Hair Tinsel in NY

Upvotes

I’ve seen conflicting information for NYS

To apply tinsel in New York would I need a natural hair styling license? Something different?

Obviously there’s no hair cutting, chemical altering, washing etc. involved

Any info or links would be greatly appreciated!

HELP school mess up

Post image

I’m not going to go to far into detail about what actually went down for this to occur, but long story short, my niece came in and wanted highlights and a darker root/base color. The highlights turned out great but the base color turned the roots orange only on the top of the head.

How can I fix this?? I’m thinking about just doing a root tap? Any recommendations

Why am I not learning anything?!

On multiple occasions now I've been told we have assignments due in classes that aren't. Our course calendar will say we're meant to practice or learn how to use certain tools, but we don't at all or our instructor will just tell us to "style out" our mannequins w/ said tools without actually helping us or showing us how we're meant to do so...& then doesn't check our work afterwards or monitor us while we're working. On homework assignments, it seems that neither of the 2 instructors I've had actually check our answers -- they're just ensuring there's ink where there's meant to be.

I started school at the end of January & I feel like I really haven't learned much of anything. I started cosmetology school with most of my knowledge being in makeup. I don't even know how to braid - it has been so long since I've dabbled in hair at all! I am the only lefty in my class & my instructor acts as if teaching me left-handed techniques/methods is equivalent to speaking a foreign language. She will literally tell me not to watch her demonstrations alongside the rest of the class, then tries to show me whatever it is we're doing one-on-one while saying it's difficult for her & I'm often left feeling confused or wanting to ask more questions, but not wanting to be a nuisance... because my lack of knowledge feels like it both surprises & burdens my instructors.

It seems that most of my classmates have more knowledge or experience than I do, specifically in styling, but I was told that I'd learn all the basics & I haven't. I started school with 2 color classes & only started my cut class 2 weeks ago. All I've really done so far is learn about color & application...yet I'm on the floor being expected to offer styling & cuts. I can't even take color clients because I missed 2 color classes, but I would honestly feel more comfortable providing a color service than cut or styling! It just doesn't make sense to me. I feel so insecure & asking for additional help seems to be a bother to my instructor(s). My current instructor will joke about how I & a few others ask excessive or silly questions.

I feel like I'm going to have to teach myself how to use these tools & style hair at home, but that's not what I took out $20k+ in loans for. I'm just feeling so frustrated.

Social Media for Nail techs/hairstylists

Hi everyone, I’m currently a student and I managed the social media page for my aunt’s salon for a while. I learned first hand just how time consuming editing one reel a day is (especially for process/technique videos or ‘what i did today videos’ that always do well).

To keep it short, I learned a lot and am working on a tool to help nail techs with their social media. Pretty much you can just upload your camera roll each month, and it will auto turn these into 30 trending reels

Here’s the gist of what it does:

- Keeps your videos and photos in one place so it’s not on your phone with personal photos

- Turns your photos into short video clips as b-roll

- For any process/technique videos you film, it will automatically cut out repetitive/boring parts where nothing happens, optimize for performance, how long you want the video to be, etc. It will effectively edit it for you so no more trimming and copy and pasting a thousand times.

- Auto scans all of your uploads and tags/organizes them

- Creates ‘what i did today as a nail tech’, and other trendy videos from your uploads

- is trained on the most popular salon videos in order to make the best edits for you

If you’ve experienced any of these and would like to receive 30 videos for free, please let me know:

- tired of spending a long time editing reels multiple times a week

- have a thousand photos on your phone you don't know what to do with

- run your entire business by yourself and need help with social media

Would love to have nail techs and hairstylists test it for free!

(Please ignore the dust and lint, i don't have the guts to wash it, it still smells like her 🥲)

Hi! I'm looking for specific aprons. I have a cooking apron that was my late grandma's and I want an apron to look like it to cut hair in, any ideas where I can find one that looks like it?

What to do about about a horrible client in cosmo school!

