Discussion Whats everyone's opinion on gravios?
I hear alot of people say he's annoying to fight because he bounces off constantly. But to me he's always been a fun fight especially now with wilds allowing me to block his beams. To me he really feels like a titanic fight. But what are your thoughts?
1.2k
u/DegenerateCrocodile 10d ago
As of Wilds, more enjoyable than Basarios.
313
u/user-nt 10d ago
Yeah, I enjoy fighting it more than basarios,
Basarios felt more bouncy and constantly dug around, so it wasn't a hard fight, just a very annoying one

u/Administrative-Stop5 10d ago
That is why GL reigns supreme. Bouce? Hitzone? Those words are not in our vocabulary

u/user-nt 10d ago
Un-ironically, it was fighting basarios with GL that made me wanna learn it and it's my second main with LS
11
u/SteveoberlordEU 10d ago
Yeah same with Gravios, the ls keeps bouncing of so i tried the boom stick as a second main. Only changed with 4th gen when my love CB arived.

Tbf spirit slashes can't bounce, so charged spirit slash until red and then spam rt

You ever fight Ruby Basarios? Because that one is even more annoying with its red crystals flyin' at you, when you're just trying to sharpen in peace.

Hunting Horns never bounce!*
(*If you keep Self Improvement active)
4
u/Elementual 9d ago
Wait, that's one of its effects?! I use the hunting horn occasionally and didn't know that!
5
u/JPSeason ALBA GU BRATH 9d ago
Yup
If I recall correctly, it basically gives you unsheathed speed boost and Mind’s Eye. Not 100% sure if it provides an attack boost though.
2
u/Elementual 9d ago
Well dang. Gonna add that to my list of weapons to use if I'm in need of some easy mind's eye without decos. Though I've barely had run ins with bouncing in Wilds thus far.
2
u/JPSeason ALBA GU BRATH 9d ago
Just wait until Rajang divebombs into the arena. It’s so nice not to bounce off the forearms.
2
u/Elementual 9d ago
I remember that being pretty annoying in the last two games with how small that monkey is -___-

He grew on me over time in the earlier games. But now he optimizes a walking fortress that shrugs weak blows. He sounds old and rocky. Other monsters can not seriously contend with him due to his sheer defense and bulk

u/GarugaEnthusiast 10d ago
If memory serves correctly, the only known predator to Gravios, is Akantor. That's it, nothing else, not even Deviljho, tries to mess with it.
102
u/Stylin8888 10d ago
It’s worth noting Yian Garuga and Gravios are kinda comparable…so if anything…Akantor definitely is doing better than Jho in hunting higher end apex monsters.
101
25
11
u/OceussRuler 10d ago
Akantor and Ukanlos are on a the highest height of the wyverns, and are probably dangerous even for the regular elders.
Gravios was during FU considered to be Rajang and Kirin tier. The hippopotamus or elephant of MH sort of. Considering how easily an Akantor can hunt one, it says a lot about the power of those god wyverns.
No doubt Akantor tear apart Jho. The best weapon of the pickle is raw strength and Akantor is simply even stronger and bulkier.

Akantor and Ukanlos are above the regular EDs like the trio, Nerg, etc.

No one fucks with Garuga. And I mean no one. He's not that strong. Heck he's weaker than his weight class. But if you try to fuck around with him, you are certain to find out.
51
u/Matasa89 10d ago
He's like a chihuahua. Smaller and weaker than the big boys, but watch out for that pure distilled hatred - that bird is coming for you, and it will enjoy every bit of pain and suffering it can inflict on you.
19
u/NigeroMinna 10d ago
Absolutely. And no one really wants to fight a chihuahua no matter how wild or deranged they are.

Honey badger energy. Become so much of a problem that predators just stop considering you prey.

What do yall mean by “bouncy?”
95
u/Karoliskltt 10d ago
Think jhin dahaads ridges for example, you start hitting it interrupts your combo does 1 damage and just leaves you there like 👁👄👁
63
u/octaffle 10d ago
If the monster's body is harder than your weapon is sharp, the weapon bounces off doing miniscule damage. Bouncing eats sharpness and has a delay before you can attack again.
Not many parts cause weapons to bounce in Wilds.

u/Saumfar 10d ago
It kinda sucks that there's not any hard monsters in Wilds, tbh.
Only Gravios and Jin Dahaad makes one bounce in Wilds. I really wish fights had more nuance. Statuses are basically gone, no weapon bounces at all.
As a SnS player, my biggest problem is other players making me flinch...

It's the streamlining of MH. They don't like at all to create monsters people will hate. I liked the need of adaptation before, like getting the skill to ignore bouncing or playing ranged against Gravios but it's not how MH is made nowadays, for the best or worst.

