It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.

1.1k Upvotes

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.

If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.

It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.

Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY

Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.

Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

Success Natural my entire life (20). Shaved head once (1st pic), kept it short (2)Finally letting it grow(3 )

A few things I have learned: 1. Shaving my head changed my relationship with hair completely. It’s a beautiful experience. I shaved mine because I was tired of feeling like I was only beautiful because of the length of my hair.

  1. No creams and no oils method works FOR ME. It’s almost like a cleanse. I will do it every other quarter. Some say it doesn’t work, and makes their hair more dry. In my experience it takes at least a month for my hair to adjust to the change. Then it flourishes.

  2. There are only a few ways for ME to get more length. Trim. I don’t search for the magical growth serum, I search on how to retain length. Measure how much breakage I have, set a goal to reduce the amount and strive for it.

  3. My routine: wash every week, twist out one week, up do the next week, braid out the last. Fall & spring= natural, Winter= straight, summer= mini twist/ braids. I leave the sew ins and wigs alone. Just don’t feel like understanding that world lol. I’m also worried I’ll become dependent on them and start hating my natural hair.

  4. Wash days doesn’t take a whole day. At least for me. It take 2-4 hours at the most. Twist out= ~16 twist, braid out= ~ 8 braids.

  5. I am most beautiful when I am confident in my natural hair. Not my braids, not my puff, not my wash in go. When I accept how my hair looks with not one product or manipulation that Is when I look most beautiful. When I let my hair be free, is when I feel free, it is when I am most beautiful, and everyone around thinks so too, because I act like I am.

Success Beauty pageant with only natural hair

The Miss Ivory Coast competition has banned extensions and wigs. It’s nice to see a beauty pageant where natural hair is celebrated and sends the message of natural hair being beautiful. In most black beauty pageants you’d see a minority of people who wear their natural hair and they’re unlikely to win as well.

Just a little rant. I love my natural Fro and I think it’s absolutely beautiful in its raw form, no products, no curling creams. I went out with it in a high puff yesterday and there were these guys laughing at me. I heard one of them say “she looks funny” lol. )and they were black too.) I really hate how Afros are still mocked by a lot of our people! I noticed some people are natural hair lovers only when it’s curled and slicked down with a bunch of products sigh…. In 2025, this is so sad that we’re still dealing with self hate.

Need Advice Trying to adapt with medium braids

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hello,

After having a hard trying adapting with mini twits, I stayed a while without protective style - and a result I got a lot of fairy knots and few length retention. It always happens with me after I achieve certain length.

Yesterday, I made medium size braids with my own hair. But I think I look childish with them and my hair loses so much volume (I have a big afro).

Any tips to improve the aspects of medium size braids? Or maybe a recommendation of other braid style I can do with my own hair?

I seen that most people here wash their hair 2-3 times per week, is this with shampoo and conditioner every time?? Which shampoo, conditioner and leave-ins would y’all recommend ? Should I be doing hair masks?? ( I don’t even know what those are exactly lmfao ) My hair and scalp are super dry and I’ve been experiencing breakage🥲 This whole time I thought once or twice a month was enough for a wash😬 I don’t have a black influence in my life so if you have any tips, tricks or product suggestions please let me know!

I’ve been natural for over 6 years and still don’t know a lot 🤣 I recently did a big chop (for me) and am getting used to that short & curly I used to live so much (and love even more now!)

Also finally discovered how to “use” my microfiber hair towel! I feel like I learn something new everyday!

My go to style (when my hair is long enough to braid down) are boho braids (goddess (?)) and I’m absolutely a whole new b*tch with my hair done but am trying to teach myself that I am just as beautiful with my curly hair out

Unfortunately, a while ago - I took out one of my protective styles a little to fast and improperly and I ended up having to cut a big portion of my hair (thus - the big chop)

But lesson learned - won’t rush to take it down again 🤣

Need Advice Looking for holy grail alternative. HELP!!

Post image

Has anyone tried this deep conditioner and found anything else like it? This was my holy grail for years until they went out of business and I haven't found anything I like better. This made my hair feel like butter after rinsing and had great slip. I just want something that makes my hair feel like that again, and so far nothing has (including TGIN's Honey Miracle Hair Mask. It's just ok for me.)