I have a client that got passed down to me from a girl that graduated and she been in my chair 5 or 6 times now. She has hair down to the middle of her back and it’s very thin on top but every single time she comes in her hair is absolutely matted and it takes me 15 minutes to brush it and she looses so much hair every time. Not only is it an extra 15 minutes already to de-matte but on top of that she comes in 10 minutes late EVERY TIME then takes another 10 minutes in the bathroom before we actually get started. She doesn’t wash her hair in between visits and I’m not even sure that she showers or bathes in general. At least not regularly. Whenever I get done doing her retouch she tells me I need to let her use the remaining hair color for her eyebrows and I tell her that we offer eyebrow tinting services and hair color chemicals aren’t meant to be on her face that near to her eyes. The last time she told me to go get my “boss” and she had it out with them and they said the exact same thing. When I’m applying color and when I’m styling with a Marcel curling iron she is constantly looking around and moving her head so much!! She takes phone calls which I stand back and wait to continue the service on her. She brings up politics and is blatantly just racist. I’m at a loss I don’t want to take this client anymore and I don’t want to make a different student have to take her. Do I talk to our “principal” or the owner? She doesn’t respect our time and is offensively unclean every single time. I want to fire her but in the past I think students have just suffered through her and she’s gotten used to just walking all over us. Like she needs to go. Help.

Sorry, not sorry for the rant.

Asking for a friend if this pricing and process seems right.

My friend had a color correction and balayage done by this stylist a year ago and it took her 2-3 sessions. Now she was looking at getting it darker with the blonde pieces and getting a cut like the pic. I told her the pricing seemed high and didn’t understand way it would have to be totally bleached? The first pic is her hair now, second is what she’s wanting and third is her text chain she sent me. She was quoted $565, with full bleach out and color correction? Thank you!

NJ License by reciprocity / endorsement saying “Beautician”?

I just got my email “congrats” we’ve issued your license from stateboard. I’m originally licensed in NC, so I know I applied for Cosmetology-Hairstyling on that massive packet, so now I’m freaking out and worried about it. Did they submit my license as the wrong type? Because isn’t “Beautician” something else.. not actually called a Cosmetologist? Or is it just what we are called here? Ughhh. This took so long to do and even get processed fml. I am a lash tech so it’s for doing lashes btw lol.

I’m going to call stateboard on Monday to check & hopefully fix it, this is so annoying. I know I didn’t select that. I swear if they try to make me fill out that massive packet and pay AGAIN. 🙃🙃🙃

Blow drying using a comb instead of a brush

I'm back! I feel like I'm always here asking questions.

So I've had some clients with really thin or short hair and I need to blow dry it straight. Brush don't work for length and the comb attachment would just stab them in the scalp, they just don't have enough hair. I will blow dry with the concentrater attachment and use a comb to lift the hair. If I were to do this in a salon after getting my license, would they look at me like I'm crazy? Does anyone do this? Should be using other tools?

Transferring License

I’m currently licensed in California for Cosmetology and Barbering but I had to move back home to Michigan for family reasons.

I could find online that I must be licensed for one year in barbering before I can transfer that license but I couldn’t find any Info on time requirements for my Cosmetology license.

Does anyone have and extra information for me

CO Licensing and Supply Stores

So I’m moving to CO from KY and it’s looking like they don’t do reciprocity and I have to find a sponsor? How does that work if anyone’s done that before?

I’m just wondering if I can go into a supply store and get things for personal use at least using my KY license. I’m sure cosmoprof will be fine but I get color from Salon Centric and Salon Service Group and they seem to pull up the state registry.

CA State Board Exam Prep

I’m studying for the CA state board exam from two sources: 1. The app 2. The Milady test book. Which one should I spend my time on? I feel like the Milady test book is an overkill. Those who passed, what’s your advice?

how do i find the motivation to finish out the school year

hi guys! i’m in cosmetology school and i graduate in july, so i have 3-4 months left. dropping out would be silly and i am not willing to do that

i love cosmetology so much, but i hate the cosmetology school environment. it’s awful and has put a ton of stress on me and added to my mental health struggles immensely. literally JUST the school environment it’s bonkers. normal school never did this to me.

but i’m so close to the finish line. some days it feels so close. but i’m about to come off of spring break and im dreading getting back in that damn building again. how do i get through. what should i use as motivation?

i have a future job already lined up that i am so excited for, but even when i graduate i have to jump through a few hoops. i have to get a license and a car, take my board (bc i am not willing to rely on someone else to take me to the board, i want to do it myself), pass, then i get to work in the salon for the first time.

not skipping over the huge cost of a car and everything that comes w it, i am terrified.

but right now, i need to focus on school first. i just want to be free from the grasp of hell that is the beauty school environment 💀

any tips?

lately i’ve just been trying to keep my head down, stay in my own lane, and push through

Considering beauty school in NYC. End goal is to do extensions. I'm 27F. Is it worth it to go into the industry right now?

