I am so glad I was there to see this. Some of my best friends are in the US. My mum’s husband is from Detroit. Looking across the border and seeing my flag is something I will NEVER forget.

Do all border states have this special relationship with Canada? With the recent news it has felt like a total gut punch watching Canada be attacked/disparaged.

Nice protest!

142

u/BullsOnParadeFloats 14d ago

Detroit is one of the largest commercial crossings with Canada in the entire nation. You likely see a few Ontario plates regularly on the road, especially around a costco or target.

30

u/vanalla 14d ago

The Ambassador Bridge in Windsor/Detroit facilitates more trade than the US's entire balance of trade with South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, the UK, India, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, France, Brazil, etc etc.

54

u/TaterTotJim Pontiac 14d ago

I match with girls from Windsor on the apps and sometimes they even come over to the ol USA to get to know me. Last year they wanted to immigrate now not so much lol!

I have had Canadian coworkers who crossed daily for work.

I do see a lot of Canadian plates out and about for sure.

20

u/Psylent_Gamer 14d ago

Yeah, not mention there's a fair amount of companies that have employees from Canada but are US based.

Main GM and Ford off the top my head, same for AAM.

It is actually the largest, by far. I think in other parts of the US it can be easy to not understand that.

9

u/Bergatron25 14d ago

Mixed families too.. Hockey and lacrosse brought me over to Canada many times being from the Detroit area.

1

u/importshark7 11d ago

Canadians even come across the border for school. My Univeristy was in Detroit, and I had Canadians in some classes that drove across the border every day.

1

u/endurance-animal 13d ago

I grew up in a Detroit burb and my favorite music teacher lived in Canada and would drive the tunnel every day to come teach us. he is one of the very few teachers I vividly remember by name because of how nice he was.

I live on the other side of the state and i see a bunch of Ontario plates at the costco i work at

So many Canadian nurses in the Henry Ford Hospital system too. They took very good care of my father when he had blood cancer. Saved his life.

13

u/Memitim 14d ago

We have a fair number of Canadian flags flying in WNY. I have a lot of Canadian friends, and served with Canadians a long time ago, so these come-lately scumbags betraying our allies in the name of the USA has me frostier than ever.

1

u/natlei 14d ago

Michigan and New York probably are the best friends of Canada out of all the states. (No one really lives in the northern Midwest)

1

u/sadArtax 13d ago

And likewise on the Canadian side. My province borders ND, it's an hour from grand forks to the border then another hour on the Canadian side to Winnipeg, the main city. It's just small towns and farms over that 2hr drive otherwise. That's not to say we didn't use to drive over often, but no more. And the relationship was definitely not like detroit/Windsor where you can literally see one another across the water.

8

u/Hefty_Musician2402 14d ago

TONS of French Canadian families in Maine. You go up northern Maine and every business is “Pelletier’s” or “Bouchard’s” or “Oullette’s.” Hell, even in southern Maine my grandma took her school all in French. Canadians are one of Old Orchard Beach Maine’s biggest customer base

5

u/PabloX68 14d ago

"Canadians are one of Old Orchard Beach Maine’s biggest customer base"

Not anymore.

4

u/Hefty_Musician2402 14d ago

Correct. Now it’ll mostly be massholes

1

u/sadArtax 13d ago

No longer. I saw an interview with the Inn owner there that they've lost like 75% of their business due to the aggression towards Canada.

6

u/BodyPilot2251 14d ago

Washingtonian here, absolutely. We are jokingly referred to as a little piece of Canada as we share lots of commonalities.

2

u/madeleinetwocock 12d ago

Vancouverite here (BC)

Hey neighbour! 🫶🏻

1

u/BodyPilot2251 12d ago

Heck yeah, much love!

2

u/Whippet_yoga 14d ago

We're the only US state with 2 OHL teams.

Kick rocks, hosers.

1

u/CreativelyConsuming 13d ago

I’m literally only American vs Canadian because my Grandparents decided to cross that river in the 1950’s.

2

u/GF_baker_2024 Wayne County 13d ago

I always think of Detroit and Windsor as a shared metro area. They're truly our good neighbors.

1

u/bryan-healey 13d ago

New England loves Canada!

1

u/Warm-Style-1747 11d ago

Minnesota and yes, we love canada. Northern MN by the border is more rural though so there are less living up there in the US

129

u/Puzzlehead-Bed-333 14d ago edited 14d ago

We love our neighbors. The tariffs against them are wrong.

Edit Based on Canadian Response : We as the US, do not want to annex Canada at all. We deeply respect the country and the people, our neighbors, who reside there.

15

u/T0macock 14d ago

I'm from Windsor. Most canadians are bugged by, but not terribly upset by tariffs.

What pisses us off is the threat of annexation and the talk of the "51 state" bullshit.

