In retrospect I can see a couple getting put down once the new-ness wears off. I remember when Radobaan was first revealed people were loving the Edgy Uragaan and the way it could spin like a beyblade and now it's kind of considered meh?
Hirabami I can see getting some dislike. The niche of being a flying Leviathan is cool, but in a game where Rathalos finally stuck a balance of being aerial-focused whilst staying on the ground it's a bit noticeable that Hirabami takes the old route of never landing and your only damage windows are when it falls out of the sky.

u/pamafa3 "Keep calm & Lv.3 charge" Mar 08 '25
Tbf Hirabami's tail can almost always be hit from the ground
59
u/SillyBilly55558 29d ago
Yeah I'm hitting its tail with my stubby SnS, it's fine.
Frankly Hirabami is too pathetic for people to complain about it, I think
19
u/Technical_Ad579 29d ago
I fought three of them at once with no dung pods. I think they’re pushovers. IMO
11
u/SlimyRedditor621 29d ago
the jank of the story quest you fight hirabami in annoys me more than the actual monster. I basically had to deal with the dung pod slinger tutorial on my screen for the whole fight and basically ignored the hirabami that kept reappearing after I fired dung pods off.

I still confuse Uragaan and Radobaan to this day
Hirabami is kinda plain, the fight is decent but i'm a IG main so i helicopter to victory, i see him as an easy rathalos cause in my experience rathalos touches grass like 20% of the time

Gypceros and Kutku are such weird additions to add as high rank monsters. They're some of the very first wyverns you fight in monst games so they're not really supposed to feel quite as elaborate. They're good monsters, but their role feels diminished seeing them so late in the game if that makes sense.
Also, i'm very old so i'm nostalgic and biased towards them.
52
u/8bitzombi Mar 07 '25
I get the feeling that they were originally intended to be LR introductions, but at some point the devs realized the LR story was going to go on too long so they threw them in HR instead.
The Kutku mission especially felt like it was supposed to happen as soon as we showed up in the forest.
→ More replies (1)74
u/NK1337 Mar 08 '25
I kinda like the contrast a bit because it was the first mission after you dealt with a huge calamity, so it had this nice light heartedness to it that gave it an air of reprieve after the fact.
21
u/NK1337 Mar 08 '25
I forgot how much of a love hate relationship I had with the kut ku. On the one hand it’s such a funny looking chicken and I have sense of nostalgia for it since it was the first “wall” I hit back during the OG monster hunter.
On the other hand, fuck that bald parrot and its fucking running back and forth across the entire zone. It’s gives me pre-patch Elden beast rage having to fight it and chase it down.

u/lustywoodelfmaid Mar 07 '25
Absolutely top tier. The best starting roster. Sad to have absolutely no Elder Dragons but... Jin Dahaad is basically an Elder, Arkveld is Elder equivalent, Gore Magala is Demi-Elder.
The one thing I'm gonna say is: at least this game, unlike Rise, actually finished its main story before putting out Free Title Updates. Nobody used Narwa or Ibushi gear and so the best sets were Rajang, Rathalos and a couple others. And I hate that it was Teostra and Kushala that had to return. Just because you have Chameleos doesn't mean he needs to have his weirdly similar-shape cousins. They had the chance to be unique there and dropped it.
Wilds had succeeded here with the roster, having a wide variety of interesting monsters, and more on the way. Mizutsune is a very nice one to have back, I'm sure he'll be somewhat challenging.
I'm hoping for a Snake Wyvern to come and one cool siege monster. Nothing like Zorah. I feel like a modern recreation of Lao Shan Lung would go hard. Make it a Guardian Lao Shan Lung, why not?
9
u/Validated_Owl Mar 08 '25
Give us a fully redone, PROPER Dalamadur fight!!! Already have lots of 4U nostalgia going on, give us a multi-stage set piece battle against snakey boy
9
u/lustywoodelfmaid Mar 08 '25
I'm more partial to Nakarkos. I love Dalamadur but Nakarkos is so unique in so many ways. But let's be honest, we need Gog.
2
u/Khar-Selim CHARGE BLADES ON MOTORCYCLES 29d ago
gog should be in the expansion
4
u/lustywoodelfmaid 29d ago
Absolutely. Or even a more powerful variant of Gog. Oilwell is like the Fountain of Youth for Gog, he's got infinite food and I bet he'd gobble up Nu Udra in about 3 bites.
2
u/Dylangillian 29d ago
Isn't Gog just too big for that area though? Like, he's a giant flying wyvern, we'd have to get a specific arena for him.
2
u/lustywoodelfmaid 29d ago
The outdoor areas are all big enough for him and he's not like a flying wyvern, he's more Fatalis-shaped with a long snout and a dragonator going through his chest.

