Why ??? Many of them are black or mixed but i learned that black and mixed dont mean anything it seems in brazil in politics? Is it because of uneducated/ macho ? I dont understand why doing martial arts means u necessarily have be pro army, pro bolsonaro and propoganda of that nikolas ferreira ? Please explain why u guys think sports especially martial arts are so full of them? So I'm visiting Brazil next week and although I'm still a bit overwhelmed with what to do (considering I only have 1 week in two cities), one thing I'm not sure about is how well I will be able to communicate with people. I'm a native spanish and English speaker and I can actually mostly understand written Portuguese due to its similar vocabulary to Spanish, but I cannot understand a word when Brazilians speak Portuguese. I know very few Brazilians speak English but would it be rude to speak Spanish and hope to be understood somewhat?

We are going there as a group of foreigners from Rio, renting a car and we want to spend couple days around beaches around Paraty, and Jacuecanga. Hi everyone, I’m a Japan-based traveler currently in Brazil. I’ve been HIV-positive and undetectable for 8 years, but on my first day here, I lost my toiletry bag at São Paulo GRU airport near the LATAM boarding gate for a flight to Belo Horizonte. The bag had all my HIV meds for this trip.

I’m now in BH and still traveling across Brazil for the next several days. I’ve contacted LATAM and GRU lost & found — no updates yet. I’ve also emailed my doctor in Japan for a prescription (I don’t have one on me).

I need advice on: • How/where to get emergency HIV meds in Belo Horizonte or São Paulo • Any contacts for GRU airport or LATAM that might be more responsive • Navigating care as a visitor with foreign insurance

Thankfully I’m with a local friend who speaks Portuguese and is helping me. Any guidance would be deeply appreciated!

Update: Thanks so much to everyone who replied to my post. I wanted to share that my friend took me to UPA Centro-Sul in Belo Horizonte. I brought my passport and some past documents showing my viral load and prescription, and the doctor there was able to provide both a new prescription and the medication I needed. I believe I got really lucky with the whole situation. They had some medicine in stock so I was able to receive them without going to other pharmacy. Also I received them for free.

As Swiss nationals, we get 90 days in Brazil. I have heard that you can extend your visa for another 90 days at the Policia Federal.

But I can't imfo if I qualify as a Swiss national. Does anyone have more detailed information or experience? Or can tell me where I can find the information? TIA

A friend and I want to celebrate NYE in Rio de Janeiro 2025-2026. We just started looking for a place to stay (April) and oh my gosh, it's crazy expensive! I'm talking 100€+ for a bed in a dorm room per night per person. I assume that this is just the price we pay to be in such a beautiful place for a special date. Or should I be looking at different sites / wait a few weeks before booking / ...?
Background: I'm travelling SA for a year and by that time will have already visited Rio for at least a week. Because I'm doing a big trip, my budget is 50 euros per day max. but I assume this won't be possible so I'll have to live on a shoestring budget for some time before and after. It'll be my friend's first time and they're staying longer. So we'll probably not do the touristy things together.

Do you have any tips on how to keep our trip affordable?
Does it cost anything to go to Copacabana beach (fireworks, jumping waves, concerts)?
Are there any neighbourhoods / things we should avoid? Is staying in Lapa safe?

Hi! There’s a slight chance that in about a year me and my family will be visiting Brazil, and as I’m the one in charge of planning everything, I’d like to ask for your input. We come from Poland, so I already expect Brazil to be more accepting, based on my limited knowledge of Brazilian politics and legislation. For context, I’m a trans girl and I’m 16, haven’t started HRT yet though, as the process here is very… long. But I digress, based on my current plans, we’d be visiting areas less popular with tourists I think, as I plan to visit Porto Alegre, Erechim and the small town of Áurea in Rio Grande do Sul, and then go in and see Chapeco and São Joaquim in Santa Catarina, there’s a slight chance we’d get to see Foz do Iguaçu too, but that’s not very likely. (Let’s just say we like seeing unusual places okay?).

Now, after spending some time in this subreddit I’ve read that Santa Catarina may not be the best of places to be a member of the LGBT community, but I’d rather ask here either way just to confirm what I’ve seen on here.

Of course, I’d be travelling with my parents.

My question then is, how’s safety, tolerance and acceptance in the areas I’ve listed, and, on a broader spectrum in Brazil as a whole too, as I can probably always change up the plans too, and either way, it’s always better to know, as I’m interested in national politics of all countries lol.
Would I be fine? Would I perhaps experience some smaller or bigger inconveniences or worse? I mean I’ve had enough of my parents (and to be fair the whole population of my country) not really accepting me, so it’d be nice to experience acceptance on holiday from locals for a change.

(Before anyone asks, I’m aware that small towns are more conservative, and Brazil is probably not an exception to that. Also, yes we do know something about general safety, we’ve been to different places and in that respect we would probably be fine. And either way, for research on the general safety I’d be easily able to do it myself or tell my parents to research it, I just know they’ll never consider my safety as a trans person so I have to look it up myself, like asking here)

In October, I'm going to a concert in Porto Alegre and I saw on the website that there's an option to buy the "entrada solidária" (solidarity ticket), which, according to the page, involves bringing a non-perishable food item when entering the concert. My question is: as a foreigner, can I buy this ticket? I'm worried about buying it and not being allowed in if it's a benefit only for Brazilian citizens. Thank you very much!

I’m a foreigner and have a SP Brazilian friend whom I met abroad. They invited me to stay over in their house if I ever come to Brazil.

I then say I’m coming, and I then never get the offer again. No apologies or nothing similar when we met when I arrived here, it’s like they never said it (more than once).

Also a couple of times they’d go: “oh let’s meet when you’re there, I’ll be there too”, and then cancel last minute.

I know the latter is relatively common. But it’s strange. I find it incredibly impolite. Like I get the “sweet words” and overpromising culture, we have a similar situation where I come from (Egypt).

But I don’t know, we’re also a very hospitable culture of foreigners generally speaking. Usually if we say sth like that we mean it and then a bit more. I’m hoping that someone would tell me that my experience was a bit extreme. Otherwise I’m sorry, that’s just extremely disappointing.

I need to renew my Brazilian passport within the next three weeks so I can (hopefully) get it before July 6, but I’ve already experienced a lot of delays.

My Brazilian birth certificate took about a month to arrive, and when I first tried to apply for my Título de Eleitor, the process was super slow. Because of that, I ended up submitting a new application.

If anyone can share how long it took recently to receive their título, it would help me so much. I’m just really worried I won’t have enough time to renew my passport in time. I am in the UNITED STATES the nearest brazilian consulate to me is in Boston

I currently live in the US (citizen) also have my Brazilian passport. My wife (us national) and I want to move to brazil sometime in 2026. I have a weird work situation and would like to know if anyone has any insight on these. I work as a contractor have my own LLC, I work in Guyana on a rotation basis 28/28, I do not pay any taxes to Guyana as I don't stay over 183 days. I do get paid through an American company. My question is if we were to move to brasil how would the tax situation work, as I would not break 183 days in any of the 3 countries. We would visit US once a quarter for about 15 days each time. Just wondering how this would play out, I would prefer to just continue paying taxes to US. Thanks for yalls help.

There is a lot of yummy food to behad and i've gorged myself on a lot... But there is an epidemic of over-sausing. It's too much! Sometimes I get a sandwich and end up having to drink it as soup. Everything is slathered is cheese sauce, or syrup, or some other form of soupy substance. You can barely enjoy the favor of the underlying ingredients.
This is somewhat the case for salt use as well. Sometimes I feel like I'm eating a salt with a side of meat. Lol.