He's fun, but his armor set sucks imo
81
u/kyuuri117 10d ago edited 10d ago
I saw in the lance discord that apparently what his armor set says it does, and what his armor set actually does, are two different things. Apparently it does something like completely negate damage if the damage you would take is less than 5 or 10% of your remaining health, depending on 2/4 piece bonus. Or something like that.
And the reason that might be useful, is because of the chip damage you take when you block with a shield. So if you've got the gravios 2 piece and block, and the chip damage that bleeds through would be less than 5% of your total health, it just does 0 chip damage instead.
So if that's the case, and I have no reason to believe they were lying since that's easily tested, it's actually a pretty interesting set.
Unless you were talking about how the armor set looks. In which case yea it's awful.
53
u/Eyyy354 10d ago
Yeah sorry I meant the look of it, but that sound interesting since I do main charge blade so that'll be a set for me to try out once I cover it up dx
10
9
u/gloomplant 10d ago
Wait, for real? I had been trying to find armor sets that fit both lance and hbg. This might be worth a try.

Holy mother of typos, that's HUGE. There's a big difference between that and the written words. I'm going to go test that out later.
3
u/ravstar52 The wall 9d ago edited 9d ago
So, i've done some testing, /u/kyuuri117, and i don't think that user was correct. Or rather, I think they've been mislead in their testing.
With Lance (and probably other weapons) you already take 0 damage if you block and you get the little shield slap animation. if you get slapped with a heavy attack, your hunter gets a little flattened by their shield and slides backwards (Knockback state). and if you get slapped with a very heavy attack, or have low stamina and block anyway, you get guard crushed and just eat it with your face.
Gravios armour only triggers at max HP, does not nullify the chip, and basically actually does work as written. it does not nullify chip with attacks that put you in the knockback state, does not nullify damage taken when guard crushed, and does not nullify damage taken directly to the face. The only time it helps is when, as the skill suggests, you get hit when you have Peak Performance active.
Edit: This is actually really really easy to test.
- Equip 2pc / 4pc gravios (i doubt it matters). Make sure you have at least 1 point of peak performance.
- Grab a lance with 0 guard and 0 Guard up levels.
- Go to the training room.
- Set the dummy to "Smash mode", "Normal", and "strength 1 star"
- get hit. to the face. sheathed lance, ideally.
- note how you take, like, no damage. Note the skill procs. note that peak performance wears off.
- Get hit again. note the damage is almost (but not quite) the same.
- get hit a third time. Note the damage is the same as the 2nd. (This proves that the gravios set bonus actually does do something.)
- go to the tent. Make no changes and Leave the tent. (this maxes your HP, stamina, and sharpness. yes, it does this in the rest of the game too. really neat trick.)
- now, unsheath the lance and block.
- Note you get put into the knockback state, but still take chip damage. Note that Peak performance wears off and the set bonus skill activates.
- block a few more attacks. note that from the 2nd onwards, they all do the same damage.
- go to the tent. equip a single point of guard (or switch to a lance that has 1 point of guard). Leave the tent.
- go block the attack. Note that you do the auto shield bash. Note that peak performance does not deactivate. note that the gravios set bonus does not activate.
- Go to the tent. Remove all the armour you're wearing.
- go block an attack again. note you still take no chip damage.
Edit 2: reading the user's chatlogs, they were also using arkveld's hunger. I suspect that was topping them back up for the minute chip damage they were taking. To which i say: just run 4pc arkveld hunger then. duh.
3
u/kyuuri117 9d ago
That's pretty disappoint tbh, not sure why they would be spreading misinformation in the discord. The two people talking about it were pretty clear it was working the way I described in my comment. They weren't trying to convince anyone else, they were just discussing with each other how to make the build better because it worked the way they had described.

Hope they push the boat out with black gravios having him beam more and vent the heat out.
Currently gravios is fun but a little too sluggish and once that belly breaks you do numbers to him so having it maybe like jet more flame from their and only lose it after beaming could be neat so you dont just park in the one spot.

I have never played any other MH title other than a tiny bit of the beginning area in rise. At first I thought his fight was annoying but that is partly due to the camera angle slightly fucking me every time because it is hard to tell when he is about to charge forward while I am under him and just me not knowing his patterns yet as a new player. But although that is still a problem sometimes I actually like that we have to break through his armor to deal real damage to him. It makes him feel extremely tanky. And I love that even though he has wings the most he can do with them is hover for a second and follow up by dropping his ass on us like an old WWE wrestler 😂

I hate it because it's a boring fight, not because I bounce (IG and CB almost never bounce).
He has no interesting attack patterns like Gore, or fun movement like Arkveld or Doggo, or interesting "mechanics" like Uth Duna or Jin Dahaad
He's just a big bag of health that you can't even fully damage because he's got armor everywhere. I'm pretty sure he's my least fought monster across the whole series