Please don't devalue our rage by saying it's about one thing when it's very clearly and furiously against another.

3

u/Puzzlehead-Bed-333 14d ago

I’m so sorry. I/We don’t agree with any of this.

8

u/T0macock 14d ago

No need to be sorry. I get what you're after but everything I see from American media correlates our rage with something it isn't.

We have an election going on here and the main issue everyone is campaigning on is Canadian sovereignty.

Do yanks think Canadians are booing the us anthem at hockey games because of a tax? Nah, bro. It's because the safety of our families has been threatened.

Never in my life did I think I'd have to worry about this but all of a sudden everyone is interested in my ability to build drones....

1

u/Puzzlehead-Bed-333 14d ago

I’m so pissed and disheartened by what is going on right now with our allies. This is not what America wanted.

I’m so sorry.

2

u/T0macock 14d ago

Don't be sorry - that's tantamount to thought and prayers. Be mad and be active.

The only thing that will influence these dweebs is instilling fear in their hearts.

Editing the post to reflect this.

1

u/MoltenCorgi 13d ago

None of us actually take his annexation threat seriously over here. It’s so stupid and embarrassing we don’t even want to bring it up. It’s like how he swore he would build a southern border wall and Mexico would pay for it. He accomplished creating a little performative fence that is open on both ends and therefore does nothing and that’s about it. He’s not getting his grubby hands on Canada or Greenland. We aren’t a full dictatorship yet. He would have to get congress to sign off on that and it will never happen.

While this administration does have more teeth than his first go around, I don’t think Canada is in any danger of being annexed and if it came to that, a LOT of Americans would be applying for refugee status so we can fight for you.

I have way more loyalty to Canada than the US. All my non-immediate family live there but I visit more for vacation and recreation than to visit relatives. Everything is better over there, including the snacks. I’m going out of my way to visit Windsor more to spend money there.

Much love to our neighbors!

14

u/Ok-Necessary123 14d ago

Half the people I work with are Canadian. The auto industry is so interconnected we don’t even know or care about the stupid nonsense of the trump administration. Now the wings - leafs on the other hand we take that seriously

1

u/gswane 14d ago

I’d argue that’s absolutely not true with all of the recent layoffs. Ask you Canadian coworkers if they don’t care

4

u/mps 14d ago

A lot of Michigan's thumb eastern border is like that. I live by the other bridge and our communities are linked like separate towns rather than counties. My wife plays hockey in Canada, I have relatives in Ontario, they used to come over and keep our retail alive, and Sarnia has good Indian food. Hell, in elementary school we celebrated Canada Day and would sing their anthem. This entire situation is the dumbest shit.

democrats can’t wait to capture and squander this energy!

u/j_xcal 14d ago

10

u/Remote_Preference 14d ago

It's interesting how Debbie Dingell went off during a town hall attacking a participant asking about Dana Nessel's actions criminalizing campus protests, saying that holding Dana Nessel accountable amounts to a "circular firing squad," but I'm sure she's fine with Slotkin attacking the party's few center-left members like Bernie and AOC.

12

u/week52 14d ago

I wish she fought Trump with the same energy she fights the center-left

2

u/spectre1210 14d ago

Hey look - a conservative-leaning outlet pushing the narrative of Democrat infighting.

Wonder who ultimately benefits from a story like this?

8

u/Far-Fortune2118 14d ago

this isn’t about a political party, it’s about our country, and Canada and our state! What trump is doing is hurting us all!!! unless you’re a billionaire 😯

-5

u/jewham12 14d ago

How does this help Canada, the US or MI at all. Was there a particular thing that was being protested? Who was this message to?

2

u/mingusal 14d ago

It was about annoying you.

u/jewham12 14d ago

No, you are wrong not sure on exact number at the max over there but it was a fairly good turnout.

13

u/camcussion 14d ago

I was at the rally on the Canadian side. There were a lot of people there. My guess is maybe 300 or more. People I know posted pictures and I didn’t even know they were there.

5

u/BullsOnParadeFloats 14d ago

Windsor is literally like the size of Big Rapids. That portion of Ontario is almost exclusively used for agricultural purposes.

11

u/joaoseph 14d ago

The city of Windsor has a population of 236,000. It’s not a small town and it’s a center of the Canadian auto industry and a major manufacturing and trade center for the entire province and Canada. It’s insulting to say Windsor is like “Big Rapids”

4

u/BullsOnParadeFloats 14d ago

I felt comparing it to Warren was doing it a disservice

We love you Canada! 🇨🇦 it’s a long and very remote drive from where I am, but wouldn’t it be cool If as Alaskans we drove to the Canada border just to wave hello and arrange a little protest as well?

-20

u/125acres 14d ago

You do realize what the purpose the tariffs serve?

One is to protect US industries.

An example would be the automotive industry.
What US city would benefit the most from automotive?