While I do like the apex monsters, they absolutely do not feel like Elder Dragons and I dislike this.
Elders are calamities and each have their own mechanics to work with/around and unique attacks. I hate fighting Kushala but at least it's memorable, same with Teostra's supernova or Nergigante's dive bomb.
Apex Monsters? None of them have unique mechanics to disable or engage with throughout the fight, Rey Dau is the closest to have his "Supernova" type of attack, except he has the aim of your average Valorant player, Uth Duna's strongest attack is a fucking slow-mo belly flop, Nu Udra just tosses a few small bombs around him and Jin Dahaad is the closest to an Elder but is more reminiscent of an event quest because of the 3 stage setup.
I feel like with how "simple" apex are, I never felt like I was in endgame proper until Gore and Arkveld, and even then the latter is just a strong monster and doesn't really have any mechanics so he barely classifies as an Elder in my mind.
Say what you want about the actual fights, but it's undeniable that Elders usually mark a shift in endgame fights in previous games and that matters. Hope we'll see something like that in Wilds soon.
→ More replies (3)10
u/lustywoodelfmaid 29d ago
I've gotta disagree about the lack of engaging mechanics in some cases. Elder Dragons from World had one main mechanic or type of attack. Teostra and Kushala were probably the most notable in this way because of their fire/blast and wind auras and how Teostra switches 'modes' after his super attack.
But its remiss to ignore Uth Duna's wave-making which, in my opinion, is better than Namielle's waves. And with Rey Dau, you're mostly right except when he gets to his crystal nest, every lightning attack or wing attack sends multiple electrical explosions throughout the area, punishing counter attacks and hyper-armor users.
And you can't just discount Jin Dahaad when he's Kulve Taroth-sized and has a more engaging super attack than Safi Jiva. He's not as difficult, no, but he has the ethereal and powerful effect of an Elder Dragon. I mean, dude can spiderman crawl by freezing the ground he walks on passively which, instead of making him slip, makes it easier for him to grip. I'm honestly surprised he's not classed as an Elder Dragon.
Nu Udra is fair, though. He's not Elder material at all but he's a hell of a spectacle.
When you said that these aren't calamities, consider that these four Apexes also assist the artificial weather in becoming catastrophic. Rey Dau was making an entire desert uninhabitable, Uth Duna was going to kill an entire jungle/forest by drowning it, Nu Udra makes the heat so intense that even a fire-based creature can feel the intensity in a bad way. And Jin Dahaad is assisting with a constant blizzard so intense it can carry a virus on the winds.

Anyone know if there is a way to consistently proc a clash, been using S&S for a while now and it seems to only ever happen at random. I thought it was just perfect guarding a bite or similar attack but it rarely happens at all and I can't figure out why.
14
9
u/Funkmaster_General 29d ago
You need to perfect block specific attacks. The first or second time you do it, a clash will happen, but the monster gains resistance to it, and it takes more perfect guards each time, exactly like mounting.
4
2
u/EmergencyLow887 28d ago
Basically think of it as a status build up and every perfect guard builds a certain amount. First clash is at 3 guards and the next is at 27(or 27 later so 30 total, cant remember top of my head)
13
u/ImaSnapSomeNecks 29d ago
Little known fact, if you stay on the ground you’re actually invincible until you stand up. So the sooner you get up, the sooner the monster can damage you again. I sometimes stay on the ground as long as the game lets me.

u/GeneralSweetz 29d ago
I've been fireblasted while on the ground. I thought the same but monsters like arcveld have punished me for it

When to get up is part of learning a monster's moveset to me. I ain't gonna play perfectly. I'm gonna take a hit because I stand in that monster's business.
Rajang is the one who really taught me that strategy. Crackhead does a 32 Exploding Palm combo and playing opossum is the only way to avoid getting smacked mid-combo.

Now I'm wondering if I'm not the sidekick to my Palico. During the last Arkveld fight I was running for my life chugging a 6 pack of mega health pots after taking a bunch of tentacles to the face like a bad hentai when I turned around and saw my Palico straight up solo tanking the damn monster.
3
u/Nazenn 29d ago
Dude my Palico has saved my ass by pulling aggro so many times. The monsters in Wilds are bloody aggressive when they want to be, even more so than World it feels like, and there's a few fights I know I wouldn't have made it through without my cat (Red Panda actually haha) holding his own against incredible monsters. I want to learn to truely solo the Arkvald fight because I love it but bloody hell, I am definitely the sidekick sometimes even if he is still carrying a LR weapon haha

How often do you have to block with the greatsword to get a clash? Is it generally worth to try and build for one or is the sharpness loss too problematic?
I usually only used the block if unavoidable in the older games, but I'm questioning if with protective polish it might become a valid strategy.

Using guard at exactly the right moment will trigger a perfect guard which neutralizes all damage and stamina loss from the attack and can cause a power clash (as shown). Clash builds up like other status effects so you will trigger it once very easily and a 2nd time only after a lot more perfect guards.
