GEAR NGD! Fender Yngwie Malmsteen MN VW Stratocaster

Hello everyone!

A few months ago I finally pulled the trigger and bought my dream guitar: the Yngwie Malmsteen signature Strat (made in USA)!

I got it off Thomann, so it came with a vintage Fender tweed hardcase, Fender cable, Straploks and (the best part) a Fender leopard print guitar strap!

QUESTION How would you get this guitar tone?

Thumbnail youtu.be

The song Eden by Ben Khan (or any of his songs really) he has this harsh break up tone. You can hear it around the twenty-two second mark. I’m trying to get this tone digitally, I have an amp but I am trying to record DI (I live in an apartment!). I use Logic, and I also have the Tim Henson and Cory Wong neural dsp’s.

QUESTION Broke my string and I’m out of town, came up with a unique solution but worried

Post image

I’m currently out of town with my Taylor GS Mini and ran into an issue: I snapped my G string. However, it broke in such a way that the remaining piece still reaches the lower tuning pegs. So, I decided to get creative:

  • I used the High E tuning peg (the lowest peg) to attach the broken G string.
  • Then, I replaced the G string with the B string and swapped the B string for the E string.

The result is a much warmer sound with a bit less high-end sparkle, but I’m wondering if this might cause any tension issues that could potentially harm my guitar’s neck or overall setup. Has anyone tried something similar? Am I risking long-term damage?

Would appreciate any advice or thoughts.

QUESTION Help, Body ID?? What pickguard?

Anybody have any idea what this body is from/for? It's an odd one. Strat and Ibanez pickguards I have on hand come nowhere near fitting, both hang off the side and are just clearly not for whatever this is. Also every neck I have except one puts it at a roughly 24.5" scale. The one and only 24 fret neck I have gets it's to 25.5 No pickguard holes are drilled, I'm guessing this was never built up. Any clue what it's patterned after? It has a weird little almost Iceman-ish stubby on the bottom and has a 9v box routed.

Picked up an early 90s ST-62 Fujigen strat (from my birth-year). I've been through dozens of guitars but this is the first that I'm confident I'll have for life. Thanks for listening!

GEAR Best Schecter to buy nowadays?

I'm generally new to buying guitars (I've really only played an unnamed acoustic and a used strat) and now I'm looking to invest in a Schecter as my main guitar. I usually play stuff from Avenged Sevenfold, Dream Theater, Pantera, any kind of metal really and I hear Schecter is one of the best in the game for the genre. Any recommendations? (I am willing to pay up to a little more than a grand)

NEWBIE How to get better at chord changes

So I am sort of new to playing the guitar. I learned a bunch of chords and the minor pentatonic. But when it comes to playing actual songs I’m so slow at switching chords. Does anyone have any recommendations to get better at that. I am fully YouTube taught. So I kinda just need some guidance.

QUESTION PureSalem Bette Experience?

Hard to find much on the Pure Salem band and their tele-style Bette. Anyone who owns one or has owned one with a view on the quality? How would it compare with a MIM Fender Tele?

Also what pickups are in it? Their website has the below, but not sure what a Filtron style is? Filter'tron a la Gertsch or smth else?

  • Custom Wound to vintage specs single coil pickup in neck
  • Custom Wound Filtron Style in Bridge

I'm a lefty so I don't have much choice, and these guitars look pretty so I'm curious!

QUESTION Best studio monitors for casual home use

My son plays a Gretsch hollow body. He is by no means a virtuoso and doesn't have an audiophile's ear. Just plays around for fun. I got him a Nux MG thirty distortion box that he's been having a blast with. I'd like to get him some studio monitors and have a two to three hundo budget. Any suggestions? TIA

QUESTION Hand placement question

I’m just starting to take guitar seriously, I consider myself a campfire guitarist as of now. I thought I was doing chords good, but recently I’ve noticed a lot of comments here talking about how the thumb only needs to touch the neck. The way I learned to do chords with muted bass strings was to wrap my hand around the whole neck and touch the strings with my thumb. This technique has worked ok for me for the most part, sometimes I’ll accidentally mute the high e also but the chords still sound ok. My question is should I learn how to do it the “proper” way or is it ok to keep doing what works?
