How do you differentiate? Aren't you just as guilty of assuming they're drag queens instead of "poorly passing" transwomen?
Further, why the fuck do you care? Why are you so intent on being offended for this person when there's no evidence you should be offended for this person?
How can you not differentiate between a regular trans person and a drag queen? I'm no expert but usually drag queens dress very over the top and also go extremely heavy on make-up.
I'll give you that it's a good guess. But it's still a guess.
I think the point here is that it was kind of stupid to have this conversation in the first place. We don't know who this person is. So it's kind of dumb to try and police whether someone else refers to them as a drag queen or as she.
Drag queens are usually men who dress up for fun and to put on a show. Trans women just want to, you know, be women, rather than be a show, so they don't usually dress like this because women (which they are a subset of) don't.
Trans women are women, so they're going to dress like women. Drag queens mostly aren't women, so they dress like a caricature of womanhood because that's just the thing they do.
It’s less risky to assume that than it is to assume a trans person is just wearing drag. I think hearing that would fuck their day up pretty bad. But you know what they say about assumptions

I’m worried about the creep taking pictures of women on the subway!
