Talk Detroit Midtown landlords to avoid?

Hi y’all. My girlfriend and I are scoping our midtown for a decent 1 or 2 bed apartment with a max of $1500 (yes I know that’s playing on hard mode). We already know to avoid Friedman and Golden. Are there any other landlords or buildings to avoid like the plague? Are there any that folks like and would recommend?

Also, has anyone heard of Midtown Detroit Apartments managed by Judy Pruss? Their generic ass name made finding info on them tough and i couldn’t find any credible reviews.

Thanks!

“Officials estimate a cross-border ridership of some 66,500 in 2029, which would be the first year the connector would be in operation, under the most current timeframe. The October presentation expects things like environmental clearance to take place this year, and to start finalizing funding and final design throughout next year. Construction would begin in 2027. “

Talk Detroit Update: I created an app that tracks the most recent Detroit 911 calls and crime reports

Post image
88 Upvotes

To everyone who provided meaningful feedback — thank you!

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been implementing many of the features you requested to help anyone understand the criminal activity in Detroit neighborhoods.

I’m also in contact with Detroit’s Crime Intelligence Bureau to get more clarity on what the 911 call descriptions actually mean.

You can preview the live site below. Please note that the updates shown in the screenshot are still being finalized and are not yet live on the site.

Feel free to leave any feedback!

Here’s what I’m currently working on:

  • A crime heat map showing the number of 911 calls by hour, based on neighborhood and ZIP code
  • An additional UI displaying the number of violent crimes, sexual crimes, and EMS travel times
  • A pie chart categorizing crime reports based on 911 calls made in a specific neighborhood
  • A dashboard showing overall EMS performance across Detroit
  • A better interactive map that categorizes crimes by color, with additional crime details available on click

Thanks again for all your support — more updates coming soon!

Talk Detroit Desperate NEZ help!

I am interested in a condo that is listed as an NEZ qualified property on the map online. The current owners don’t live there as their primary residence so it is considered “non homestead” and they are paying normal taxes. If I buy the condo, will I be able to apply for NEZ if it my primary residence? I see the duration of 15 years for NEZ properties and it’s confusing to me. Is this a one and done thing? Will I be able to have the abatement? I tried called my agent and the tax assessor office and can’t seem to get help. I hope someone out there can help me before I make a mistake.

Talk Detroit Heart Health Screening (free) with free gift card

A research company is offering a free cardiovascular screening April 7-9 in Warren (Desi Hall). They will give you a VISA gift card for participating, and the test only takes 5-10 minutes. Plus, you’ll get knowledge of your heart health you probably wouldn’t get at a doctor using traditional tests.

Why is this test different? Most doctors only perform lipid panels to assess cardiovascular health. This test includes a standard lipid panel, plus lp(a) testing, HbA1c testing, hsCRP testing, and eGFR testing.

  • lp(a) is a type of LDL that is particularly potent at driving cardiovascular disease. Very few people get tested because it’s expensive, even though ~20% of Americans have genetically high levels. The good news is you only need to get this test once in your life.

  • HbA1c measures blood sugars over the past 3 months, and is the gold standard for assessing diabetes.

  • hsCRP tests for subtle inflammation that can drive cardiovascular disease.

  • eGFR measures kidney function.

All of this is free and takes 5-10 minutes. This knowledge could help save your life or prevent you from having a heart attack, stroke, hearing loss (from blood vessel damage), erectile dysfunction, kidney damage (from blood vessel damage), vision loss, and many more things. Plus you’re helping research be conducted that can lead to treatment for millions of people.

Additionally, you’ll get a VISA gift card for $45 that can be used at any store. I’ll post the link below. Message me if you have questions.

I got the test done yesterday and it was a piece of cake. You do not need to fast. Just show up.

Transit How bad is traffic on a Sunday from Detroit Downtown to Belle Isle at 1PM?

Hi I’m getting married in Detroit this summer end of July. We’ll be getting ready in downtown, Belle Isle is only 15’ away according to gps, but it’s the weekend :( I thought it’d be pretty to do the first look or at least take group pics there before my Catholic ceremony at 3PM. How long does it take to get there and is it crowded on a Sunday?

If this is not a good idea, could anyone suggest anywhere that would be good for photos? TIA!

Food/Drink Fun Bars/Clubs IN Detroit not Metro!

Hey all! My friend and I are looking for some fun night life to explore in Detroit proper. I've been to UFO, Marble, and that's fun BUTTT she's more of a mainstream girl and looking for pop, rap, etc. Think Tin Roof (groan, I know) but we're in our early 20's and just want shitty cheap drinks & mainstream music lol. Thanks in advance :)))

Food/Drink Sandwich house?

Help me out: there once was a sandwich situation, somewhere not too far north of 8 mile in a neighborhood of modest homes. In my memory this was a cash only, lunch meat heavy, blue collar spectacle. I remember it being busy. I have a fuzzy memory of this being inside of a house. Fuzzy. Circa 2010.

Very thick sandwiches, made on the spot, simple / unbranded packaging.

Where is this place?? Please and thanks!

My boyfriend attended a beer event a few years ago for the belle isle boat house and he received a pint glass at the event. Our cat recently broke said pint glass and I'm trying to track down a replacement for him. Does anyone have one they are willing to part with ? Or does anyone have any leads on where I can try to find one ? I believe it looked like this picture
