There Innate Qi, Cultivated Qi, and Understanding/enlightenment.
Innate Qi is Lifeforce. Can be expanded or not depending on story/cultivation method/Medicine Quality etc.
Cultivated Qi is usually breathing in natural qi from your surroundings and exhaling impurities. Maybe you move it in patterns in your body, maybe you recite a saying, it varies.
Enlightenment is a Deus Ex Machina that can do pretty much anything. Break a limit in cultivation? Enlightenment. Heal a serious injury? Enlightenment. Have a new energy entirely like "sword intent"? Enlightenment.
Those are the things make the majority of all cultivation.
Some exceptions apply like this one story I read about the Heavenly Demon being sealed for 2000 years and everyone has impalnted Qi cores made out of tech.
