They’re actually total cowards. My friend relocates snakes and says they’re the easiest to move. Studies have found they do their very best not to bite with a 36% bite chance, even after being stood next to, stepped on, and picked up! None of the cottonmouths bit when stood next to! There’s a YouTube video of a guy basically harassing dozens of cottonmouths to try and test their aggression. None of them bit until he literally put his boot in its mouth.
That doesn’t sound “super aggressive” to me
Of course, the best way to get bit by a snake is by harassing it so leave them the fuck alone, but no need to fear monger.
Not fear mongering. I respect snakes and just stay away from them. My husbands family had property by the Guadalupe River in Tx and he warned me about the cottonmouths. I was right by the edge of the river and a cottonmouth swam towards me so I turned away and left in a hurry. I don’t think I ever ran so fast. Maybe it was more in defensive mode but it worked! I got the heck out of there! Same goes with any snake.
That’s not aggression or even defensiveness. It just happened to be moving in your direction. If there was a trail of ants and you walked through it, they wouldn’t be chasing you, right?
Comparing a snake to ants…really? Were you there with me no. Maybe it was on the defense because the river is a busy place and it was busy. Maybe it was agitated…I wasn’t going to stick around and find out. Have a nice day!
They’re both animals. Neither are aggressive. Both were minding their own business. Snakes don’t chase, this is a well known fact in the snake community. I’ve given you plenty of proof, I can even link scientific studies that prove this, your experience is anecdotal and it might not have even been a cottonmouth. Maybe write a paper about your experience, get it peer reviewed and published. You’ll be famous.
