A myth about the Wii to Wii U transition that some people still believe

I'm aware that a lot of you are probably aware of the truth behind this myth, but it is a sentiment that I've heard a fair amount online ever since the Switch 2 reveal, particularly around the people who somehow believe that there is the possibility that the thing could bomb like the Wii U did.

The myth being "How could the Wii U bomb so badly when the Wii was a roaring success". That wasn't the case at all. The Wii was a roaring success during its first two or three years, but by 2010 (possibly 2009) demand for the machine braked to a screeching halt. Nearly everyone who was even remotely interested in games had moved onto Xbox 360 and especially PS3 by this point.

The point being that very few people were actually excited for the Wii U coming out (indeed my classmates at the time didn't even know there was a new Wii out). I'd go as far to declare it the biggest reason as to why the Wii U bombed. Kit mentioned in on his and Krysta's podcast once. If there was hype for the Wii U, the public would've understood the confusion that surrounded it, but there wasn't.

I'm saying this because the Switch 2 has significantly more hype going into it than arguably any Nintendo console has since the N64. The chances of this thing being the new Wii U are next to impossible. Will it do as well as the original? Who's to say.

I'm not saying that the Wii wasn't a great console for core gamers, but it wasn't bought by core gamers, and the Wii U wasn't following up on a grand success. It was following up on a product that the entire world had moved on from, and needed to find a way to get people excited for it again.

Clarifying misinformation about Diddy Kong being erased from Nintendo

FACT: Diddy Kong has not yet been seen in any gameplay footage for either Donkey Kong Bananza or Mario Kart World.

FACT: Donkey Kong 64 and Diddy Kong Racing have not been put onto Nintendo Classics, being among the very few first-party games for Nintendo 64 that are not on the platform yet.

Those are the ONLY two facts.

One rumor, that repeatedly seems to come up, and just won't die... is that Shigeru Miyamoto dislikes the Donkey Kong Country series and wants to remove elements of it, hence the Donkey Kong redesign and the absence of Diddy Kong. This is a FALSEHOOD. Miyamoto never said such a thing.

It is still POSSIBLE that they are trying to erase Diddy Kong, but I find this to be unlikely. There's a lot working against it. Much of this is opinionated speculation and conjecture, though, so I'm not going to leave it here. I'll leave it in the comments.

Switch 1 games will continue to be produced and sold for quite some time.

One thing to keep in mind is that Switch 1 games will continue to be produced and sold for quite some time.

This won't be like the Wii U where Nintendo immediately cut off the supply the second Breath of the Wild launched.

Nintendo has already announced two first party games coming in 2026, Rhythm Heaven Groove and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.

It's not unreasonable to expect more either, as the Switch 2's install base will likely be very low due to the high cost and low availability, while the Switch 1 has a massive install base.

Don't be surprised if they're still making and selling Switch 1 games in 2027 or 2028 even.

For a little bit of perspective, there are still new games being released on PS4, a game system that came out over 11 years ago.

An explanation on the Japanese releases of the Switch 2 - (Japanese only and Multi-language)

Japan is getting two versions of the Nintendo Switch 2 to help combat scalping from overseas visitors and help with the weak yen.

There is a Japanese Only version of the Switch 2 to be released in Japan. It costs ¥49,980 (¥53,980 for the Mario Kart bundle).

The multi-language version costs ¥69,980 (¥73,980 for the Mario Kart bundle).

The Japanese language version is:

  • Limited to Japanese only for games and for the system UI. Some games may have an option to change language in-game, but for anything that requires changing the system language, only Japanese will be supported.
  • Limited to Japanese region accounts. You will not be able to sign in with an account from another region. You will not be able to purchase any games that are not available on the Japanese eShop. Physical games from out of region should work. The Japanese eShop only accepts Japanese credit cards and PayPal accounts.

If you are going to be going on a trip to Japan after the Switch 2 releases, I highly recommend you do not buy this model. You will not be able to purchase any digital games for it whatsoever, and it will be locked to Japanese only. Even though it's significantly cheaper, it will not be worth your money.

I'm tired of all the negativity, who's got some positive things they want to say, share, or just talk about since the Switch 2 reveal?

They say hate darkens the soul but ever sense the switch 2 was revealed a few days ago it feels like there's been nothing an endless stream of hate, misinformation, and plain idiocy, so is there anything positive you wanna share or discuss that you're excited about cause I'm itching to hear it?

Super Smash Brother Movie

Upvotes

Super Smash Brothers movies are about to be a thing and in the same style as Marvel did the Avengers.

Right now i think we're living in the 2008 Iron man MCU beginning era.

Listen.

Both Sonic and Mario have multiversal/alternate dimension travel elements to the movies. They can do this so easily.

So now we have Minecraft Characters in live action, we've got the Sonic characters in VERY established movies... the Mario movie brought in himself, Luigi, DK, Bowser and the rest of the characters from that movie...

We've got a Zelda movie coming so Link and Zelda and others.. Ganondorf (presumably).

Right now all these characters THAT ARE ALSO IN SUPER SMASH BROTHERS are being birthed into live action because I believe at one point in the near future they're gonna start crossing over and we're gonna get a Super Smash Brothers Avengers style movie. All these movies are making waves and have been rated super good. Super Smash Bros is definitely one of Nintendos most important and loved games. They can't NOT do this. It's coming im telling ya and if they don't figure out how to make Super Smash Bros happen in live action they're seriously messing up big time. It's starting to seem like a SSB movie was the plan all along. I think some of us were innocently watching Iron Man and Thor and Captn America not thinking about Avengers being such a big thing at all until it was.

