Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Picked up this pioneer sa-6300 Has about 20w per channel, and is working very well. Got it for 100 euros, original manual included even (always fun to read).

Really happy with it so far. it has all the things i really want, and those things usually come with these old small amps :) Phono input, headphone jack, some eq and balance control and the best thing about it.. it looks great! All the buttons and switches are also incredibly solid and satisfying.

It is from 1976 and nearly twice my age.. still holding up pretty well for a 49 year old :P

Purchasing USA Yamaha good or bad?

I have a thing for me coming up and I can get a big gift and I wanted to upgrade my receiver and I was told to spend more to get something better than the Sony 190 and I was wondering if the YAMAHA R-N600A 2-Ch x 80 Watts is a good unit? I’m needing a receiver with a phono ground, tape in and out, FM radio, and has a remote and this one has all that (I think lol)

Purchasing USA went looking, found an AV cabinet for ~98% retail

Post image
Upvotes

Found this AV cabinet used at a local shop for a tremendous discount from used.

Story: The piece of furniture my setup is on in the living room was beyond ready for replacement.

I had “some kind of feeling” I should visit my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore — they might have a “real piece of furniture” instead of buying new at IKEA.

In my head I had some type of hutch, low cabinet, or TV stand with a budget of less than $100.

Wandered around, looked and sighed at some things which didn’t fit the bill, or were literally IKEA cabinets painted with house paint. Finally spied this Salamander Designs “Elba 221” at just my price: $42.50 USD

I cannot imagine paying $2.1K USD for this… but at less than $50 it seems like a steal.

Review/Discussion Finally got some decent speakers!

I have an Onkyo TX-2500MKT receiver and my turntable is a JVC L-A21 (nothing fancy, but it does the trick for now).

Finally replaced my old JVC speakers with Advent Larges. Got them locally. Love them. Love the bass and mids.

When I eventually upgrade my turntable, what should I look for to complement the receiver (which I love) and the advents (also love!)?

Thrift Store Thurs Apparently, I'm becoming the "One Off" king. Found this bad boy at GW for $8. They did not have the matching speaker. So, it will go out with the garage setup that consists of nothing but single speakers. I'll list them in the comments. This one works great, needs a lot of power to push it though.

Purchasing USA Need some fast advice!

At a packed estate sale and assume someone else will scoop these soon. Not sure if I need the monitors or the small sub but I could probably put them in the rotation once I upgrade my AVR. Maybe resell? I assume the JBL is the star and worth it? There is also a Kenwood crs158 and next sub sw-300. Advice?

Led Zeppelin's Presence is not in good condition. 😢

The first song on each side is skipping at the beginning. I'm trying a few ways to solve it. Any recommendations?

For those who don't know it, I recommend this album by Tom Zé. David Byrne heard it for the first time when he came to Brazil and, since then, he has been releasing Tom's work in the US.

I created my own rule that if I'm going to buy an album by an international artist, I also have to buy something national. This time, it was in the 2:2 ratio :D

Purchasing USA Best subwoofer around the $500 price range and available on Amazon

Hi, I currently have the Vanatoo t1e for my speakers at my desk and I've been holding off for years now on getting a subwoofer for it. I have a good amount of Amazon gift card balance that I want to use towards a great subwoofer to pair with the t1e. Does anyone here have a recommendation around the ~$500 mark? I was aiming to get the RSL Speedwoofer 10S MKII but it is not available on Amazon. Thank you in advance!

Purchasing USA Looking for set of bookshelf speakers

Yeah, cant make a decision on which of these 3 (or more if you have an opinion) to go with. They're all 3 about the same price ($220) so its more so about sound quality. Not much room in the budget to go much higher though. They'll be in a decent sized living room but I tend to sit 4-6' mostly. Thank you!

Purchasing USA thoughts on sony d-ej011?

shopping around for first portable cd player in years. don't want used, so options are companies still making these new (fiio dm13, aiwa pcd-810, km5 cp1, klim nomad) or finding something still in its original packaging on ebay.

research is leaning towards sony or panasonic... i'm finding a few sony d-ej011's for around $150. anyone have experience with these, or know if i can do better?

$25 for this bad boy. I currently have the Audio Technica LP60X hooked up to a Kenwood amplifier. No tape deck so that would be nice to have. Regardless -- good deal? Is it a solid setup? Good turntable?

Purchasing AUS/NZ Sony SS-MFP15 and Sony SA-WP1500

Hey everyone, I'm new to this hobby and currently running my 5 disc changer into my dad's Sonos 5. I've been looking into getting speakers for a while but haven't known where to start, and a listing on FB marketplace has just shown up for $100 for 2 of each of the items in the title. Find the attached photo above; please let me know if these speakers are worth it or if I should keep looking; thanks, everyone.

