Question Neighbor’s Bantam keeps joining my flock

Hello!

So I have a new small flock of 5 birds. They are all about 6ish weeks old (I was given the birds when they were 5-10 days old, not 100% sure on exact age). Our neighbors have a much bigger flock and one of their bantams keeps coming over to my back yard and yelling until I let him into our run. I’ve been making sure he has food and water outside of the run, but I know my neighbors love this bird and want him back.

I’ve carried him over to their house multiple times and removed food and water for him today. What else should I do to help keep him over at his proper home?

A little bit of background. This bantam and his brother decided a few months ago to living in our backyard. We didn’t know who they belonged to at the time so we fed and watered them. They lived in our backyard for about 2 months until we found the owners of them.

They stayed at their proper home for about a month and as soon as I moved my chicks outdoors, one of them decided to come back and is now demanding entrance into the run.

First pic is of Gill, the neighbors bantam. And second pic is of my chicks, Tuvix and The Sisko (the two black sex linked, at least I think that’s what they are), Ronda (the one on the left), and Mary Kate and Ashley the other two (not sure on the breed).

Thanks in advance for any help!

Question Bee sting? Advise needed!

Post image

UK based

So today poor bluebell suddenly looked very swolen. We picked her up to examine her and noticed her wattles and throat are very swolen indeed. The left hand side seems more swolen, and upon examination I think I found a spot on her where she may have been stung. This corresponds with a pea sized firm area under the possible puncture site. The swelling seems fleshy and of the outer skin layer, her throat feels normal underneath.

She is happy, energetic, loving treats, and behaving completely normally. She is drinking water well, making normal chicken noises, and she is breathing normally.

It is now been about 5 hours since I first noticed the swelling and there have been no changes.

She has clean nares, clear eyes, no respiratory symptoms. Her mouth is normal and free from lesions.

I have administered a big chicken dose of Metacam for pain relief and to bring the swelling down.

Any advice?

Vet reopens tomorow (closed today)

Thanks chicken folks :)

Question Hen still sitting on eggs

I have a hen that has already hatched 5 chicks, and I has given her 5 to adopt. I also placed the chicks broken egg shells to try and convince her they're hers. But now she's trying to incubate the broken eggs. Should I remove the eggs? She start to look for her eggs though...

Hello! I'm so excited to find this! We just started our adventure with chickens and I am beyond excited! These feathery velociraptors are amazing, none of my previous experiences have been good to say the least. I would like some basic information though. They're free range during the day and cooped at night. For scheduled feeding, and their routine being what it is, when is the best time to feed? How often? Currently we have 23, including two roosters. What are some tips and tricks y'all have used that are tried are true? 10 pullet (roughly 6 months) cinnamon queens and only one is laying. There has been a lot of movement though. Getting them in the new coop and run has been a bit stressful, but their colors look good from what I can tell.

Question Sick baby chick?

My sister has a sick baby chick. I'm going over to get eyes on it but I'd like to get the juices flowing here in the meantime. Does this sound like a chick that will can live? This is what I know (I will edit to add pics when I see the chick).

The chick is a black sex link purchased from rural King. The chick should be about a week old. She said when she got her, she had poop on her head. She was unable to get the poop off with a warm wet cloth so she left it for the most part. Now she is wondering if the chick has had her nostrils obstructed in some way. She's also wondering if the chick is blind or going blind. She says it came home with a pasty butt, which seems to be recurring, which she has been treating up to three times a day.

Behaviorally She says the chicken doesn't lay down but will sleep standing up. She doesn't pal around or scratch with the other five, in fact she claims they are not nice to her. She has seen her use the feeder and the waterer But she is not growing as big as the others, which are different breeds (rustic Rock, AmberLink, California White, polish).

So does thid sound like a chick who might make it and what should we do?

Question Chick acting lethargic

Hey everyone! I’m a little worried about a chick that I have, he/she is about three weeks old and as of this morning has not been eating or drinking and kind of just laying there. They were acting normal last night. His butt is clean, which is the first thing I checked. Anything I can do to help him. His 7 siblings are all acting normal.

Media Jackraptor project.

By luck I happened across a post with one of my Jackraptors in it so I figured I'd say hello to everyone. Pictured in the slides is Prometheus, Hyperion (2 pics) and Titan (with some measurements of Titan). It's a breeding project I started back in 2019 with a 5-way cross and selective breeding from that point forward. Phenotype isn't locked in yet but every year it gets better and better. They are meant as a dual purpose breed intended for free ranging where predation is a greater concern, and as such I put a lot of emphasis on athleticism in combination with size. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask! 🙂

Question Chick with a Limp

Two weeks ago I got brown sex links and I know they're primarily used for egg laying farmers who sell the eggs or large corporations that do. We have owned chickens for years and they're mostly pets, the eggs are just a bonus. However, where I live, it has been exceedingly difficult to get chicks this year.

This is our first time owning this breed and already two of our four have died. We gave them medicine, vitamin water, ect. We're not entirely sure why they died but sometimes it does just happen. They have a large set up with even terrain and a heater that resembles a mother hen so they can go underneath.

Just this morning I noticed one of the chicks not really getting up. It was lively enough yesterday and is clearly awake now. When I picked her up and put her down for food, I noticed she was having difficulty walking. She was limping when she did before sitting back down. I found this strange as she had seemed fine yesterday and the past few weeks. It doesn't look like splayed leg and I don't know what would cause it if it was. I don't think it's genetic? but I also don't know where she would've sprained or strained it in the enclosure. Does anyone have any advice on this?

Question Sour crop

Upvotes

I have one of my girls that had sour crop. Gave her an anti fungal for a couple days and she seems slightly better but crop is still watery feeling and she isn’t eating and hasn’t for four days. Suggestions? I don’t have a vet anywhere I can take her too as none of them see chickens. Can I feed her a slurry with a dropper? Anything?

This is day 6 of her injury. She was attacked by one of my geese and both sides of her head were ripped open ( no skull was showing which is good) . She getting stronger and healing but still has to be tube fed. Should I clean the dried blood off of her head? If so how could I do that. Her head is still really sensitive even to just luke warm drops of water. Ps that stuff is nut puss or infection, it is an antibiotic ointment

Question Base under Coop and run

Hi all we are getting ready to put a coop and run combination up and I was considering putting a load of sand down to put it on. This way there would be sand in the run area already and just to level the ground out. We would appreciate any input and suggestions. Thanks in advance 😁🐓🐓🐓

Question How do I get my chickens to at least tolerate me?

I had chickens with my ex boyfriend last year because he lived in the country and I’m in town (a country town). My chickens were scared of me if I wanted to touch them, but if I sat on the ground with treats they would come near to me. I figured because I wasn’t at his house daily they just didn’t really know me. They all got killed when a mink or coyote got into the coop one night.

Now I have new chicks and they are in my house currently. They are constantly around me and my children. I handle them daily. They are still terrified of me. Am I doing something wrong? I have 7 olive eggers, 2 Rhode Island Reds, and 3 Black Jersey Giants. Not exactly the breeds I wanted but all I could find really. I thought that chickens in general were friendly, but some breeds more so than others. Do I just need to give it time? Because my yard is smaller than what I would have out in the country, I want to make sure they know who I am and know where their home is.