15

u/Remote_Preference 14d ago

Making it unprofitable to manufacture cars in Michigan, like these tarrifs do, will pretty much eliminate good paying blue collar jobs in the region.

-1

u/125acres 14d ago

I’m sorry, please explain how you came to this conclusion

→ More replies (5)

3

u/TechnologyRemote7331 14d ago

Tariffs can work if implemented strategically. But the way Trump had been using them is absolutely stupid lol. I mean, he’s put tariffs on the parts to BUILD cars, not just the cars themselves. That fucks with our ability to MAKE the damn things, driving up costs, and generally ceding markets to foreign car companies. Also, auto industy isn’t gonna spend billions of dollars to bring manufacturing to the States where labor is expensive and it will take YEARS to build enough factories to make up for the ones they left behind overseas. Those kinds of industries don’t just pop up overnight, you know. It makes no goddamn sense, and the auto industry has said as much. Trump lied to you, man. His tariffs aren’t helping anyone, and he’s too stubborn and dumb to admit it.

Here’s some reading, if you like.

2

u/125acres 13d ago

I disagree, but at least you have an actual an argument why they will not work.

I believe and already seen a huge ( verbally) investment into the US. The foreign automakers have to bring more manufacturing into the US to competes with the tariffs.

If Canada removes their Tariffs on US goods, US will remove ours. They aren’t going to because it’s their revenue stream in more ways than one.

If the tariffs work and I think they will, we could see an economic boom on gigantic proportions.

We saw US towns completely wiped out when they when automotive moved manufacturing to Mexico. Generations of families gone.

Look at other manufacturing that have left the country and went to china. All that is going to come back because of the tariffs.

Next month we will see.

0

u/mxjxs91 14d ago

Ah yes, benefit them by raising prices on parts needed to build cars, therefore increasing prices on cars that people already can't afford, leading to layoffs.

Link

0

u/lilly_kilgore 14d ago

The trouble with tariffs, to be succinct, is that they raise prices, slow economic growth, cut profits, increase unemployment, worsen inequality, diminish productivity and increase global tensions. Other than that, they’re fine.

Look at all the change from one gathering....

14

u/Remote_Preference 14d ago

Should Americans simply accept Trump destroying our country without any resistance? Seems cowardly. Even if the protests don't stop the fascist takeover, at least the people participating will be able to live with themselves once the regime falls.

u/wellrolloneup 14d ago

Lost 2 brothers a dad and a nephew in the last few years....all this shit going on in the world don't matter...doesn't...spend time with your family cause that all that will care that you're gone....all that protest shit don't matter....how's your relationshio with your kids / parents??? First, I am sorry you had to experience so much loss in such a short time. My heart truly goes out to you.

Secondly, it may not matter to you, but there are many people in Michigan (including me) who have family on both sides of the border. If myself and others aren't willing to stand up, what then? If they were to close the border, I just don't get to spend time with family anymore? How is that even okay?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/jewham12 14d ago

What is this resisting though? It’s just a bunch of people wanting to feel good about not really doing anything? What are they actually protesting? Who was supposed to take notice? Did they notice?

5

u/Remote_Preference 14d ago

OP posted a link with the details: https://www.freep.com/story/news/politics/2025/03/22/protesters-in-canada-and-the-us-express-fear-distrust-in-trump/82613494007/

Obviously, though, if you value freedom and believe all human life has inherent value and dignity, you'd be on the streets already! Don't let the magas scare you into silence!

1

u/jewham12 14d ago

Right, and the article says it’s a protest for their displeasure with Trump, then went on to list like 10 things. They didn’t shut anything down, there wasn’t a clear message, just “here’s a couple hundred people that are angry” at the president for myriad reasons.

Was he in a meeting at the RenCen or something where he might even notice this? I’m not going to waste my time protesting nothing.

1

u/Remote_Preference 14d ago

Staying silent isn't going to protect you.

Get involved in organizing the protests if you think you have productive ideas to make them more effective, but just know that protesting probably isn't going to stop the fascism, it just means you actually faught and gave it all you can.

If you survive the regime, at least when it falls you can live with yourself knowing you didn't roll over and cower in fear.

1

u/jewham12 14d ago

Neither is this. This was a big display of nothing. An ineffective left meeting.

1

u/Remote_Preference 14d ago

What are you doing to fight this regime? It seems like you're wasting energy that could be used to resist fascism by criticizing people doing the only thing they can to stand up for themselves.

2

u/jewham12 14d ago

I’m voting for people that I think would be effective leaders in things I believe in on both a local and national level. I’m also leaving voicemails, texts and emails with my elected officials and engaging with them, not shouting into the void about everything and nothing.

2

u/Remote_Preference 14d ago

So you're shouting into the void instead of putting up a fight.

Stop letting the magas scare you into silence.
