question: what is the equivalent DJ controller of the Pioneer SB2?

This is just out of curiosity, but The Pioneer DDJ-SB2 I use for DJing, what is its equivalent? What controllers are similar to it in terms of the price range, features, and what it was marketed as?