I went to college and have a degree in business administration, but I hate it. Due to personal sexual trauma, I don't want to work in an environment with mostly men.

Is it worth it to go into this industry right now? Money is not an issue. I want to do something and I think I would be very good at building a book of business and I'm prepared to seek training in extensions after graduating beauty school.

Also, any suggestions for beauty schools in NYC?

Tools!

I’m a starting stylist and am looking for a blow dryer, and round brushes. I’m looking for reliable, light, and not too loud. I’m willing to spend up to $100-$150 on a blow dryer. And brushes i’m just looking for something reliable and gets through the hair easy. If anyone has any brands, website, or personal recommendations please let me know!

I can't hold a job in the industry, now I don't know what to do.

Unintentional rant incoming...

I got my Cosmo license back in August 2024, so I'm still new. When I got out of school, I really didn't want to go back to doing hair. I knew I couldn't handle the stress of it and I never picked up speed from school. I figured I had no job security as a hairstylist because I was expected to work fast and work hard and I just didn't think I could do it.

Since then, I held a nail tech job for 4 weeks before I was fired. It was a busy salon, which constantly ramped up my anxiety. Also, I kept questioning the decisions of why things were done, when it felt like operations were not based on actual education of the subject matter. This ramped up my stress, and eventually my boss deemed me not a good fit and actually gaslit me into "leaving" when really, she just fired me. It would have just been easier to fire me outright.

I've been trying to find a job absolutely anywhere for 5 months. I'd applied to several nail salons/spas and got four interviews without getting anywhere and a few other interviews back in my previous industry, security, with no luck. I was getting desperate, so I opened up my job search to hairstylist positions, which I was trying to avoid. I got four interviews and two of them wanted me, so I landed on Supercuts.

I just figured I'll work here at least long enough to get my bearings and get stable, then find somewhere else to work. I've been working for Supercuts now for 3 weeks and I'm already on the verge of getting fired because my anxiety is so bad. I really forgot to take that into consideration. I figured I would struggle at first with my anxiety and speed and try to get out of there before they realized I'm not getting faster at a pace they want.

I freaked out after two clients one day and couldn't regulate my emotions when it started getting busy. The bigger bosses decided to place me on receptionist duty a couple days a week and a small amount of training with another stylist. They just called me in for a meeting to more or less get a feel for whether I can continue or not, after a really busy Sunday (that day the opening stylist was late, and then we found out the internet was not working, just a mix of bad all at once). They heard that that day stressed me out, even doing reception. Personally, I could do it. I didn't have a meltdown, I did my job, I was just stressed.

Now, I'm to get through Sat and Sun (the busiest days) with no meltdowns and no help from the manager on Sunday (the busiest day). Basically, it's sink or swim and that will determine whether I stay or not. I'm obviously going to do the best I can, but I really just needed to be eased into the position and gain my confidence, not thrown to the wolves. Yes, I have social anxiety and especially starting out in my first hair salon. Everybody knew I needed baby steps. I'm just sad that my first job as a hairstylist is turning out to be just as stressful, forceful, and as insecure as I thought it would. I was just hoping I would last at least 6 months.

Honestly, I don't even know what this rant was for. All I wanted was a stable job, now I'm realizing I can't maintain a job in the beauty industry. I feel like I failed so completely, and never should have gone to Cosmo school, only to have no stability. I left my $19/hr security job for jobs that won't keep me longer than a month. I've at least established that busy, fast-paced salons is something I can't function in, because I can do nails and hair at home (though, I don't enjoy doing hair). Every time the flow of people started increasing, my anxiety just ramped up, no matter how many times people tell me the clients are chill. I mean, I'm trying to start a small nail business at home, but I don't have the money to fund it.

I haven't even been let go yet, and I've already started working on my resume again. I'm going to try to find a receptionist/front desk/assistant/cashier position because I know I can follow orders and do them well without the expectations of "performing" in front of a busy audience. Honestly, I guess any advice, guidance, similar stories, what happened nexts would be appreciated. Sorry about the long rant.