Anyone else been getting this idea??

Hello! I worked QA at Nintendo of America from 2013-2014. It was during the Wii U and 3DS era. Titles I worked on included Smash, Pokemon, Hyrule Warriors, Xenoblade, and more (full list below). What would you like to know from that time?

As the title says, I worked QA at Nintendo of America over a decade ago. We were focused on the Wii U and 3DS. I ended up doing two contracts with them over that time. Since it's been so long, I figured it was safe to talk about it and it might be fun to share some insider stories, although I may decline a few questions if they're too close to the NDA side of things. I'm sure a lot has changed since then, so things I talk about may not be the same anymore, and hopefully for the better.

These are the games I remember testing:

  • Smash Bros for Wii U
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X
  • Hyrule Warriors
  • Yoshi's Wolly World
  • A Wii U system update
  • Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
  • Metroid Prime Federation Force
  • Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer
  • Codename: S.T.E.A.M.

Do you think there could be a Super Mario Odyssey 2 for Nintendo Switch 2?

We'll finally have a new main Mario Kart installment after so many years (since 8 Deluxe is a port and Tour was made for mobile devices), while Donkey Kong returns with a striking 3D platformer. So it wouldn't be unreasonable to think about a sequel to Odyssey, or at least a game of that type, considering that even Galaxy had one

P.S. This is my first post here

From what we have seen so far, do you think that the S2 can run Final Fantasy XVI or VII Rebirth if Square is willing to port them over?

I am skipping the PS5, as those (and Kingdom Hearts IV) are the only games that interest me. However, the S2 seems to be a PS4 pro at most level (running VII Intergrade at 30 fps) or "a middle range PC" (according to Civilization devs), so I am not sure if it will be able to run Rebirth or XVI without some serious downgrade.

It would be a shame to miss those (won't be able to miss KH IV, tho, I will try to play it in some way or another, but considering the lack of news, who knows when it will release), but so far, it doesn't seem likely to have them at S2. Or is it?

The switch 2 is perfectly priced

Upvotes

The switch 2 is reasonablt priced. People forget how much it takes to MAKE a switch 2. With what its offering, and the fact its handheld. Thats already enough to validate the price. Theres also rising prices in general. So OBVIOUSLY its not gonna be the same cost as a wii. And then theres the games. "There gonna be 80$ digital!" They already are. And even if its 90 for a physical copy, tears of the kingdom was and no one complained. Yall are just mad yall cant get jobs and save. Its not hard

Bergsala, the distributor for Nintendo in the Nordics is scalping the Switch 2 by about 100€.

1.0k Upvotes

Bergsala, the Swedish distribution company based in Kungsbacka is seemingly pre-scalping their allocated stock of Switch 2 consoles by roughly 100€ when compared to the prices else where in Europe.

If you are from any of the Nordic countries that fall within the Bergsala distribution area, I would strongly recommend contacting Nintendo of Europe, Bergsala themselves and instead buying the console from another European country.

Bergsala is also the reason why the Nordics have missed out on Club Nintendo and the official Nintendo Stores in the past. Luckily these days, the official Nintendo store does ship to the Nordics, but we still do not have our own site.

Letting Nintendo of Europe know that you as a customer are not satisfied with the way Bergsala is conducting their business and scamming their customers is very important, and the only way to enact change.

https://www.nintendo.com/en-gb/Support/Contact/General-Customer-Service/Contact-Us-1106389.html#/

https://www.bergsala.eu/en/contacts/contact-us

(Your local Nintendo website, that is ran by Bergsala also has a contact form. I would imagine the feedback from there goes straight to Bergsala.)

The amount of misinformation that is out online about the Switch 2 is staggering.

1.6k Upvotes

I completely understand why Nintendo avoided talking about more sensitive topics such as pricing during the Direct, but this has opened the floodgates for massive amounts of misinformation. From the 90 dollar price point to the game-keycard, people are going rampant with completely misguided narratives. The average consumer is dumb as bricks, letting them figure these things out for themselves is a recipe for disaster, and I'm worried if this could cost Nintendo a lot in the long run.

Could we possibly see Super Mario Galaxy 2 come to Nintendo Switch 2? (Super Mario 3D All-Stars)

We’ve seen games like Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Super Mario Party Jamboree get upgrade packs recently. So, what are the chances Super Mario 3D All-Stars could get something similar? With the Switch 2 clearly being in development for a while prior to any recent announcements, I kind of wonder if Super Mario Galaxy 2 was intentionally held back. Like, maybe they’ve been saving it for a future moment—possibly tied to a new limited re-release or online only upgrade pack for the 3D All-Stars collection. Food for thought, maybe it's a solid prediction bet at best.

Hi guys would someone be able to provide me (here or privately) with an email contact for a PR representative of Nintendo Italy? I’d like to reach out to request review codes for my channel. It’s the only video game company I just can’t seem to get in touch with. Thanks so much!

People outside of USA, how are people in your country reacting to Switch 2?

I was on TikTok looking at Switch 2 reaction videos and I noticed some of the videos that I watched, from Latin America countries and China (on RedNote), people are just excited. Most of the comments are like: "Already preordered!" "Can't wait!" I barely see any negative comments, and I suspect that the few that are in the replies are from Americans (though I admit, I cannot be sure)

This post is not made to belittling Americans' reaction. I do think it's too much and I do wish Nintendo will change their mind.

I'm in Thailand. We are posting memes about it, but those that want it (not that many Nintendo fans here) were not deterred.