Selfie Summer Color: Don’t buy be scared!!

Post image

My black natural hair lovelies. I know you’re afraid of color because most salons don’t know how to care for our hair, and the thought of losing progress scares us. But I’m here to tell you DONT BE. I have been blonde, orange and pink. My hair is healthy. Thick. And I love the fun colors I’ve gotten to experience. You just gotta find the right stylist. Trust the process. And most importantly, LOVE YOUR CROWN.

Be bold this summer. You’re already beautiful. 🌸

lately i’ve been struggling with feeling attractive with my hair out. it was really fried from dyeing so i did a big chop in october of 2024. i took my most recent braids out in february and i’ve had my hair out since and i’m not gonna lie, it’s been hard getting used to having short hair 😭 i constantly feel like im not feminine enough or that my hair just doesn’t look good with my features. but despite all the struggle, im happy to say that having my hair out like this has really helped me learn and love doing it! i still have a long way to go but i look forward to wash and styling days now! it’s so much fun. yesterday i tried a wash and go with the doux mousse def texture foam (i usually use gel) and i’m not hating my results but i feel like i definitely didn’t get the curl definition i wanted. does anyone have any tips? i applied the mouse on semi-wet hair after washing and stretched everything out a bit with my blow dryer on low heat.

Need Advice I’m struggling with hair moisture!!

Hello! I moved from humid Houston to drier San Francisco and my hair has been struggling for the better part of this year! I wash my hair once a week, wear a bonnet to bed, mister, and have tried using moisturizer but lots of it leave my hair crusty and flaky after a day or lots of buildup. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can bring more moisture into my hair? Like should I buy a humidifier for my hair? My hair feels great after a washday and dry again by day 5. The pattern products were from target was selling them and you could buy custom add ins like curl boost and moisture. My hair was so happy and healthy in Houston but the lack of humidity here is just hurting my hair. Any product or cares advice would be greatly appreciated!! Shea moisture products stopped being great for my hair 3 years ago. Also side note the pictures of my hair are at peak dry hair, to show off my struggle. The last slide is of my hair before I moved.

But I’ve never had no friz wash and go curls. Idk if it’s the product or the method of applying it on dripping wet hair. I love it

So I've played around with different routines and products. I'm trying to keep it simple so I stick with it. Mainly concerned with non-wash days. As of now:

Mizzou- Leave in-with (non-faucet hard water) mixed in spray bottle.

Carols daughter oil spray to lock it in. Every couple of days maybe add carols daughter milk cream with water.

Innersense conditioner after workout days.

Wash day: Bumble to bumble shampoo Innersense conditioner Add innersense mask 2 days a week.

Need Advice For people who have maintained a healthy Afro but never got it to grow

For five months I’ve been consistent with washing my hair weekly/biweekly, and have been doing the LCO method at least 2-3 times a week- on a good week I would do it everyday. I also deep condition and most of the products I use are natural base (since I’m so confused on which chemical products are bad) I used to just air dry, but I’ve been finding a balance with using heat for my hair and air drying, and last but not least I trim to reduce knots in my hair. I will admit, the first few months I overdid it with the trimming and cut more than what I should have, but I just thought it would grow back even longer.

But it hasn’t, and for the past two weeks I’ve lost momentum for looking after my hair after seeing no significant. Even though my curls are more defined and my roots feel healthier, my hair hasn’t grown and that’s what made me want to start caring for my hair.

I’ve seen some women on social media who promote hair health but their hair is still short and they never explain why, so for those whose spent years looking after their hair but its still short, why is that? I want to know because I am happy my hair is healthier, but I just want clarity if it’s a possibility that my hair won’t grow, so I can eventually make peace with it and not give up on my hair journey.

(I haven’t gone to a hair specialist yet because I want to wait until I finish my school assignments, so hopefully I should book an appointment in summer and find out what’s truly going on with my hair)

Need Advice How do I maintain my hair and blow dry properly

Post image

I normally like to have my hair in an Afro blow dried in the first video but recently it’s been harder to get the same length when I blow dry can someone help me give me tips on how to get the results again ( it’s been harder to comb through with the blow dry as well) and also maintain it so it’s still healthy as I want to be able to do this often