Purchasing EU/UK Cambridge Audio A1 MK3 amp - Missing Speaker Terminal Screw

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi there. First ever post on Reddit (so apologies if I have made a mistake or error). This morning at a Car Boot Sale I purchased a Cambridge Audio A1 MK3 amp to use in a second set-up in our attic room. It’s in absolutely lovely condition except for a screw/knob missing on the speaker terminal. I was made aware of this before purchase and assumed it would be easy to buy a replacement on eBay but unless I’m entering the wrong details I’m not really finding much (and what I am finding actually costs more than I paid for the amp itself). Does anyone have a solution? Is there anything on Temu that would fit and act as a replacement? I’ve also noticed that there seems to be the remains on blu-tac on the terminal. Would holding the speaker cable down in the terminal with blu-tac be a (even short-term) solution? Or could I go to my local hardware store and just purchase a regular bolt and use that? If so, does anyone know the thread size used on this model? Many thanks in advance for any help or advice that you may be able to give me.

Purchasing USA anyone have good quality budget speaker recommendations for record player?

Upvotes

Hi, I just bought the Audio-Technica AT-LP60X, but I have just learned that I need a set of speakers to actually play the music...im new at this can you tell? I have been researching different speakers, but it seems like all of the good ones are wildly expensive or can only be found on amazon. I prefer buying any audio equipment through Guitar Center as their warranty is unmatched. I read through the Asurion insurance through amazon and it doesn't cover half of what Guitar Center covers. For reference I am trying to listen to the Preacher's Daughter album. I'd like bluetooth capability to connect my phone but it is not necessary. I was looking at the following, but I really don't know anything about speakers...I just want the audio to sound great.

PreSonus Eris 3.5BT Studio Monitor (2nd Gen) (Pair) - $139.99

Yamaha HS3 3.5" Black Powered Studio Monitors (Pair) - $229.99

I'm hoping not to spend more than $150 on speakers as I already spent a lot on the record player itself but if the speakers are worth it, I am willing to splurge.

Thank you for your help.

Review/Discussion I know nothing about room treatment - what can I do here to improve sound? Room not huge, about 12' by 12'. Carpeted, fabric sofa. Tips for what to upgrade next welcome too if you spot a weak link in setup.

Stereo Piega P4L II's, Rotel pre-amp RC-03 and RB-871 amp, Topping E30 DAC.

Surround Monitor Bronze 6's fronts, cheapo Auna's as rears, Yamaha RX-V379 AVR. Will update AVR at some point to one with pre-outs so I can use the Piega's for films & games too and move the Monitors to another room.

Review/Discussion Importance of high pass filter in 2.1?

Post image
Upvotes

I’ve been using the Denon pma-600ne for 2.1 music, movies, and games for about three weeks. I’ve been very pleased. The one thing that’s been on my mind, as my return window closes, is the importance of a high pass filter.

Not many integrated amps offer one in this price range. I have seen/read good things about the Emotiva basx-ta1, which has one set at 90hz, but also loses points in the waf in my case.

I’ve experimented with tone controls and bungs (and half-bungs), but for my most critical use, vinyl, I like it best in the source direct and analog modes with no tone controls. And the speakers fully open/ported/un-bunged. Vinyl records don’t tend to over-deliver on bass anyway. And the kef q1 meta doesn’t sound bass-heavy to me. I actually think I like having them get the 40-100hz signal for music, adding some imaging to instruments that the rsl 10mks can fill out.

But perhaps the bungs and tone adjust just have drawbacks that a hpf wouldn’t and I don’t know what I’m missing. So what do y’all think? Guaranteed a noticeable upgrade and worth returning this pleasant setup to pursue an amp with built-in hpf? I don’t think I want to mess with attaching inline filters/crossovers/attenuators btw. Unless y’all have some advice for that, it just seems messy and I would wonder if I’d actually improved upon the situation.

Particularly interested in vinyl, btw, don’t care as much if it’s imperfect with movies and games and radio.

Thanks in advance, and thanks for the advice I’ve read to get me this far!

Purchasing EU/UK Recommend an Amp and Speakers for Eversolo DMP A6

I’ve had a DMP A6 for some months and have it hooked up to some Genelec 8030’s on my desk.

Getting itchy feet and tempted to look at getting an amplifier and some bookshelf/stand mount speakers and now looking for some recommendations.

Maybe £1k budget.

Had considered the Eversolo f2 but not sure if there are better options for the money.

Room is a small office 3m by 4m and speakers will be in the corners of the room flanking my desk. Therefore speakers do not need to be massive and need to be comfortable being relatively close to a wall.

Purchasing EU/UK Wharfdale Diamond 12.1 vs Mission LX-2 MkII vs Q Acoustics 3010c

I've narrowed my search to these 3 options. There are no shops near me to test hifi. My room is small but there is enough room to position the speakers 12" away from walls, I will be using stands and already have a Mission sw150 sub.

Use is music only, mainly rock/metal often from the 70s and 80s and I don't like bright tizzy speakers.

Can anyone please help me choose?
